THE ROUTH FAMILY OF RANDOLPH COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA
Lawrence W. Routh speculated that it was probable that some members of the family
of Jacob Routh (of Sandy Creek) followed the migration of "hundreds of citizens
of the Piedmont section of North Carolina" across the mountains into present day
Tennessee, and that accounted for the lack of information on some of these
descendants. In order to identify possible individuals from the family of Jacob
Routh of Sandy Creek who may have joined our Jacob Routh (1745) in that
migration, we have tried to put together the first few generations of that
family. Unfortunately we only copied the first part of Lawrence W. Routh's book
THE ROUTHS OF RANDOLPH COUNTY, N.C. We were interested in finding records of our
Jacob Routh who left Randolph County shortly after 1790. The research files of
Lawrence W. Routh seemed to yield much more information as he concentrated in his
book on later generations and had amassed a great deal of information on the
later Routh descendants of Aaron, Joshua and possibly Jacob Routh Jr. and allied
families.
FIRST ROUTH GENERATION IN RANDOLPH COUNTY
JACOB ROUTH of Sandy Creek He was Said by Lawrence W. Routh to be a probable son
of Zacchariah or Zaccheus Routh who had been on the 1759 Rowan County Tax list
with Jeremiah Routh and susequently was cited at an Orange County Court in 1763.
This seemed to be Zaccheus (1717) son of Lawrence and Mehitable [____] Routh.
Lawrence W. Routh thought this Jacob Routh was born about 1755. He was over age
45 in the Randolph County Census in 1800. If he is the Jacob Routh witness on
the John Sanders' Will in 1751, he is considerably older than Lawrence W. Routh
suspected. He may have been married before arriving in Randolph County. He
married 1. about 1778 MARY or POLLY or MOLLIE YORK daughter of Henry and Elinor
[____] York. Henry York's brother was Seymore York to whom the Earl of Granville
gave a 640 acre land grant in 1756. The land was located in the North East part
of what became Randolph County,NC on Sandy Creek. Jacob married in his later
years 2. Randolph County, NC on March 29, 1824 SARAH ALLRED or ALDRIDGE daughter
of John and Margaret [Cheney] Allred. It is not certain just where Jacob was
living before 1788, but on June 20, 1788, Jacob Routh purchased 120 acres of
land on Sandy Creek that had originally been part of the York Grant. As follows-
JACOB ROUTH purchased from William and Charity Fields for £50 "hard money", 120
acres of land "on Sandy Creek, Randolph County, NC granted to Semor York from the
Earl of Granville on August 1, 1758 to William Ingelson Jan. 20, 1759, to Semor
York 1774, also all rights of said Silvana York and Semor York to William Field"
Witnessed by John York and John Chambers. From Randolph County, NC Land Deed
Abstracts, Books 1-5, 1779-1794 by Barbara Newsome Grigg. Copied at Randolph
County Library, Ashboro, NC On the General Index to Real Estate Conveyances,
Randolph County this was listed as being in Book 3, page 315. In this same year
Jacob purchased an additional 108 Acres from Shubal York, witnessed by Aaron
York (Uncle of Mollie)and Edmond York (Brother of Mollie) in Book 3, page 327.
Shubal York was son of Seymore York and a first cousin of Mollie [York] Routh,
and evidently lived near them according to tax records. Between the years 1800
and 1824 Jacob Routh accumulated a great deal of land from the following
individuals: James Crabtree, John Routh, John Walker, William Welborn, Daniel
Clark, Jonathan Bain, William York (Mollie's brother who went to TN) David Fox et
al. Lawrence said the land was all in the Sandy Creek area. Here Jacob Routh
and his family lived among members of the York family, relatives of his wife, for
the rest of his life. Lawrence believed he died at Sandy Creek about 1830. Jacob
Routh appeared in the 1799 Tax list of Randolph County along with Henery Routh
and Jeremiah Routh. Jacob owned 228 acres of land by this date. By the 1803 Tax
List Jacob Routh owned 472 acres of land and now was cited with Henery Routh,
Jerimiah Routh and Isaac Routh. It appears that a son named Isaac had come of
age between 1799 and 1803. CHILDREN: Jacob and Polly [York] Routh as found in
Lawrence W. Routh's book "The Routh's of Randolph County" and according to the
text was based largely on the 1790 Census record which indicated 6 males under
16. This family however only accounts for five sons in 1790. 1. JEREMIAH ROUTH
born about 1780, no further information 2. AARON ROUTH born 1783, 3. MARY ROUTH
born 1784, married Oct. 23, 1807 JOHN HALL, no further information 4. MALE ROUTH
born about 1785 no further information 5. JOSHUA ROUTH born 1788 6. MALE ROUTH
born about 1789 no further information 7. MALE ROUTH born about 1791 no further
information 8. JACOB ROUTH JR. born 1795
If the sons of Jacob Routh are listed chronologically in the 1799 and 1803 Tax
lists, then the approximate ages given by Lawrence W. Routh need to be
reevaluated. Henry was probably the eldest son, followed by Jeremiah and then
Isaac.
Based upon information that Lawrence Routh gathered after the publication of his
book sometime in the late 1970's or early 1980's (face plate had no date) and
particularly because of the 1799 and 1803 Tax Lists I would give these children a
different birth year estimate and birth order as follows- + 1.HENRY ROUTH
(named after his maternal grandfather)born about 1779, married Apr. 5, 1837
ELEANOR ALLRED "Nelly". Henry was not yet identified when the book THE ROUTHS OF
RANDOLPH COUNTY, NC was published. Henry does not appear on the L&P Index at any
time. 2. JEREMIAH ROUTH born about 1780, Listed on 1799 and 1803 Tax Lists.
Jacob Routh deeded 64 acres of land to Jeremiah in 1806, Book 11, page 101,
according to the Randolph County L&P Index. That is the last record found for
Jeremiah in Randolph County, he may have gone to East Tennessee. 3. ISAAC ROUTH
born 1778-1782 After 1803 he disappeared from the records + 4. AARON ROUTH
bout 1783, died 1866, married 1. MARY ROACH born VA 1790, died about 1855,
married 2.in 1864 LUCINDA UNDERWOOD. 5. MARY ROUTH born about 1785, married Oct.
23, 1807 JOHN HALL No further information + 6. JOSHUA born about 1788, died
1872, married 1. ELIZABETH TURNER "Betsy", married 2. DELILA FOSTER 7. MALE born
about 1789, 8. MALE born about 1790, 9. JACOB ROUTH Jr. born 1795.
The 1800 Census shows Jacob's household with 1 male under 10 (Jacob Jr), 3 males
10-16 (Aaron, Joshua and unknown male), 3 males 16-26 (Henry, Jeremiah and Isaac)
and 1 male over 45 (Jacob) 1 female 10-16 (Mary) and 1 female 26-45(Mollie York)
ISAAC ROUTH born by 1778-1782 was placed with this family for the following
reasons- 1. On the alphabetized 1799 Tax List of Randolph County there are three
Rouths in a sequential group. The Rouths were alphabetized by their last name
only and appeared- Jacob Routh listed with 228 acres of land followed by Henery
Routh and Jerimiah Routh neither of whom owned any land. This looks like Jacob
Routh of Sandy Creek with two taxable age sons, all on the home farm. This is
assuming "Taxable age" at 21, it may be less. 2. In the 1803 Tax List for
Randolph County, NC there are now four Rouths in the sequence- Jacob Routh with
472 acres of land followed by Henery Routh, Jerimiah Routh and Isaac Routh. The
last three named have no land and are listed as 1 white poll each. This list is
NOT alphabetized at all and looks like Jacob Routh now with three taxable age
sons, all working the home farm. 3. If Isaac is one of the unidentified males
above he along with Henry would seem to have been born before 1782 to be on the
tax list. The addition of another son would be consistent with the 1790 Census
record which shows 6 males under age 16. Isaac does not show up on the Randolph
County Land and Property Index, nor is he listed in Randolph County Marriage
Records. He does not show up on either the 1800 or the 1810 Census Records of
Randolph County. So he came of age after 1799 and before 1803 or born 1778-1782.
The mystery of the two remaining unidentified males in Jacob's family might be
solved by the appearance of two unidentified Routh males in the marriage records
of Randolph County, NC. There were only two individuals that Lawrence W. Routh
had not identified by notation on the copy of the Randolph County Marriage
records in his Collection. They were ANDERSON ROUTH and MOSES ROUTH, and both men
were connected in some way to Jacob's family.
ANDERSON ROUTH was the bondsman, when Henry Routh was married in 1837. So
Anderson was at least 18 or 21 at that time or born before 1816. He has not been
found in other records of the Randolph County, NC area at a later date. There is
a record of an Anderson Routh marriage to Mahala Rumley Mar. 10, 1842 along with
a Jacob Routh marriage to Margaret Rumley Sept. 19, 1833 both in Harrison County,
IN. According to both THE FAMILY OF JOSEPH ROUTH by Tom Turpin and also Ross
Routh's THE ROUTH FAMILY REVISITED these men, as well as the others named Routh
in the Harrison County, IN marriage records are children of James and Rebecca
[Gower] Routh. Both Anderson and Jacob said to have been born in Knox County,
TN. The name Anderson is not that common a name and for that reason the
similarity of names is of interest ANDERSON ROUTH married Randolph County, NC
Dec. 10, 1840 JEMIMA CAVANESS, Anthony Hays was the bondsman (Edmond Hays who was
married to Mollie [York] Routh's first cousin, Martha York, was the bondsman on
three Sandy Creek Routh marriages, a Lewis Hays was bondsman on one other.) The
witness to both Anderson and Moses' marriage was Jno. B. Troy, who was probably
a clerk issuing the Licenses. He was witness on at least six marriages in Jacob
Routh's family. Aaron Routh's probate papers indicate a William Chamness was paid
for making a coffin for Aaron. Is this the same name as Cavaness?
MOSES ROUTH married Dec. 17, 1843 ELIZABETH RIGHTSELL, Laban M. Fox bondsman (A
Rightsell or Wrightsell family lived near the Rouths on Sandy Creek) In William
Riley Routh's probate records 1866, a piece of land was sold to pay his debts and
that land was described as being on Sandy Creek adjoining land of John
Wrightsell. The following Land transactions listed in the Randolph County L&P
Index for Moses indicate that John Wrightsell was frequently part of his land
transactions.
Aaron Routh Deeded 148 acres of land to MOSES ROUTH in 1848 (Deed Book 28, page
42) MOSES ROUTH sold 113 acres of land to John Wrightsell in 1853 (Deed Book 29,
page 147). MOSES ROUTH and Elizabeth Routh et al deeded to John Wrightsell
property (with no description in the index) in 1873 (DeedBook 37, page 516) and
this was in the midst of a series of Land transactions between 1872-1874 all
dealing with the estate of Joshua Routh and by known heirs of Joshua Routh decd.
Not sure why Moses would be included in any distribution of Joshua's estate. The
heirs of Joshua were listed and Moses name was not included. Why would Moses
have rights in this land? Who was included in the "et al"? MOSES ROUTH and
Elizabeth Routh gave a Mortgage deed to Henry Y. Kivett in 1879 (The York family
intermarried with the Kivett family) on 148 acres of land. (Deed Book 43, page
23). This was possibly the same 148 acres he originally received from Aaron
Routh. MOSES ROUTH and Elizabeth deeded 26 acres of land to Minus Ward in 1880
(Deed Book 47, page 262) We did not copy the Index beyond this date. Note that
Jacob Routh of Sandy Creek obtained 300 acres of land in 1824 from David Fox et
al (Deed Book 16, page 113) and this sounds like it could be an estate sale. So
Jacob Routh had dealings with the Fox family. Was Laban Fox, who was bondsman at
Moses' marriage part of that family? Moses stayed in Randolph County, lived in
the Sandy Creek area and certainly seems to be part of this Routh family. See
Timeline 1700 for an earlier man named Moses Routh "of Maryland" whose
descendants are found in Guilford County, NC.
There are two other men named Routh who may be important to our research, they
are JAMES ROUTH and JOHN ROUTH.
JAMES RUTH born before 1755 and lived in the northern part of the County near
Jacob of Sandy Creek. The first record found for James is in Randolph County's
first tax list in 1779. In this Tax list taken during the Revolutionary War,
James was assessed threefold because while he submitted an inventory for his
taxes, he refused to take an Oath of Allegiance. Since the collection of taxes
was still being carried out by the representatives of the Proprietors who were in
turn representatives of the Crown, it raises the question of just which side was
