ORGANIZATION OF THE
BAPTIST CHURCH AT HOWELL'S, N.Y.
1782

Notes: I have transcribed this photocopy of a magazine article as it appeared in the periodical, "Early Settlers of New York State - Their Ancestors and Descendants."*, pages 167 and 168 [no volume number or edition listed]. These were the only two pages photocopied which were left with the Town of Mount Hope Historian. Spelling and punctuation as printed. Abbreviations: "d" = dismissed, and "D" = death. JSF

"And being willing that all should know our Sentiments with regard to the great doctrines of religion, and supposing it necessary for the purposes of Christian fellowship that we should be agreed among ourselves in these points which we judge to be essential to true Christianity, we unitedly adopt:

We believe that at the consummation of all things, the Lord Jesus Christ will descend from heaven with power and great glory, that there will be an universal ressurection of the dead, - that all the human race must be judged according to the deeds done in the body, wether [sic] good or evil.

- and do now by the help of God, and according to the light which he has given us - Solemnly enter into Covenant with God, and with each other subscribing it with our own hands the third day of July, one thousand seven hundred and eighty-two."

During the meetings of the organization in the absence of a minister, the schoolmaster was the leader and gave out the psalms. "Twas better meant than acted by this young scholar in Christ's school."

The Old School Baptist records date from 1785. The current occupants of the church have photocopied all of the original books and papers, dating from 1783. "Originals have been stored at the Bloomingburg NY Historical Society,Town of Mamakating, Sullivan County, New York." [Note: 7/02/2002 - Additionally, these records may be available at the Orange Co. Genealogy Society, Goshen, NY, as 'the records of the Baptist Church at Howells, NY'. JF] The church is now the Howells United Church of Christ. You can read the history of the church, and see a pictures at Howells United Church of Christ at New Vernon.

* Free lookups are available regarding: "Early Settlers of New York State - Their Ancestors and Descendants, Volumes I and II. These books are comprised of articles that originally appeared in the periodical Early Settlers of New York State - Their Ancestors and Descendants. Edited by New York genealogist Janet Foley, its purpose was to collect, publish, and preserve church records, tombstone inscriptions, and family records, first from western New York, then from all of New York State. Referencing over 97,000 people who lived between 1760 and 1942, this collection provides little-known but first-rate source material that is essential to any researcher whose family research involves early New York State."
