CALLED TO HER REWARD
Mrs. Maggie Beatty Willis Ends a Life of
Earnest Christian Work.
The death of Mrs. Maggie BEATTY WILLIS, wife
of O.P. WILLIS of this city, who passed away to her eternal rest at an early
hour yesterday morning, was a beautiful ending to a beautiful Christian life.
With perfect faith in the promises of her Savior and a clear knowledge that the
shadow of the death angel’s wing was creeping over her, she calmly bade family
farewell, sank into sleep, her only regret being that she had left behind her
work that she had hoped to finish.
For many years Mrs. Willis had been the
leading spirit in temperance work in this city, and held the position of County President of the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union. She was one of the organizers of the
Children’s Day Home, an institution in which she was always deeply interested,
and there are many young girls in this locality to-day who owe their present
happiness and good position in life to the aid of the kindly guiding hand of
this lovely Christian woman.
In speaking of her life work a few days
since, Mrs. Willis said: “My only regret is that I must leave it unfinished,
but I realize that the good work will continue, and the seed sown will become
ripened grain. I was but a grain of sand in the glorious realm of high
endeavor, and after I am gone someone will take up my share of the work and
carry it on to a successful ending.”
Mrs. Willis was born in Kentucky, her family being
prominent in the Blue Grass State. Mrs. Willis was a daughter of the late
Judge H.O. BEATTY and sister of the present Chief Justice W.H. BEATTY of the
Supreme Court. She was the mother of Mrs.. Edward TADE of San Francisco, Mrs. E.M. LYNN and Misses Alice, Kate and Emiline WILLIS of Sacramento.
The funeral services will be held at her late
residence, 1630 G street, at 4 o’clock this afternoon, and the remains will be
taken to San Francisco for cremation.

The funeral of Effie M. RUSSELL, only
daughter of Joseph and Lydia Russell, took place to-day, and was attended
by a very large concourse of friends.
The deceased was 17 years old, and was
popular with all who knew her. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. R.
MESSENGER, and interment was in the Elk Grove Cemetery. The deceased, besides her father and
mother, leaves four brothers, Gilbert R., Chester J., Frank C., and Forest S. RUSSELL.
The pallbearers were Miss Alice BAILEY, Miss
Elsie WILTON, Miss Birdie MITCHELL, Miss Blanch HOPPER and Miss Julia WARDROBE.

Mrs. Will MARTIN, J.T. and Al. BROWN, a native of Germany, aged 42 years and 3
months.

William Emmette Coleman, uncle of J.D.B. GROOMS, Adelaide DUVAL and Mrs. J.R. MERRILL of Sacramento, and Mrs. M.E. MYERS of San Francisco, a native of Virginia.

Antone Machada, beloved husband of Mary Amelia Fagunes, father of Antone and
Mayme E. Fagunes, a native of Azores, Sao Jorge, Portugal, aged 53 years.

residence near Freeport, thence to St. Joseph Church, Freeport, where requiem
high mass will be celebrated for the repose of his soul, commencing at 10
o’clock.