the allegiance to? James owned at that date 50 acres of land , 3 cows and a
horse. By the 1785 Randolph County Tax list he owned 160 acres of land, but
there is no record of any land purchase in the L&P Index to this date. In the
year 1788 he signed a petition to prevent the relocation of the Randolph County
Court. The signers of this petition were all from the northern part of the
County where the Court was then located, and James' name appears directly next to
that of Jacob Routh of Sandy Creek and Edmond York who was Jacob's
brother-in-law. In the 1790 Census 1 male over 16 1 male under 16 4
females On page 288 with Jacob Routh of Sandy Creek This census was in a series
of alphabetized lists. In the 1800 Census 1 male under 10
1 male 16-26 1 male over 45 3 females under 10 1
female 10-16 1 female 16-26 1 female over 45 James was over 45 and thus born
before 1755 which makes him a likely candidate to be a brother of Jacob Routh of
Sandy Creek. He did not appear in the 1810 Census and would have been hard to
miss as this is an alphabetized list. James received some sort of unspecified
property in 1812 and the Grantor was listed as "Jacob Hale (Saml Atty)" which is
not very clear (Deed Book 12, page 203). In the only other entry for James in the
Index, James Routh conveyed 128 acres of land to James Cox in 1815 (Deed Book
13, page 406) and without reading the Deeds themselves it is not certain that
James was still a resident of Randolph County at either date. The names of his
wife and children are not known. James did not move to Tennessee with Jacob and
Joseph Routh, but he may have followed them or simply settled in some other area.
He also may have stayed in Randolph County and died there. He too may have been
the father of Anderson and Moses Routh. James disappeared from Randolph County
Records.
JOHN ROUTH There are even fewer records for John. He always seemed to be located
near our Jacob Routh (1745), Joseph Routh, and Isaac Redfern and was in the group
that lived in the southern part of the County. The first record found for John
is in Randolph County's Tax list of 1785 and he is in a different district than
Jacob of Sandy Creek and James Routh. John is with Joseph Routh and Joseph Moon
and this is the list that "Our Jacob" does not appear in at all. But that same
year, 1785, Isaac Redfarn, Joseph Routh, Jacob Routh (1745) and Edward Routh all
sign a petition to try and get the Court of Randolph County moved closer to the
center of the County from its location in the north east portion of the County,
but John for some reason did not sign this petition. In the 1790 Census John is
still near Joseph Moon, Joseph Routh, Jacob Routh (Jr) and Isaac Redfern in the
southern part of Randolph County and listed- 1 male over 16 2 males under 16
2 females In 1800 John receives 43 acres of land from William and Martha
Bell (Deed Book 8, page 153) and within the year he conveyed 43 acres of land to
Jacob Routh (Deed Book 8, page 195). Without reading the actual deed it is not
certain whether John was still a resident of Randolph County at the date of the
transactions. John is not in the 1800 Census or in the 1810 Census and the only
clue to his age may be the fact that he did NOT appear in the 1779 Tax List of
Randolph County. Either he was not yet of age or he was not yet in the County.
John Routh also disappeared from Randolph County, NC records.
SECOND ROUTH GENERATION IN RANDOLPH COUNTY
HENRY ROUTH Son of Jacob and Mollie [York] Routh born about 1785, died 1852,
married Randolph County, NC Apr. 5, 1837 ELEANOR ALLRED "Nelly" and ANDERSON
ROUTH was the bondsman. His probate papers indicate he left a will, but no part
of it was included in "Randolph County Estates" listed RCGSJ XV #2, Spring 1991,
and heirs were not listed. David McMasters was Executor on his estate and his
Inventory was taken in Feb. 1852. They are known to have children as a grandson
name Isaac Routh operated a grist mill and sawmill near Gray's Chapel Church. And
had sons Daniel "Bud", John, and Wesley.
AARON ROUTH Son of Jacob and Mollie [York] Routh born 1783, Inventory taken Nov.
5, 1866 "Randolph County Estates" listed RCGSJ XV #2, Spring 1991 James O'Dell
was executor on his estate, he left a will which was not printed in the article ,
married 1.Randolph County, NC Oct. 23, 1807 MARY ROACH and the bondsman was
Aaron's uncle, Edmond York. Mary was born VA 1790, died about 1855, married 2.
Randolph County, NC Jan. 31, 1864 LUCINDA UNDERWOOD who survived him. The
bondsman at the second marriage was John R. Swafford. He lived between Gray'S
Chapel Church and Millboro and according to Lawrence W. Routh. CHILDREN: Aaron
and Mary [Roach] Routh 1. SARAH or SOPHIA ROUTH born 1805, married PINCTNEY
DAVENPORT and had 9 children 2. DELILAH ROUTH born 1811, died June 14, 1875,
buried Sandy Creek Baptist Church, married Randolph County, NC Feb. 7, 1829 ABRAM
YORK (second cousins once removed) son of John and Martha [White] York born Nov.
14, 1808, died Jan. 30, 1892, buried Sandy Creek Baptist Church. Had eight
children. 3. LUCY ROUTH born 1814 4. JOHN ROUTH born 1819, died 1864, married 1.
Randolph County, NC Oct. 16, 1839 NANCY HAYS with Oliver Cox bondsman, married
2. Randolph County, NC Dec. 29, 1855 MARTITIA J. STOUT and John Underwood was the
bondsman. L.W.R. says he lived near his father and had a son named Samuel Routh
who lived near the village of Julian. Samuel had a son John Wesley (1878-1960).
5. JEMIMA ROUTH born 1825 6. SYTHIA ROUTH born 1829
JOSHUA ROUTH Son of Jacob and Mollie [York] Routh, born 1788, died June 22, 1873,
married 1. Randolph County, NC Apr. 7, 1810 ELIZABETH "Betsy" TURNER and Edmond
Hays was bondsman, married 2. DELILA FOSTER. He was a founding member of the
Gray's Chapel Methodist Church and most of his decedents attended the church.
He had probate records- left, a will written in 1872 which was not quoted but a
petition for dower rights by second wife listed the names of his heirs. CHILDREN:
Joshua and Betsy [Turner] Routh + 1. ZACHARIAH ROUTH born 1812, died 1884,
married AGNES SPOON + 2. ISAAC ROUTH born 1814, married LILLY ANN CUDE +
3. ALFRED ROUTH born 1816, died 1897, married Aug. 16, 1838 POLLY GRAY and
Zeno W. Cox was bondsman + 4. LORENZO ROUTH born about 1818, married ALEY
HAYES 5. WILLIAM RILEY ROUTH born about 1820, died 1865, married Randolph County,
NC Dec. 26, 1862 EMILY FOUST with Lewis Hays bondsman., Killed during the Civil
War. No children. His estate in 1866 listed besides his widow his siblings as
heirs. 6. JESSE ROUTH born about 1822, Killed during the Civil War before May 6,
1862 when an Administrator's bond was issued to Reuben Smith and witnessed by
Alfred Routh and David McMasters. A notation on his inventory states that Were it
not for creditors the possessions of Isaac would legally belong to his father,
Joshua Routh. Jesse never married. The creditors made it necessary to sell his
land to pay his debts. That land interestingly enough was described as "175
acres on Brush Creek" Jesse was not shown in the L&P Index as buying or receiving
any land in Randolph County- ever. How did he come to own this land? Is this
land once owned by Jacob Routh of B. Creek, the man Lawrence called Jacob Routh
Senior? And was Jacob of B. Creek really his grandfather, Jacob of Sandy Creek?
7. POLLY ROUTH married WILLIAM P. ALLRED and heirs listed in her father's 1872
probate records were by initials- W.A; S.C.; B.F.; and Martha E. In 1873 B.F.;
Franklin, and Alsey Allred were listed as minors. Martha J. and B. F. seemed to
be children of S.C. decd by 1866.
8. REBECCA ROUTH died before 1866 when husband Willis represented minor son
Thomas J. Steele who was one of the heirs of William Riley Routh, married WILLIS
STEELE and had a sons Wm Thos and Thomas J. Steele 9. CYNTHIA ROUTH 10.DELANIA
ROUTH She was listed in father's probate 1872 records as "Winny" and Winny D.
Routh, and signed one document "Winna Delena"
THIRD ROUTH GENERATION IN RANDOLPH COUNTY
ZACHARIAH ROUTH Son of Joshua and Betsy [Turner] Routh born 1812, died 1884,
married Randolph County, NC Mar. 30, 1837 AGNES SPOON daughter of John and Sophia
[____] Spoon. They had a houseful of children of their own but took in the four
children of Zachariah's brother Isaac after he left town. Zachariah applied for
and received an Administrator's Bond on Nov. 6, 1849 and a and a Guardian's Bond
for minor heirs on May 7, 1850. CHILDREN: Zachariah and Agnes [Spoon] Routh 1.
JOSEPH ALSON ROUTH born 1838, died 1910, married Randolph County, NC Apr. 30,
1865 P. JANE PUGH and P. R. Pugh was bondsman. They had daughter Zula who
married Seward Nelson. 2. JOSHUA MARION ROUTH born 1840, died 1898 and Inventory
taken July 15, 1898, married Randolph County, NC Oct. 27, 1866 HANNAH SARAH
JULIAN "Sallie" and William M. Routh was bondsman. They ha children: Orien P.
1867-1939; J. Page 1871; Balfour Z. 1873; William Vernace 1875; Velia who married
____ York; and Culberson C. born 1883. In L&P Index they sold land in 1874 to
Isaac F. Julian and to Lorenzo W. Julien 3. JOHN M. ROUTH born 1840, died 1849 4.
WILLIAM MANLEY ROUTH born Jan. 14, 1843, died 1914, married 1. Randolph County,
NC Mar. 23,(or 25) 1866 MARTHA JANE ALLRED daughter of Jonathan and Nancy [Allen]
Allred who died 1901. They had children: Virginia or Jenny who married Alvis
Underwood; Zorada who married Eli Cicero Hamilton; Endora who married ____ Cates
and Cicero Fordella Routh who married Sarah Ellen Strickland He married 2. SARAH
____. William Manley enlisted June 1861 in Company M of the 22nd Regiment North
Carolina Troops called "Randolph Hornets" and served nearly four years in the
Army of Northern Virginia. 5. ALEXANDER ROUTH born 1845, died 1846 6. ALEXANDER
NEESE ROUTH born 1848, died 1927, married MARTITIA JULIAN and had children J. F.;
Cora married ____Walker; Balfour; Agnes married ____Pugh, Causey, Monroe, Esther
married ____White and Walter Routh. 7. SOPHIA ANN ROUTH born 1855, died 1895
married S. F. SMITH 8. CICERO ROUTH born 1855, died 1864 9. P. AUGBURN ROUTH born
1856, died 1930, married MINNIE TROGDON and had children: Wister; Walter; Roy;
Ila and Alvis 10.E. LAFAYETT born 1858, died 1902, married LEE McMASTERS and had
children Ernest; Erastus; Clyde; Cicero; Clarence; Ollie; Verlie; Eula and Else
11.MARY ROUTH born 1861, died 1866 12.THOMAS ROUTH born 1864, died 1866
ISAAC ROUTH Son of Joshua and Betsy [Turner] Routh born 1814, married LILLY ANN
CUDE (one source says daughter of Timothy) but Internet files indicate that she
was the daughter of James Cude and grandaughter of Timothy. In her 1845 letter
Lilly said her mother was Lann Giles, but Internet says Mary Findley. The family
of James and Mary [Findley] probably correct as they had a daughter Sylvania Cude
born 1808 and it was to Sylvania that Lilly wrote the letter. This was not a
marriage made in heaven. Lilly found other men more attractive than her husband,
Isaac. She ran off and Isaac asked his brother Zachariah to care for and rear
his children. Isaac too left the area, he obtained a divorce and joined the Army
for the Mexican War,(1846-1848) he received a discharge after that war but he
never returned to Randolph County, and was never heard from again. The NCGSJ
(North Carolina Genealogical Society Journal, May 1985 ) Vol. XI no. 2, page 104
has a letter written by Lilly on Feb. 23, 1845 to Clemmons and Silvana Allred
whom she calls brother and sister, and her family back in Randolph County. In
this letter she says she has taken her mother's name and is now known as Miss
Lann Giles and she is living with an elderly lady in Chesterfield County, VA .
She says she never expects to return or to see her children again, and
specifically mentions youngest child, daughter Silvana. She expresses great love
for one Zimore Harding and an abiding friendship for one Emberson Simelery
(Emerson Lineberry). She expresses no fondness at all for the Ruths and says
they beat her, but she fails to mention that she twice attempted to murder her
husband, Isaac Routh. Once with poison and again by stabbing him. When she ran
away it was with one of her lovers.
CHILDREN: Isaac and Lilly [Cude] Routh Listed in order found on Guardian Bond for
Minor children in 1850 (usually listed in chronological order), and no longer
minors when listed in their uncle Jesse Routh's probate records in 1862. The
usual definition of Minor is an individual under the age of 18. Assuming that,
the four children below were born before after 1832 and before about 1844 when
their mother deserted the family. The birth dates below are all estimates. 1.

