Only one of the children from Petrus' second marriage grew to
adulthood: Judocus. When he was 26 years old he married Petronella Theresia Duytschaever,
filia Livinus. She gave him 5 children but twelve years after their wedding she had
already died.
Judocus was one of only a very few of our ancestors mentioned in this work who didn't have to live through a single war. He lived during the quiet Austrian period first under the rule of Emperor CharlesVI and then under Empress Maria Theresa. Unrest didn't come till 1780 when Emperor Joseph II took over the reigns: in November 1784 the Dutch army closed the sea lock near the fortress of Philippine and much of Boekhoute was inundated.
In March 1768 estate reckonings were made: "Staet ende inventaris van baeten ende kommeren bleven ende bevonden ten sterfh. van pieternelle Therese dhuytschaever filia Lieven, overleden alhier ter stede van Bouchoute den ... 1767, wiens ziele godt almachtigh genadigh zij, alwaer houder end bezitter is gebleven den eersaemen Judocus noèe, schaeper van stiele, filius Pieter..."
"Estate reckonings of the property and debts remaining and found in the house of the deceased pieternelle Therese dhuytschaever daughter of Lieven, who died here in the city of Bouchoute on ... 1767, may God the Almighty have mercy on her soul, where the holder and owner remains behind the honorable Judocus noèe, occupation shepherd, son of Pieter..."
They owned 5 sixth of an inn called "St. Huibrecht" situated at the Hogevorst in Bassevelde: they inherited one part from the Duytschaever family, they bought 4 parts in 1762 and the last part was the property of an orphan, the child of Joanna, Petronella's sister who had been married to Lieven Bonamie. To acquire those 4 parts of the inn they had contracted a loan of 25 pounds. A golden cross, a ring and a "silveren ijserken" were sold for 3-5-0 pounds. "silveren" means "made of silver and "ijserken" means a small object made of ... iron. The clothes of the deceased were sold in public auction for 12-4-11 pounds and the sheep were valued at 33-6-8 pounds. The total value of all personal property (excluding the inn) came to 85-5-3 pounds and the estate reckonings closed with a positive balance of 54-3-7 pounds.
On 17/7/1767 Judocus remarried in Boekhoute with Maria Catharina Van Zele. She was the daughter of Maria Cornelia De Vreese and Franciscus Van Zele (who was the son of Petrus Van Zele and Andrea Boelens). After a couple of years in Bassevelde they went to live in Boekhoute.
We here can hardly imagine this but Judocus has seen the death of 12 of his 16 children. Only two sons became adults and only one of them carried on this branch of the Noë family. Did they grieve less in those days? Did they have less time to mourn? One thing is certain: the death of a child was an every day occurrence. Besides, a dead child was a happy child... if it was baptised. In heaven above they take good care of it and it is spared the pain of this earthly vale of tears.
The lack of proper care and hygiene was one of the main reasons for these numerous deaths. First of all the women had to stay alive themselves. Without their menfolk to do the hard labour on the farm? Cattle was a vital source of food and income and therefore very important too. They had to spin and weave, make butter and cheese, perhaps brew beer. They even had to work on the land sometimes. They had to go to market with vegetables, lard, butter, cheese and eggs. For the family and quite often for the smallest children little time was left. Sometimes only a little was left for them.
Their food was monotonous: potatoes with musterd, potatoes with vinegar, sour potatoes, peas with salt or raw beans. No wonder some were underfed and then a usually innocent illness might sweep them away.
On 13/5/1784, ten days after the birth of her youngest son, Maria Catharina died in Boekhoute. Four months later, on 18/9/1784, Judocus remarried in Assenede with Joanna Maria Vincke from the Austriacus polder. But less than a year later, on 9/6/1785 he died.
