Located in theProvince of Leinster, in the Southeast corner of Ireland, containing the towns of Wexford, Enniscorthy, New Ross and Gorey.

The county has always been known for its prosperous farmland. Most likely, this is the reason it was less affected by the Famine of 1845-47, than many other counties. In 1841 the population was 202,000-in 1851 it had fallen to 180,000. By 1891 the census counts approxiamtely 112,00. Currently the census is about 100,000.

The county is mostly in the diocese of Ferns. This information is required to research Marriage Licenses and certain types of Wills...In 1836, this Diocese had 28 parishes and in 1931 there were 41.

'Poor Law Unions' were named after a local large town. The same districts later became used as 'General Registrar's Districts'. The latter are the areas within births, deaths and marriages were collected.

My particular area of interest is Little Cullenstown (as there are 2 Cullenstowns in the County) in the barony of Shelmaliere West, Civil Parish of Horetown and PLU of New Ross. It is a mere 545 acres, unsigned region, north east of Folksmills. It is home to a holy well as well as the ruins of a humble abode, leased to Judith Ryan in Griffith's Valuation of 1853, and through the Cancelled Books, traced to its last owners, in 1954.