Dec. 28, 1835, died there Sept. 12, or 27, 1900. William served in the
Confederate States Army during the Civil War. He was a potter and a farmer.
Both he and Rebecca were buried at Gray's Chapel Methodist Church Cemetery. In
1873 he gave a Mortgage deed for 103acres of land to Samuel Nelson et al (Deed
Book 38, page 227). They had Children all born Randolph County, NC Eldora; Mary
E. born Dec. 29, 1858, died Nov. 5, 1882; Clark, William Vansickle born 1862;
Katie born abt. 1864, James C. born 1870 and Jannie Bell Routh born Oct. 21,
1872, died Sept 7, 1907. William and all of his children lived their entire lives
in Randolph County. 3. JAMES M. ROUTH born about 1837. Signed Petition in William
Riley Routh's probate records in 1866. In 1873 probate records of Joshua Routh
he was "living in Indiana". 4. SYLVANIA ROUTH "Vanie" born about 1840, married

While Lawrence W. Routh had extensive files on York, Allred and other allied
families that were part of the Lawrence Routh Collection at the Randolph County
Library, the constraints of time limited our research to the Routh and Redfern
families. The construction of this York family is with information found on the
Internet There are numerous discrepancies in these York files and we have made no
effort to assess the accuracy of the research. I am hoping to establish that
relatives of Jacob Routh of Sandy Creek who were part of the migration from
Randolph County, NC to East Tennessee in the 1790's, and if possible to identify
those individuals here and in Tennessee.

COCKRUM and their children born between 1803 and 1826 were all born in Grainger

CHESTER COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA DELAWARE COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA
CHESTER COUNTY was one of the original Counties in Pennsylvania established in
1682. It was originally called Upland County. The name of the County, and the
Township of the same name, was changed with the arrival of William Penn, who with
encouragement of some of his followers renamed it Chester, for the town of that
name in England.
DELAWARE COUNTY was established in 1789 from the eastern most portion of Chester
County. It is bounded on the south by the state of Delaware south east by the
Delaware River, East on the City of Philadelphia and on the West by Chester
County. It contains what was known in the earliest days of Chester County as "The
Welsh Tract".
THE WELSH TRACT was envisioned as a "Barony" in a promise made to the Quaker
residents of North and SouthWales when William Penn was recruiting Quaker
settlers to come to America. William Penn issued a warrant from the Proprietors
for forty thousand acres of land to be laid out in one continuous tract on 13th
1st mo. 1684. The tract would constitute a single municipal entity, without
intrusion from unwanted persons. As with the Congregationalist Puritans in New
England, when they spoke of Religious freedom, they really meant a strict
adherence to their own beliefs and customs. The Townships of Radnor, Haverford
and Merion bordering on the City of Philadelphia were inhabited entirely by
Quakers and governed by Quakers. And most of those people were Welsh. It was
said that for many years the language of choice was the Welsh language and that
Welsh Quakers were unable to understand William Penn when he came to preach at
the Haverford meeting about 1700. The Quaker population spread to Townships of
Darby, Ridley and all the rest of the Townships. The Welsh Township of Merion
was cut off from their tract and became part of Philadelphia. By 1691 the Welsh
population in the remaining Townships of Haverford and Radnor had agreed to being
annexed by Chester County and to pay Tax or Rate to support the needs of their
Community. They agreed to support the Government but not the Military. A later
migration of Welsh Quakers was located across the Skuykill River at the Gwynedd
Meeting. The Adamson family were at Haddonfield, NJ and moved about 1726 to,
Springfield, Bucks County, PA and were for a time members of the Gwynedd MM.
Many of the names of the Allied families in the ROUTH and ADAMSON genealogy were
residents of Chester County, PA. There was a large migration of these people in
1733 when they moved to Frederick County, VA. The land records suggest that
there was another group of Quakers from Chester and Bucks Counties, PA moved to
Frederick County, VA in the early1750's, and many of the individuals in both
groups moved thence into North Carolina. The Opequon or Hopewell MM records for
that crucial time period when our ancestors were in Frederick County, VA were
destroyed by fire.
Moon, Thornburgh, Beals/Bales, Mills, Hammer, Leaky, Douglas, Cox and Wilson are
some of the more familiar names but there were many others. Simcock, Mendenhall,
Sanders, Whitaker, Dodd, Beeson, Baldwin, Brown, Dutton, Large, Blakely, Stout
all figured into the interrelationships.

There was more than one Jacob Routh living in Randolph County, NC, but most
records have been sorted out. References in this text to "Jacob Routh of Sandy
Creek" are for the other Jacob (1755) in Randolph County, NC, the man who lived,
raised a family and died in Randolph County, NC. Any reference to "our Jacob" is
for Jacob (1745) who married Martha Redfern and moved to Tennessee in the early
1790's.

Lord Baltimore was granted the "Easter Shore of the Cheasapeake Bay". That area
of Virginia that became Maryland. It seems to be referring to the Isle of Kent-
In 1650-60 arrived the families of BURGESS, (BROSHER?) RINGOLD, HYNSON, JONES,
WICKES, SMYTH, LEEDS, PACA, CHASE, PEARCE, CHAMBERS, TELGHMAN, THONTSON, WROTH
(Routh) and other well known names whose descendants figure prominently in KENT.
1652 JOHN ROUTH, 1652, by John Pouncey, ______ Co. From "Early Virginia
Immigrants 1623-1666" by George Cabell Greer, Clerk Virginia State Land Office
1912, Page 285 Note: My guess is that John Pouncey was the agent responsible for
bringing John over to this Country. The size of land grants in Virginia were
often determined by "headrights" accruing to each free man. Agents were known to
pay for the passage of individuals to gain the benefit of their head rights in
acquiring land, which more than offset the cost of passage.
1683 LAURENCE ROUTH of Hawes married Ann Metcalf also of Hawes May 24, 1683 They
were Quakers and members of the Richmond Monthly Meeting of Quakers , which
included the parishes of Hawes and Aysgarth in Wensleydale. Located in the
North East of York, Both the Richmond and Thirsk MM were part of the York
Quarterly meetings. The place of the marriage is not clear but they may have been
married in the house of someone called Robinson who lived at Countersett. There
was another marriage for Margaret Routh of Hawes to John Metcalf of Carperby on

and LAWRENCE ROUTH. Recorded 10 Mar 1693 (A1:B162). From an Internet query asking
for information on John EYRE. Note: John Kinsman married Chester MM Feb 15,
1684/5 Hannah SIMCOCK daughter of John. Hannah's brother Jacob was grandfather of
Sarah Simcock who married Francis Routh Jr). Their daughter Elizabeth KINSMAN

1691 LAWRENCE ROUTH died in Chester County, PA June 16, 1691 Probate Court,
Chester, Pennsylvania "Att An orphants Court held Att Chester ffor the County of
Chester the 6th day of march 1693/4...." "Humphry Johnson Being Bound to Apere
Att this Court of orphants to Give In An Acount of the Estate of Lawrence Routh
Deseased:...." Johnson asked for and received a continuance until the 13th day
of this month "The orphants Court Court held Att Chester ffor the County of
Chester A Cording to Ajornment the 13th Day of march 1693/4...." At this date
Humphrey Johnson presented an Inventory of the Estate of Lawrence Routh and an
Appraisal taken by Caleb Pusye, Randell Vernon and Robert Carter. There was also
the following- "An Account of the age of the Children of Lawrence Routh when he
Deceased. Tho: Routh was A bout 6 years of age Lawrance Routh was A bout 4 years
ad * old Rachell Routh a boute 2 years and * old ffrances Routh Aboute 8 months
old" Humphrey Johnson and John Beal jointly posted the bond with the Court. Note:
This from a copy of two printed pages from an unidentified source in a files of
the Lawrence W. Routh collection at the Randolph County Library, Ashboro, NC.
The Heading on page 306-307 says "Records of the Courts of Chester County,
Pennsylvania 1681-1697" and seems to be the same pages reproduced in OUR ROUTH
FAMILY by Ross Holland Routh, page 9-10. This was Lawrence Routh born about 1660
in Hawes , North Yorkshire, England, died Chester County, PA June 16, 1691. The
widow, Ann [Metcalf] Routh, married in 1693 Humphrey Johnson. Of possible
significance is the fact that John Beals' full name was John Jacob Beals.

