4Families In Brief

The BURBIDGE family immigrated in 1854 from Bedfordshire, England. They were converts of the LDS Church and settled in Salt Lake City, Utah. Other direct line families included are Stoney, Parry, Humphreys, & Brown. The Stoney family intermarried with two older US families--Gass and Button. The Gass family arrived in Utah from the Pennsylvania frontier; they moved along many of the same trails as did the Jacksons. The Button family traces their lineage back to a Matthias Button who arrived in the Massachusetts Bay Colony in the 1600's. Whether this is a direct lineage is just one of a million questions remaining to be answered. The Button family shared common places and times with the Cummings in colonial New England.

The CUMMINGS family trace their ancestry to the New England colonists. Our branch settled in Oxford County, Maine in  the 1800's. They intermarried with the Silver, Cross, and York families. These families share many early common ancestors with the Pratt and Elmer and Hoyt families of the Jackson line. This is probably due in part to many of the early members of the LDS Church with New England ancestry.

The JACKSON family first appear in the records in western Pennsylvania in the 1790's.  They began moving west and didn't stop until they reached the California coast. There are families of this branch in Monroe & Knox County, Ohio. Many moved into Indiana, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, Utah, Arizona and California. The Meeks, Pratt, & Elmer lines are direct lineage marriages; these families  have resided in southern Utah since the 1850's.

The SOROFMAN family entered the US in the early 1900's as Jewish immigrants from Russia. They settled in Boston and Maine. This branch also includes the Klein & Goldsman families. When my husband's Grandfather moved to Rumford, Maine, he married Ida Klein. They moved to Oregon for a short while but returned in time for the Sorofman family to marry into the Cummings family and connect with a long line of New England ancestral history.