Note: Ann [Metcalf] Routh was forced to sell a piece of land to meet her
expenses. She received permission from the Courts and sold 50 acres to neighbor
and friend, John BEAL.

Jacob Simcock Jr was the father of Sarah SIMCOCK wife of Francis ROUTH Jr
1717 HENRY RUTH came to this country in 1717 from Germany. (Probably Wolfsheim in
the Palatinate Germany). Henry lived in present day Salford Township,
Philadelphia County (became Montgomery County in 1784), PA until 1747 when the
family moved to New Britain Township, Bucks County, PA. The Internet has a large
number of individuals named RUTH who were part of a community of German
Mennonites in PA. They seemed to prefer the spelling Ruth to that of Routh.
They seemed to have a community in Bucks County, PA and some of them even lived
Chester County, PA. They favored the names Jacob, Isaac, Abraham, John and
Joseph. In the records that I scanned I found no males named Zaccariah, Jeremiah,
Lawrence, Francis or Edward.. This community must have been responsible for
Lawrence W. Routh's belief that in Randolph County, NC "Ross Routh's Jacob ROUTH"
was of English stock while his Jacob ROUTH"of Sandy Creek" was of German
derivation. There were two pages copied from an unidentified volume in Lawrence
W. Routh's files. The heading on the odd pages read " Records of the Moravians
in North Carolina" and the even pages read "North Carolina Historical Commission"
we have been unable to trace the source of this text. It chronicled the travels
of a Mr. Soelle in the Randolph County, NC area. There Mr. Soelle speaks of
meeting a JACOB ROTH who was a Dunkard. Jacob Roth spoke of moving to be nearer
the Brethern. (Located just north of Randolph County) There were no dates cited
for the meeting, but it may have been about 1771. Was Jacob Roth really Jacob
Routh or Ruth? An Internet search revealed that there was an Adam Soelle born
Germantown, Philadelphia County, PA in 1700. He was originally a Mennonite,
moved to Conewago Creek, York County, PA to Monocacy (now Carroll) County, MD.
His daughter was married in 1743 in Frederick County, VA. And lived on the Yadkin
River in Rowan County, NC and seemed to belong to the Hope Moravian Church in
Rowan (now Forsyth) County, NC. It is said that at least five of his children
moved to NC and became Moravians. The man chronicled in the text seemed to be a
travelling preacher and must have kept extensive notes or a diary of some sort.
The Internet says Adam Soelle died in 1767 so he cannot be the man in the text,
but that man was probably from Adam's family.

and Swine is a Crop on the laft eare and a half peny on the fore Side of the
right eare. Entered this 9th Day of April Annodom 1719 by Benejah Dunham Town
Clark. This livestock identification that formerly belonged to Lawrance Ruth
Deceased was entered for George Vroom on 4th Day of February 1752. From "The

Note: So Lawrence Routh died between 1741 when he deeded land to his son and 1752
when he was listed as Deceased in the record. It was seldom the practice to
reassign the livestock identification marks immediately upon the death of an
individual. Those who inherited the livestock were allowed to retain the
original mark for a period of time, as there was often no satisfactory way to
remark an animals ear.

1749 On August 27, 1749 EDWARD RUTH of Frederick County, VA was granted 251
acres of land surveyed by Mr. James Genn. It was identified as Tract No. 58 in
Plat on Wappacomo or Great South Branch of the Potomac River and registered in
Grant Book G, page 306 of the Virginia Northern Neck Land Grants 1690-1874. An
abstract was found on page 36 of "Virginia, Northern Neck Land Grants, Volume II,
1742-1775" compiled by Gertrude E. Gray, published 1988. (Cinti Library 929.37552
G779 Vol 1-4) Note: The appearance of Edward Routh in Frederick County, VA is NOT
an isolated event. Research on families allied to the Routh family reveals a
pattern. There seemed to be a mass migration from the Quaker Communities in
Chester County, PA (and the neighboring Bucks County Quaker Communities) starting
about 1733, many of these people moved first to Frederick County, VA and from
there to Guilford, Rowan and Orange Counties in NC.

1740-1750, page 625 LAWRENCE ROUTH-"Made his escape on Friday the 13th of March
last from John Deare, High Sheriff of the County of Middlesex,(New Jersey) one
Lawrence Routh, a short slim fellow, thin faced, and one of his eyelashes is half
white; had on when he disappeared a patched duroy coat, a gray homespun jacket,
is a shoemaker by trade, pretends to be a merchant and did live at Boundbrook.
Any person or persons that takes up or secures him in any gaol so that he may be
had again shall have 5 pounds reward." John Deare Sheriff This first article
appeared in 1750 and again in 1753. Another article similar to this one but
stating that Lawrence was about 30 years old and had been imprisoned for debt.
was also quoted. This was found in the research papers of Lawrence W. Routh and
was contained in a letter written September 26, 1974 from Floyd Reeves of
Nacodoches, TX to Ross Routh. Mr. Reeves was looking for the father of Jonathan
Routh. This info included in the Huber file. This was the son of Lawrence and
Mehitable [____] Routh and brother of Edward and Zacchariah/Zaccheus. Lawrence
ROUTH found in Frederick County, VA Court Records 1753-1754 during the time when
Edward ROUTH was living Frederick County, VA.
1751 JACOB ROUTH- a Jacob Routh witnessed a Will in Chowan County (NE North
Carolina, Perquiman) in 1751 (From the Lawrence W. Routh Collection, Randolph
County Library. Source given as Abstracts of North Carolina Wills by J. Bryan
Grimes) This reference book is in the Cincinnati Library, it was published in
Raleigh in 1910. The entire additional information on page 325 follows- The will
of JOHN SANDERS was written August 18, 1751 and presented to the October Court in
Chowan County in 1751. John Sanders leaves to Sons: Francis "the plantation I now
live on"; John "plantation on Cypress Swamp where Thomas Rutter lives"; Robert,
Jesse, Thomas to each of above named sons is bequeathed Negroes. Daughters:
Mille, Ferbie and Elizabeth Sanders. Wife and Executrix: Mary. Witnesses: John
Loe (or Loce), Jr, John Loe (or Loce), Sr., JACOB RUTH. Clerk of the Court:
James Craven.
Note: The Sanders family in this record may or may not be traced back to Chester
County, PA. Thomas Rutter and John Loe certainly can be traced back. John Loe
was in Chester County, PA in 1722. A John LOWE Sr was located two names away
from Jacob ROUTH and Edmond YORK in the 1779 Tax List of Randolph County, NC, and
John LOWE Jr was on the list of those who refused to take an Oath of Allegience
and were taxed fourfold. He did relent and take the Oath. A Thomas Rutter was a
member of the Philadelphia MM and was given a certificate to Falls MM, Bucks
County, PA to marry on 8, 5, 1685, but he had already married Rebecca Staples at
Falls MM 7, 2, 1685. So there seem to be more than one Thomas Rutter in the area.
Perhaps father and son. There were Sanders/Saunders in both Philadelphia and
Falls MM records as well. There were several men named Sanders/Saunders in
Chester County, PA records, one of them may have gone to Nansemond County, VA,
but so far this is not reflected in the available Internet research. There are so
many differing records on the Internet that it is not possible to identify these
people satisfactorily. Nansemond County, VA is in the SE corner of VA on the NC
border and very near Perquimans (Chowan) County, NC. The proximity of Nansemond
County, VA to Perquimans and Chowan Counties, NC, the use of the female name
FEREBY, and the fact that at least one member of the Nansemond Sanders family was
known to be a Quaker and was among the first members of Deep River MM in
Guilford County, NC in 1778, and in Randolph County, NC records, all suggest that
this John was part of the family of William and Mary [Hall] Sanders of Nansemond
County, VA and Perquimans County, NC JOHN SANDERS probably a son of William and
Mary [Hall] Sanders born about 1690 in Nansemond County, VA, died Perquimans or
Chowan County, NC shortly before August 18, 1751, may have married 1. Mar. 18,
1714/15 Priscilla Pritlow and had children Judith, Priscilla and Joel who was
born 1728. The remaining children listed in the will are probably the children
of John by what may prove to be a second wife named Mary ____. There is a chance
that there were in fact two men named John and two separate families but this
seems to be a subject of controversy among the Sanders researchers. JOEL SANDERS
son of John and Priscilla [Pritlow] Sanders born Nansemond County, VA 1728,
married before 1746 Charity Hollowell and had 13 children, one of whom was called
Ferribe Sanders. This man was said to be a staunch Quaker and was a member of
the Nansemond MM and was issued a certificate to the Cane Creek MM, Orange
County, NC. They were accepted at Cane Creek MM, Orange County, NC in 1762. The
Sanders family appeared in the Quaker records along with Thornburgh, Mills,
Joseph Pattison when Hezakiah Sanders, Joel Sanders, John Sanders and John
Sanders Jr, Martha Sanders and Susannah Sanders all were listed. as original
members of the Deep River MM in Guilford County, NC 1778. Hezekiah (born 1734)
married Martha E, Johnson . The records of Deep River MM might further identify
these individuals. This does introduce a man named JACOB ROUTH born by 1730,
assuming he was of legal age, 21, at time he signed this document, who is older
than the "supposed age" of either of the two known Jacobs in Randolph County, NC.
Finding John Lowe Sr living very near Jacob Routh of Sandy Creek at the later
date increases the likelyhood that the witness to the Will was not only Jacob
Routh of Sandy Creek but Jacob Routh Senior as well.
1752 WILLIAM ROUTH- "Ordered that the orphan William Routh be brought from PA by
Samuel Harlan, be under the care of John Patterson, Esq." Samuel Harlan was a
Quaker who came with the first group from PA about 1752. He died and his widow
moved to Hopewell Meeting in VA From the Lawrence W. Routh Collection, Randolph
County Library. Source given as Orange County, NC Court Records Folio 23-46,
Sept. 1752, North Carolina Archives Note: This sounds like a child, having been
left an orphan, was being brought from Pennsylvania to North Carolina possibly to
join relatives already living in North Carolina. Samuel Harlan's family lived in
Chester and Delaware Counties, PA and were members of the Quaker Community there,
but his widow's move (or was it a return) to Hopewell MM in Frederick County, VA
suggests they may have been in that area too. Records of the family mention "The
Old Kennett Meeting House" which puts them in Chester County, PA. This makes it
likely that the deceased parents of William ROUTH were from Chester County, PA
too, and may or may not have been in Frederick County, VA. Samuel Harlan
brought William ROUTH to John Patterson Esq. There was a John Patterson son of
Robert and Janet [____] Patterson born 1717 Chowan County, NC (in an area that
became Bertie County in 1722), died Orange County, NC 1787, married Sarah
[Tapley] Mulkey widow of Jonathan Mulkey. He was "one of the first eight justices
of Orange County", which confirms the title Esquire in the Court order. He was
also the first treasurer of Hillsborough. It is not certain whether he was
related in any way to the Routh family. A Joseph Pattison was said to be one of
the first members of the Deep River MM Guilford County, NC when it was organized
in 1778, along with the Thornburgh and Mills families. So John Patterson was
probably a Quaker too. It did not give the age of William, perhaps if he was
aged about 12-16, he was apprenticed to John Patterson to learn a trade.
Whatever the reason, there is now a male named WILLIAM ROUTH in the central North
Carolina area.
1753-1754
EDWARD ROUTH- In a 1984 letter from Virginia Bennit to Lawrence W. Routh she
mentions finding Land Records for Edward Ruth in Frederick County, VA Land
records. She did not give the dates of the transactions.(In a subsequent portion
of another letter on July 19, 1984 in Virginia's handwriting she refers to a Mr.
Bryant who found records concerning Edward Routh dated 1753 and 1754 in Frederick
County, VA.) Note: A visit to Winchester, the County seat of Frederick County, VA
on Jan. 30, 2001 confirmed the existence of these Land Deeds and provided
additional information. The first transaction was a mortgage Deed in Deed Book 3,
page 102- 104, dated July 9, 1753 in which EDWARD ROUTH mortgaged Lot 38 on the
South Branch of the Potomac River to Thomas Cresap of Maryland for £40-08-01*..
The second transaction Deed Book 3 pages 202-206 and was a Lease and Release
dated Mar. 6, 1754 and Mar. 7, 1754 of Lot 58, on the South Branch of the Potomac
River containing 251 acres. This land had been obtained by Edward by Deed from
the Proprietors Office of the Northern Neck of Virginia. In other words a grant,
which Edward Routh and his wife Deborah later conveyed to Gabriel Jones for the
sum of £112. Note: The Moon Article says Edward 's wife was a Hammer. This then
is probably DEBORAH HAMMER. This property located in an area that became part of
Hampshire County, VA in 1754 and ultimately part of Hampshire County in West
Virginia. Edward was evidently part of the mass Quaker migration of families
from Chester County, PA to Frederick County, VA before moving on to North
Carolina. He was not part of the grouping of related or Allied families,
Thornburgh, Mills, Beals, Moon and Brown that were living slightly north of
Edward's location in what became Berkeley County, Virginia, and then West
Virginia.
1753-1754 Frederick County, Virginia Court Order Book No. 5, 1753-1754, page
463-464 This is a Judgement in RUTH vs. NEALENS to collect a debt, tried by a
Jury Plaintiff listed as LAWRENCE RUTH assignee of DAVISS RUTH who was assignee
of GARRET DECKER. Defendant listed as JOHN NEALENS The plaintiff was awarded a
settlement in the amount of £8-05-00 and the interest thereon calculated from
Oct. 1, 1746. Note: The exact dates not given with each case, but all entries
made chronologically. This evidently a loan or debt incurred in 1746. Place not
specified, but from the following excerpt from a book on the area it would seem
that the defendant was in Frederick County, VA at the time the debt was incurred.
See 1777-1779. From PIONEERS OF OLD FREDERICK COUNTY, VIRGINIA by Cecil O'Dell,
page 505 Ashby Gap to Vestal Gap Road- On petition of John Hardin and others,
the Orange County (VA) Court ordered on 23/25 March 1742/3 that " the petitioners
clear a road from John Knaillands/Nealings/Nealans/Nealands on the Shenandoah
River to where John Hardin lived and then to the top of the ridge" (Orange
County, Virginia Court Book 3, pp. 113, 392) On 8 June 1744, John Nailans was
granted a license to keep an Ordinary in his house for one year by the Frederick
County Court. (Frederick County Court Book 1, pp. 119, 229) According to Internet
files there was a Lucas Decker born about 1727 who was living "Hampshire County,
VA" when his son John was born in 1750. (That would have been Frederick County at
that date as Hampshire County, VA was formed 1754 and later became West Virginia)
This is the same area where EDWARD ROUTH lived. Lucas Decker's father was Jan
Gerretson Decker which could easily have been anglicized to Garrett. Lucas' wife
was Sarah Kuykendall. It may be a stretch but a Kuykendall family lived Tryon or
Mecklenburg County, NC near Zachariah and Jerimiah Routh.

1754 Birth of Ruth M'Quiston daughter of JANE [ROUTH] M'QUISTON who was a
daughter of MOSES ROUTH of Maryland- See Guilford County, NC Court record
Thompson Vs. Blair 1819 Note: A Moses Routh married Ester IRWIN and died Harford
County, Maryland September 18, 1781.
1756 JOHN RUTH- "In a list of the early settlers of Rowan County (North Carolina)
is the name of John Ruth. According to Eugene H. Bean, John Ruth came to Rowan
County in 1756. This listing was given in the NATIONAL GENEALOGICAL QUARTERLY of
October 1914". From the preface of Tom Turpin's book on Joseph Routh

was first established under the name Chichester Meeting in 1684, and remained
Chichester until 1729 when it was renamed Concord MM. Located in Concord
Township, Chester County,(now Delaware County) PA. Providence MM was
established in Providence Township,(north of Chester Township) Chester County
(now Delaware County), PA. This would seem to be JAMES ROUTH son of Francis
(Jr) and Sarah [Simcock] Routh born Chester, PA 1740. He married and had a son
named FRANCIS ROUTH born Mar/Apr 1765, who died June 11, 1765, and his wife
evidently died about that time too.. He married a second time "out of unity" by
Jan. 3, 1766 was disowned by the meeting and does not appear in the Quaker
records again. SUSANNAH ROUTH probably his sister who was born Springfield,
Township, Chester County, PA abt 1744 (according to Turpin's Joseph Routh
Family). Sussanah evidently attended the MM in Philadelphia up until 1770 and
then returned to the Chester MM, only a few miles distant. This may be the same
JAMES ROUTH who lived Randolph County, NC by 1779. Sarah SIMCOCK's family may
hold a clue for our research. JACOB SIMCOCK born Jan. 6, 1657/8 Stoke, Acton,
Cheshire, England, died 1737 in Abington MM, Philadelphia, PA, married Chester
MM, Chester County, PA Jan. 15, 1684/5 ALICE MARIS. He was said to be a Minister
and Deputy Register General under James Claypoole in 1686. He was the Chester
County, PA coroner in 1691. His children were all born in Ridley Township,
Chester County, PA. He had a son named JACOB SIMCOCK JR born Ridley Township,
Chester County, PA Dept. 25, 1686, died there Feb. 1716/7, married Philadelphia
MM, Philadelphia, PA Apr. 25, 1711 SARAH WALN (possibly as a second marriage)
and had children Joseph, Sarah and John. No dates given for their births but if
Jacob married 1711 and died 1716, Sarah Simcock's birth date falls between those
dates. At age 20-25 Sarah would have been well within the parameters expected
for a woman who married August 25, 1736. The source given in the "Revisited
file" for the children of Francis Routh Jr and Sarah Simcock is the IGI. I think
they missed one! Francis and Sarah may well have named a child after Sarah's
father and had a son named JACOB ROUTH. No proof, but this is the first time a
man named Jacob appeared in the records in connection with the early Routh
family. Note too that there is an exact date for the marriage and the birth of
the first child of Francis and Sarah, why only the eldest child? . Hannah Routh
was born Oct. 15, 1736, after that time the dates of birth for their children
seem to be estimates. A son could easily have been born between 1737 and about
1750.
1759 ZACHARIAH ROUTH- Rowan County Tax List of 1759 JEREMIAH ROUTH- Rowan County
Tax List of 1759 Note: Is this Zachariah Routh (1717) and son Jeremiah (1740)?
Would Jeremiah at age 19 be old enough to be shown on a Tax list? Was he born
earlier than 1740? Need to see a primary record on this or an explanation of
just who was eligible to be taxed. Mark and Joshua Whitaker who were bondsmen at
the marriage of Jane Routh in 1662 were also on this tax list. They had come from
Chester County, PA.
1761 ZACHARIAH ROUTH sued by James Armstrong in Orange County, NC 1761, (similar
record says "sued at Hillsborough"). An Orange County Court record orders the
sheriff of that County make sale of the goods of Zachariah Routh, attached at the
suit of James Armstrong. James Armstrong lived at the area of Lindley's Mill, in
present Alamance County,NC a few miles from Sandy Creek, Randolph County, NC.

1762 JANE RUTH married Rowan County, NC July 28, 1762 JOHN BIBBY ( From preface
of "Joseph Routh Family" by Tom Turpin and source given as Rowan County, NC
Marriage Bonds) That reference also found Cincinnati Library, MARRIAGES OF ROWAN
COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA 1753-1868, compiled by Brent H. Holcomb and published
1981, page 32 (Cinti Library R929.3756 H725)- additional information indicates
Mark Whitaker, Joshua Whitaker were bondsmen and John Frohock, Thomas Frohock
were witnesses. Note: I have found a man named Nathaniel Bibby (or Beebe) in the
area and he was said to have a military record, but no sign of John or any other
individual by that name. Francis (Jr) and Sarah [Simcock] Routh had a daughter
named Jane according to "Revisited" files. She was born about 1748 which would
make her only age 14 at time of marriage, so she could easily have been born
earlier. Good prospect for this record! Particularly good since the records
(see 1759) indicate that her brother JAMES ROUTH married in Philadelphia out of
unity in 1766, disappeared from the records, and could well be the James Routh in
Randolph County records between 1779 and 1815 living in the Sandy Creek area. Not
yet sure of the exact connection to the Whitaker family, except that they were
Quakers in PA (William, father of the two bondsmen died Rowan County, NC 1789)
and had lived in the early 1700's in Kennett Township, Chester County, PA. This
was the site of a large Quaker Community in Chester County, PA. According to the
Internet Mark (born 1726) and Joshua Whitaker (born 1734) are sons of William and
Elizabeth [Carleton] Whitaker born in Kennett Square, Chester County, PA , they
are found in the "Salisbury district" of Rowan County and were on the same 1759
Rowan County Tax List as ZACCHEUS ROUTH and JEREMIAH ROUTH. Mark Whitaker and
others in his family moved to Lincoln County, Tennessee . John Frohock of Rowan
County can be identified, he was an important official in the area and a large if
not pleasant influence on the common folks of Randolph County. They even wrote
unflattering poetry about him. The farmers/Regulators maintained that he had
made a very large fortune by cheating and robbing them. He helped tyrannize the
farmers and the Regulators by charging outrageous fees while holding multiple
official positions. This according to the Randolph County History, published by
the Randolph County Historical Society Commemorating the Bicentennial Year of the
County, 1980, page 30 copied at Cincinnati Library

indicates Jeremiah's wife was Margaret Hawkins. Abraham Alexander was a neighbor
and lived near the present town of Charlotte as did Edward ROUTH. Alexander's
land was located in what is now Cabarrus County taken from the North East quarter
of Mecklenburg County. So they may have lived only 40 miles SSE of where Jacob
and Joseph Routh lived. According to MECKLENBURG SIGNERS AND THEIR NEIGHBORS, by
Worth Stickley Ray, Abraham Alexander was a signer of the Mecklenburgh
Declaration.

Note: There was little helpful information on the Internet about the people
associated with this transaction. The Hendry family was in Frederick County, VA
in the 1750's and associated with the Borden, Hardin and Nicholas/Nickolls
families, all of whom purchased or were granted land in this same area.. They
moved from NC to Greene County, TN. A James Armstrong who was born VA about 1737,
married Elizabeth Kuykendall and lived Anson County, NC in the 1760's had a son
of the same name born about 1762 who died 1814 in Lawrence County, Mississippi.
Francis Beaty was a surveyor as well as a landowner of the Mecklenburg County
lands.

probably the son of the Humphrey Johnson who was administrator on the Estate of
Lawrence Routh in 1691 and married his widow. In Upper Chichester there were
men named John, Joseph and Isaac Larkan, of interest because of the number of
males in the Adamson family with the first name "Larkin". There were many
individuals named Brown (looking for the Moon connections). At this date most of
the families Allied to the Rouths in North Carolina and Tennessee had already
moved to Frederick County, VA and into North Carolina
1768 JEREMIAH ROUTH On April 21, 1768 Jeremiah Routh of Mecklenburg County, NC
sold to Joseph Clark of same County for the sum of £40-00-00 land he had received
by grant Sept. 25, 1766. The grant located on both sides of the Green River
(Polk and Rutheford Counties in NC) Witnessed by Edward Bishop, Richard Powell
and EDWARD ROUTH (Part of this deed described on a hand written sheet in Lawrence

1768 ZACHEUS ROUTH received a Crown grant of land #7018 on page 330 of Patent
Book 23. On 22 December 1768 he received 170 acres in Tryon County, NC on the N.
branches of Long Creek, joining Hoyles corner and Stanley's line. Some of his
close neighbors were John and David Standley, Boston Best, John Nuckols, ___
Linabarger, and ____ Bennit. (COLONY OF NORTH CAROLINA 1765-1775, Abstracts of
Land Patents Volume Two by Margaret M. Hoffman, page 527 Copied at the Cincinnati
Public Library.) Note: An Internet search revealed that a Boston Best (1724-1750)
had been married to Katrina Hoyle born 1735, sister of Michael Hoyle (1730-1792).
Both were children of Peter and Catherine [Dales] Hoyle of Weisbaden District of
Nassau, Germany. Michael was married to Margaretha Dellinger. There seemed to be
no connection to the Routh family other than neighbors. John Nuckols was probably
identical with John Nicholl and John Nickolas in other records of this area..

Term 1768. Note: Jeremiah not mentioned in printed abstract. Frederick Hambright
moved from PA to VA and then to NC, he married Sarah Hardin, was a LtCol. In the
American forces at King's Mountain. Members of the Hardin family of Tryon
County, NC moved on to Knox County, TN before 1801. Hoyles land adjoined that of
Zacchariah. It seems that both Zacchariah and Jeremiah start selling off property
about this time. Strangely enough an Internet file on Michael Hoyle says "Lived
on a farm situated on Big Long Creek, land he had purchased from Zachariah Routh
on 25 November 1769" This does not agree with the date in the Deed abstract
above. If Jeremiah and Zachariah were selling off their land, were they getting
ready to go South to Mississippi?
1768 JOSEPH ROUTH signed "Regulators Advertisement No. 9"(There were about 450
signers of this document. These were petitions that were called Advertisements)
dated 1768 in which residents of Orange County complained of inequitable
treatment regarding taxes and fees imposed by the governing body. ( From preface
of "Joseph Routh Family" by Tom Turpin and source given as Colonial Records of
North Carolina, Vol. 7, page 736) (LWR also says Joseph signed a petition as a
Regulator). THE HISTORY OF NORTH CAROLINA by John W. Moore, Raleigh 1880, as
follows " The term 'Regulator' originated in 1767 at Sandy Creek in Orange
County, now Randolph....it was at Sandy Creek that the complete organization of
the Regulators was formed by written agreement, dated March 22nd 176 7. ...A
majority of them were Baptists." The farmers of the area were being oppressed by
the local governing authorities. Men from Deep River and Sandy Creek were
objecting to tax levies which were increasing in number and amount due, they were
subjected to capricious changes in the status of their land grants. A David
Fanning, was given a commission as Colonel of the Militia by Governor Tryon. He
evidently was ruthless in his aim of stamping out the Regulators by confiscating
property and if challenged would burn property and kill those who opposed him.
The Regulator movement, which originated in the very area in which our early
ancestors lived, spread and grew until it became state wide and their demands
grew for arbitration and a peaceful solution to the problem. Gov. Tryon solved
the problem by mobilizing the Militia to put down the insurrection by force. The
Regulators had gathered by Alamance Creek to write yet another petition to the
Governor when his forces attacked. Tryon defeated the Regulators, many of whom
were unarmed, at the battle of Alamance Creek in 1771. Said by some in North
Carolina to be the real "first battle of the Revolutionary War", and likening the
Regulators to the Colonists and the Governing Proprietors to the Crown. They
went so far as to say "The War of the Regulators" instilled in those of
Mecklenburg County the desire to "throw off the yoke of British oppression" and
led to the creation of the "Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence". And it all
started in our ancestors' back yard. At this juncture in time, it was more
likely just the English aristocracy putting the disgruntled and oppressed, but
uppity farmers in their place. The historical map produced by Randolph County
and sold through the Randolph County, NC Library specifically lists Joseph Routh
as a Regulator up near Sandy Creek (which is not where he lived) but gives the
date as 1772.

1772 February 27, 1772 - John Powell of St. Paul's Parish, GA to Peter Pettypool
of Tryon County 202 acres on Black Water Creek witnessed by Elizabeth Carson and

1768-1786 Note: This must be the record that caused Lawrence W. Routh to say-
JEREMIAH ROUTH witnessed a deed in Tryon County, NC in 1772. From a letter
written 1988 from Lawrence Routh to Virginia Bennit. He notes of this document
that it is the LAST record of Jeremiah Routh in North Carolina. Note: There was
an Elizabeth Carson in Internet files, daughter of John and Esther [Stubbs]
Carson born 1753 and interestingly enough her mother and one sibling were said to
have been born in Chester County, PA, the rest of her siblings born Orange
County, NC. May or may not be significant.
1772 JOSEPH ROUTH member of the Chatham County Militia under Capt. Joab Brooks,
company officer and under Lt. Balum Tomison From preface of "Joseph Routh Family"
by Tom Turpin and no source given Note: Another source gives the date as 1766 and
says Brooks was a loyalist
1775 "EDWARD RUTH signed the Mecklenburg Proclamation" (Lawrence calls it the
Declaration in other records but he seems to be referring to the "Mecklenburg
Declaration of Independence" in these different records. From a hand written
sheet in Lawrence W. Routh's writing. ) I f this is accurate, I was unable to
find a record that supports it. Edward Routh's name appeared in a book entitled
THE MECKLENBURG SIGNERS AND THEIR NEIGHBORS by Worth S. Ray (Cinti Library
R929.3756 R264). Edward was a neighbor, not a signer. The author shows the 1790
Mecklenburg County, NC Census records by numbered districts and then points out
the signers of the Declaration in each District. Edward Routh is in District No.
15 which according to the map in the book, appears to put him about ten miles
East or South East of the center of present day Charlotte in what is today
Matthews, NC. He is listed with 1 male over 16 and 1 female. He would have been
age 77 at this date. While the names of about fourteen men from District 15 are
cited as signers of the Declaration of Independence, Edward Routh's name is not
among them. If there was another document called the Proclamation, I found no
mention of it in the books on Mecklenburg County History. Another copy of that
1790 Census says Edward was in the Salisbury District of Mecklenburg County.
1775-17?? JOSEPH ROUTH- Revolutionary War Service- No exact dates of service
found yet, but descendants indicate he- "settled on Deep River in North Carolina
before the Revolution, fought on the side of the English, was twice wounded...."
From Tom Turpin's book on Joseph Routh. He quoted an 1899 letter by Cynthia
Routh Maxwell. Joseph is said to have later fought in the Continental forces and
seems to be a DAR ancestor.
1775 Roland's MEMOIRS OF MISSISSIPPI says their Rouths came to Virginia from
Wales about 1760 and to Natchez, MS in 1775. The father, Jeremiah, left England
because of a disagreeable father-in-law.(quoted by Lawrence W. Routh in a 1988
letter that he wrote to Virginia Bennit.)
1776 OLD FAMILIES OF LOUISIANA by Stanley Arthur De Kerion "MARY ROUTH along with
her brothers Job and Jeremiah from Virginia had floated down the Mississippi
River on a flat boat before Isaac (Johnson) and his five companions left England"
supposedly in 1776. From a 1967 letter from D. M. Creveling of Lake Charles, LA
to Mrs. L. R. Pollard of Madison, Wis and quoted by Lawrence W. Routh in a 1988
letter that he wrote to Virginia Bennit.
1777 JEREMIAH ROUTH granted 500 acres of land in Mississippi October 13, 1777

1777-1779 DAVISS RUTH whose name appeared in 1754 Frederick County, VA Court
Records with LAWRENCE RUTH apparently was a resident of Yohogania, County, VA,
located in what became Washington County, PA. He appeared in the Yohogania
County Court Records in these years and was the defendant in a suit brought by
John Decker. In 1779 was made executor on the Estate of a Dennis Stephens. Note:
See 1753-1754. Having made Lawrence Routh an assignee of a note or debt by
1753-4, and Lawrence being in the same place as Edward Routh suggests that there
is a family connection.

accuracy of the grant date. Source given as "English Land Grants in Mississippi

Is it possible that 1768-1769 is the time of the actual grant and the survey and
paper work consumed additional time so that the Deeds were not issued until ten
years later? Seems like a long time.

Library Note: No wonder Joseph Moon got out of there! Joseph Moon was a Quaker
and the man who moved first to East Tennessee with the Routh family and then
about 1804 to Clinton County, OH. Two of his children married two of Joseph
Routh's children and those families plus three others of Joseph Routh's children
followed the identical migration pattern and were part of "The Moon Colony"in
Ohio. The John Lowes Sr & Jr were both witnesses on the Will of John Sanders in
Chowan County, NC in 1751 along with Jacob ROUTH. The Hobsons and Becks were
related to Isaac Stout or his wife. Isaac probably the father of Sarah Stout who
married Isaac ROUTH in Tennessee. "Our Jacob Routh", Joseph Routh and Isaac
Redfern located in the southern part of the county by 1788. Jacob Routh of Sandy
Creek purchased his property in that year near in-laws Edmond, John and Shubal
York in the northern part of the county along with James Routh. I believe he was
Jacob of Brush Creek in this record. Lawrence W. Routh thought Jacob of B.
Creek was Jacob Routh Senior who died before 1790. If that is the case, Why
aren't there three Jacobs in these Tax records? Jacob of Sandy Creek, Jacob of
Brush Creek and Our Jacob. There were only two and I believe Jacob Routh of B.
Creek, Jacob Routh Senior, and Jacob Routh of Sandy Creek are all titles for the
same man, and he wasn't "our Jacob".
1781 JOSEPH ROUTH- "John Walker, Isaac Johnson, and Joseph Ruth, discharged from
Confinement on their obliging themselves to perform their Tour of duty. Capt
Hines, Walker's surety, John Johnson's surety; Isaac Johnson, Sup.; Wm Deaton and

date included for this occurrence. Note: Capt Hines/Hinds signed Regulator
Advertisement No. 8 in 1768. Note that Joseph Routh was on John and Joseph
Hind's 1779 Tax list. Joseph Routh refused at that time to take an oath of
allegiance or to give the authorities his Tax information. I wondered at the date
of Joseph Routh's incarceration and if it was 1768 or 1779, but Lawrence W. Routh
said it was 1781. It must have been during the Revolutionary war, if Joseph is a
DAR ancestor. Note also that Mary Routh daughter of Jeremiah (1740) and Margaret
[Hawkins] Routh born Rowan County, NC abt. 1758, married Adams County, MS Isaac
Johnson. Any relation to Isaac Johnson in Randolph County? An Isaac Johnson
mentioned above under 1776. Coincidence?. John and Joseph Hines/Hinds were sons
of Joseph and Rutha [Baldwin] Hinds they were born NJ but both married in
Guilford County, NC, lived Randolph County and John Hinds died in Knox County, TN
in Sept. 1810.

Poll Tax, none had reached the age of 50 years at which time one was usually
assessed on property only. The only Jacob Ruth on this list is two names away
from Jubill York, and both men are known to live on land that was part of the
original York Grant at Sandy Creek. Where is "our Jacob"? Joseph Moon lives
next to Joseph Bookout and his sister Rachel married Joseph's son, Marmaduke
Bookout. There are others named Henery Garnor (Garner), Richard Hotson
(Hudson), Thomas Comor (Comer), Samuel Stout all surnames of either Routh or Moon
spouses and possibly people who also were part of the group that moved to
Tennessee from Randolph County.
1785 To the Honourable Gennerall Assembly for the State of North Carolina "The
Petition of the Inhabitance of Randolph County Humbly Sheweth That a Number of
them Labour at a Great Disadvantage in Attending on Public Meetings Owing to the
Place whare Coarte is held being so fare from the Center of the said County...."
They wish the Public Buildings be located near the center of the County- Signed
by 331 inhabitants among those signatures was "a cluster" of familiar names-

Court at this date met in the North East part of the County which explains why
the Sandy Creek people did not sign this petition, that is where they lived.
They were part of a group which in 1788 presented their own petition, with even
more signatures (360), asking that the Public Buildings remain right where they
were. If the grouping of names indicates neighboring individuals we may have a
related group of people here all from the South East part of the County. Joseph's
son, Edward, was only aged 15 at this date and that does not seem old enough to
sign a petition, but the text accompanying these two petitions leaves this open
to speculation, saying that some underage single males probably did sign the
petition. There seemed to be some unusual discrepancies in the signatures and
the method of signing up adherents to these petitions. We may even have Edward
Routh age 72 and no longer living in Mecklenburg County, but being "infirm", as
stated in his later Land Grant, he was possibly locating near his sons Jacob and
Joseph. Edward's brother, Zaccheus, was no longer in Mecklenburg County, but was
now living in Mississippi. If this is the case Edward and his wife evidently
returned to Mecklenburg County and were listed in the 1790 Census as living near
present day Charlotte. If this is Edward ROUTH, father of Joseph and Jacob, and
Edward's wife was named Deborah HAMMER, Abraham HAMMER could well be related to
them too. He was a Quaker and the father-in-law of John N. ADAMSON who was the
brother of Simon Adamson Jr who married Eleanor ROUTH daughter of Jacob and
Martha [Redfern] ROUTH..
1788 To the Honourable the General Assembly of the State of North Carolina "The
Petition of Sundry Inhabitants of Randolph County Sheweth that a good Court House
Prison Pillory & Stocks have been lately erected at the Cross Roads, in and for
the use of the said County; That Some people however Seem to be dissatisfied
therewith & perhaps may send a petition to the Assembly...." These petitioners
want the Public Buildings to remain at the Cross Roads and a town established at
that location. There were 360 signatures among them-

Note: The result of these petitions was that the County seat was indeed moved to
the center of the County to present day Ashboro. These petitions neatly divided
the folks in the north of the County from those in the south. These are the
Sandy Creek people on this petition, all living on or near the original "York
grant". Jacob Routh "of Sandy Creek"married Mary/Polly YORK and in this same
year purchased land that was part of the original York grant. These individuals
all mentioned in that deed below. The continued presence of James (over age 45 in
1800 Randolph County census or born before 1755) strengthens the probability that
he is a brother of Jacob Routh of Sandy Creek, who's age is still unproven. Both
of these petitions and all of the signer's names were contributed by Harold

1788 JACOB ROUTH purchased from William and Charity Fields for £50 "hard money",
120 acres of land "on Sandy Creek, Randolph County, NC granted to Semor York from
the Earl of Granville on August 1, 1758 to William Ingelson Jan. 20, 1759, to
Semor York 1774, also all rights of said Silvana York and Semor York to William
Field" Witnessed by John York and John Chambers. From Randolph County, NC Land

Randolph County Library, Ashboro, NC Note: On the General Index to Real Estate
Conveyances, Randolph County this was listed as being in Book 3, page 315.. In
this same year Jacob purchased an additional 108 Acres from Shubal York witnessed
by Aaron York and Edmond York in Book 3, page 327. Shubal York probably a close
relative of Jacob's wife Polly [York] Routh and evidently lived near them in tax
record above..

located on Flat Branch adjacent to Edwards and the County Line in July 1788 From

of Martha Redfern wife of JACOB ROUTH and Mary/Polly Redfern wife of JOSEPH
ROUTH. He lived in close proximity to the Routh brothers.
1788 EDWARD RUTH/ROUTH- Grant #3629 to Thomas Malloy Law passed Oct. 14, 1783;
grant issued Dec. 10, 1788; grant surveyed June 7, 1796 Edward Ruth sold this
grant to Thomas Malloy Apr. 2, 1796. Warrant ordered made direct to Malloy From
a hand written sheet in Lawrence W. Routh's writing. This grant referred to in
other research as being in Davidson County, East Tennessee. No source given for
the record. Note: Lawrence W. Routh said it was grant # 3629, but the record
copied at the Cincinnati Library clearly shows the Grant No. to be 3630, Picky!,
picky! (#3629 went to the heirs of Thomas Bond, 84 mos service and 640 acres)

Note: Lawrence W. Routh said the land was in Davidson County, Tennessee and that
Edward assigned the land to one Thomas Malloy see above- I would like to note
that the time in service of 84 months seemed excessive but more than half of
those in this particular list served the exact same time, of those names more
than half had the allotment going to "heirs of" and of those names left, most
were termed infirm. This was clearly a list of mature veterans. At age 70 this
date, Edward was not a likely candidate to be pushing into frontier territory.

neatly copied these name in a series of alphabetical lists making it impossible
to determine exactly who lived next to whom. These original records had six

1792 BENJAMIN ROUTH-"Then there is a quote from DEVILLE'S COLONIAL MARRIAGE
CONTRACTS, giving the marriage of a probable Benjamin Routh in 1772, a native of
Mecklenburg County, NC, son of Zaquire." (quoted by Lawrence W. Routh in a 1988
letter that he wrote to Virginia Bennit, and the year 1772 is not accurate.) The
dates make much more sense using the data in Harold Huber's file- The bride was
Mrs. Sarah Estanli or Stanley and the marriage was in Auoyelles, Louisiana June
23, 1792. A more complete record was found in the [email protected] dated July
8, 1999 and submitted by Ann Baker as follows- "Marriage Record - as entered by
the Spanish clerk 23 Jun 1792: Benjamin Routh of Auoyelles Post, (Louisiana)
native of Maclenbon (sic) in Carolina, son of Zaquire Routh & Bord Brege to Sarah
widow of Benjamin Estanli, resident of Ayoyelles" Note: According to Black's Law
Dictionary, Fifth Edition the word "Borg in Saxon law meant a pledge or a pledge
giver or surety. The name given among the Saxons to the head of each family...."
, but the word "Borgbriche or Bord- brigch meant a breach or violation of
suretyship" which does not make sense here. While still in Tryon County, NC in
1768 the land of Zacceus Routh was adjacent to land owned by a John Stanley and a
David Stanley. In 1768 Zaccheus and Jeremiah were busy selling off their land,
probably in preparation for the move to Mississippi. Did the Stanley's travel
south with the Routh's?
1793 In this year members of the Routh family and other related families left
Randolph County, NC and moved to East Tennessee From preface of "Joseph Routh

date. James Bain who took this (and the 1803) tax list spelled Henry as Henery
and Jeremiah as Jerimiah for everyone with those names on his lists. The Stouts
are the sons of Peter and Margaret [Cypert] Stout. They were a Quaker family and
had intermarriages with the Brown and Moon families and ties to several of the
Chester County, PA families, though they were born in York or Lancaster Counties,
PA. Several of their family moved to Tennessee and John was known to be part of
the Moon Colony that moved to Ohio. Samuel was the grandfather of Sally Stout
who married in Jefferson County, TN Isaac ROUTH in 1807 and then moved to Ohio.
1800 JACOB ROUTH (of Sandy Creek) purchased 43 acres of land in Randolph County
from JOHN ROUTH in Book 8, page 195. 1800 (From the Grantor/Grantee Index of
Randolph County, NC) Note: This seems to show that John Routh was not part of the
group who moved to Tennessee, but remained in NC. If Sarah below in 1800 census
is his wife/widow he either remained in NC and died, or he left her.

Note: James Ruth is over 45 here born at least by 1755 and probably a
contemporary of the Jacobs. Certainly he is not a son of either of the Jacobs
unless Jacob of Sandy Creek is a lot older than the estimated age used by
Lawrence W. Routh of 1755, and James is a son by an earlier marriage. Lawrence
Routh didn't believe James belonged with his family, but the fact that he lived
near Sandy Creek and stayed in Randolph County sure gives them an edge in
claiming James. Samuel Redfern is a son of Isaac Redfern.

paid no Poll Tax, or over aged 50), husband of Eleanor ROUTH with Simon's

daughter Richard and Sussanah [Brown] Moon. Is SAMUEL RUTH the same man found in
the Randolph County, NC 1790 Census on page 311 of the original records? Jacob
Ruth (1745) was on page 293, and Joseph Ruth (1747) was on page 291. Isaac
Redfern, brother of Martha and Mary on page 292. Samuel was enumerated with 2
males over 16, 5 males under 16, and 3 females. The fact that he was excused from
paying Poll Tax probably means he was over the age of 50 this date. WILLIAM RUTH
probably the William Routh who married Jefferson County, TN Phebe Hodges on April
21, 1803, certificate #482. Capt. Charles Hodges is of the right age to be the
father of Phebe, but the Hodges records on the Internet do not seem to include
females. Is William a son of Samuel? The Thornburgh and Mills families both
from Randolph County, NC as is Joseph Moon and his son Daniel, but not sure who
Nathaniel is. Henry Thornburgh Senior was married to Rachel Moon thus Joseph
Moon's uncle. Also on this list are the names Beeson, Baldwin, Mendinghall,
Roberts, Rees, Williams and others.
1802 According to minutes of the Pawpaw Hollow Baptist Church in Sevier County,
TN Jacob and Martha [Refern] Routh were among the original members in 1802. This
evidently while the church was located in Knox County and before it's 1820 move
to Paw Paw Hollow in Sevier County, TN. What was the name of the Church at this
date? See: 1820
1803 The Randolph County, NC 1803 Tax List taken again this year by James Bains
Esq as he did in 1799, but this time he did NOT arrange the list in alphabetical
order. This list has four men named Routh in a sequential group as follows-

Note: Copied at Randolph County Library. This certainly looks like Jacob Routh
of Sandy Creek on the home farm with three sons who are of voting or at least
"taxable"age. This makes it probable that one of the unidentified sons of Jacob
Routh born by 1782 was named Isaac Routh. Note that the 1799 Tax list has three
men listed Jacob Routh (of Sandy Creek) followed by Henery Routh and Jeremiah
Routh. So Isaac came of age between 1799 and 1803 or born 1778- 1882. Isaac not
in 1800 or 1810 Census, nor was he in the Randolph County Marriage Records or the
Land & Property Index. He seems to have left the area.

with 150 acres and 1 Poll (Note: This land could well have been very close to the
East TN border). From Burke County, NC List of Taxables for 1805 abstracted by
Ransom McBride and contained in NCGSJ Vol 8 #4, Nov. 1982, page 231. copied at
the Cincinnati Public Library. Note: Burke County, NC at this date took in the
present counties of Avery, Caldwell, Mitchell Yancey, Madison, McDowell, and SW
portion of Alexander. There were only about 144 names on the list and among them
was Daniel Boone, but no other familiar names connected to the family.
1806 JACOB ROUTH Sold or gave 64 acres of land at Sandy Creek to JEREMIAH ROUTH,
Book 11, page 101. From the Grantor/Grantee Index of Randolph County, NC Note:
Back in Randolph County this is Jacob Routh of Sandy Creek (son of Zachariah) to
his son Jeremiah. While Lawrence W. Routh came to believe his line of Rouths was
separate from our line, it seems significant that the combination of the names
Zaccheus, Jacob, Jeremiah, Isaac and Jesse were in both families.
1806 KNOX COUNTY, TENNESSEE TAX LIST In the same year that at least five children
of Joseph Routh moved from East Tennessee to Ohio, Sussanah Routh who was married
to Levi Leaky and Edward Routh children of Joseph (1747) were included on the Tax
List of East Tennessee living in Knox County, in Captain Boyd's Company. There
are several familiar Surnames also in the same Company- alphabetized list

Edward ROUTH had a Licensed STUD HORSE on this Tax List, his name was NERO, and
Edward paid $2.00 State Tax, $.50 County Tax and $1.00 Jail Tax. from EARLY EAST

Tennessee. Note: EDWARD ROUTH was the eldest child of Joseph Routh (1747). Levi
Leaky's wife was SUSSANAH ROUTH, daughter of Joseph Routh (1747). According to
THE JOSEPH ROUTH FAMILY 1747-1979 by Tom Turpin, page 11, Levi Leaky died about
1808 and in 1818 Susannah moved to Butler County, OH where she and some of her
children stayed until 1822 when they moved on to Henry County, IN. 1822 is the
year Henry County, IN was established from "unorganized territory" but was part
of the Voting District of Delaware County, IN in the 1820 Census.
Charles and Margaret [Davis] Blackley had among their children- Alexander Blakely
born Montgomery County, VA April 5, 1773, married Knox County, TN Nov. 18, 1799
(William Dodd bondsman) Sarah Leaky daughter of William and Elizabeth [Scott]
Leaky and sister of Levi Leaky who married Sussanah ROUTH; Agnes Blakely who
married William Dodd and had daughters, Sarah Dodd who married Jefferson County,
TN Mar. 9, 1826 Solomon ROUTH and Anna Dodd who married Jefferson County, TN Feb.
20, 1821 Robert Covey; Charles Blakely who married Knox County, TN Nov. 27, 1815
Polly ROUTH and Mary Blakely who is said in the Blakely records to have married
James ROUTH, but in other Internet records to have married Isaac ROUTH (1772)
Josiah DODD had on the page a footnote which read "Married Mary Lutell, daughter
of Richard Lutell of Amherst County, VA." He did not pay poll tax thus over age
50 and probably the father of William Dodd who married Agnes Blakely and had a
son Josiah Dodd who appeared in the 1830 Census in Knox County, TN near his
sisters who had married Solomon Routh and Robert Covey.
1806-1811 The migration of "THE MOON COLONY" from the Knox/Jefferson County, TN
to Clinton County, Ohio and also Butler and Brown Counties in that SW Ohio area.
This move was chronicled in an Article in the September 7, 1894 issue of the
London Times. (London is a small town 25 miles SW of Columbus, Ohio) . The Moon
and Routh families had lived close to each other in Randolph County, NC, moving
on to East Tennessee and thence into Ohio. The Article was written for a family
reunion in Martinsville, Clinton County, Ohio by JOSEPH ROUTH MOON born Sevier
County, TN July 25, 1802, son of Samuel and Martha [Routh] Moon, a grandson of
Joseph Routh and, the great grandson of Edward Routh. The following paragraph
deals with the Routh family.-
"The Routh family were originally from Wales. The great grandfather's name was
Edward, his wife's name was Hammer. Grandfather's name was Joseph Routh, and his
wife's name was Molly Redferon and was Scotch-Irish descent. Grandfather Routh
settled on Deep River, Chatham County, North Carolina, before the Revolutionary
War, and sometime before 1796 moved to East Tennessee, Knox County with their
families of sons and daughters as follows; Edward who married Jennie Douglas;
Jesse who married Nancy Douglas; Jeremiah who married Ann Stout; John who married
Jane Moon; Isaac who married Sallie Roberts; Susannah who married Levi Lakey;
Martha who married Samuel Moon; and Polly who married Isom Good."
Five Children of Joseph Routh (1747) were involved in this move and a sixth

wife Sarah Sloat SUSANNAH ROUTH, widow of Levi Leaky joined them in 1818

(page # original record) THOMPSON vs. BLAIR, from Guilford County, NC Nov. Term
1819 MOSES RUTH of Maryland had daughter Jane who married Robert M'Quiston. They
had daughters Ruth born 1754 and Jane born 1756. By 1760 Jane Sr. was widowed;
she married as a second husband Thos. Blair in 1765. Ruth married Robt.
Thompson. Jane Jr. married Alexander Nelson, then ____ Short. Mentioned was
James Archer who died 1799. From NCGSJ (North Carolina Genealogical Society
Journal)Vol. 7 #3, page 124. Note: Jane [Mquiston] Nelson married 2nd Aaron Short
1826 in Tennessee. This looks like a dispute over an estate between a mother and
daughter, probably, Robert M'Quiston's estate. At least one of Moses Routh's
children, Jane [Ruth] M'Quiston Blair, must have been living Guildford County
this date. This Moses said in Internet records to have died Harford County, MD
September 18, 1781. Note that Harford County, Maryland is on the northern part of
the state and about 40 miles from Chester County, PA. That record also says he
married Ester IRWIN who was born about 1701 in Rathmelton, Ireland. Jean [RUTH]
Mquiston Blair was living in Guilford County, NC when her daughter Martha Blair
was born Feb. 12, 1771. Martha married John Blair III, died Feb. 10, 1853 in
Tennessee. Note that were only two unidentified Rouths in Randolph County
Marriage records and one was named MOSES ROUTH who married Dec. 17, 1843
ELIZABETH RIGHTSELL. The Rouths of Sandy Creek lived next to a family named
Rightsell. They also lived next to a JAMES ROUTH for many years, and the sons of
James in the 1790 census have never been identified. Four men named McCuistian
were on the 1800 Jefferson County, TN Tax list, James Sr and Jr, Andrew and
Joseph.
1820 Baptist Church moves from Knox County, TN to Sevier County, TN IN THE SHADOW
OF THE SMOKIES, Sevier County, Tennessee Cemeteries published by the Smoky
Mountain Historical Society. Page 45 says- In March 1820 the church members met
and agreed "to move her residence to a place called Pappaw Hollow in Sevier
County." Previously the church had been located in Knox County. In the minutes
of Paw Paw Hollow Baptist Church for May, 1822 we find where the church appointed
a committee to "view a place for a graveyard." The committee, made up of
"Brothers" John Lockhert, Moses Long, Jacob Routh and Zachariah Routh, made a
report in the same meeting that they had viewed and laid off a burying place. The
report goes on to say that many of the early families are buried there and
mentions specifically the "Ruths" and the Douglas families but it also says that
none of the stones are marked and there is no exact information on those buried
there. It does not reveal the exact location or the name of this church before
it was moved to Paw Paw Hollow or why the congregation decided to move.
General Routh says Jacob's son Zaccheus and wife Nellie joined the church in
1820. Jacob's son John and his wife Elizabeth Mashman were members by 1821 and
that "Other members of Jacob's family were his brother Isaac and his wife Mary
W., who were members until they were dismissed by letter in Aug. 1821." Note:
Kenna Routh of Baldwin, KS has read these church records and relates that there
was no specific relationship stated between Jacob and Isaac Routh in these
records. Male members were all called "brother", but it was only in relation to
the common membership in the congregation. Internet information indicates that
the Paw Paw Hollow Baptist Church was an offshoot of the Boyd's Creek (Sevier
County) Baptist Church and was formed "in the forks of the Holston and French
Broad Rivers, Knox County December 22, 1802".

it seemed that only males were listed. Isaac HAMMER was son of Abraham and Rachel
HAMMER living near Jacob and Joseph ROUTH in Randolph County and his sister Mary
HAMMER married John N. ADAMSON a son of Simon ADAMSON Jr. and Eleanor ROUTH. Not
entirely sure of the Simon ADAMSON in this record unless he is the son of Jesse
T. ADAMSON a brother of Simon ADAMSON Jr. A Mary ROUTH married in Jefferson
County, TN June 24, 1832 John LARGE, and Mary is as yet unidentified, but it is
of interest that the Large family followed the Quaker migration route from
Chester County, PA to Frederick County, VA into NC and then into TN. William YORK
was the brother of Mollie [York] ROUTH wife of Jacob ROUTH (1755) of Sandy Creek,
Randolph County, NC.
1826 JEFFERSON COUNTY, TENNESSEE JACOB ROUTH'S will was written Sept. 13, 1826
and in it Jacob Routh, Cabinet maker of Jefferson County, TN left everything to
his wife Martha, His son John was appointed his executor and at Martha's demise
the estate was to be divided equally among his heirs. (Not specifically named)

1833-1834 ZACCHEUS ROUTH and JEREMIAH ROUTH were part of the "MISSOURI MIGRATION"
in which a number of interrelated families left East Tennessee in the early
1830's to take advantage of the newly available Public Lands being offered by the
government in Missouri. Those families, some of whom had previously been in
Randolph County, NC with the Routh family were Adamson, Bales, Wilson,
Thornburgh, Douglas and Cates. Their first acquisition of land in Missouri was
in Ray County which at that date encompassed a large area in the North West
portion of the state. Jeremiah Routh had received a land bounty for service
during the War of 1812 and his brother Zaccheus obtained land next to that bounty
land in the Township of Richmond, Ray County, MO. Both men continued to purchase
land Zccheus in 1835 and 1836 and Jeremiah in 1837 and 1843. Jeremiah's son JOHN
ROUTH obtained land in 1838 near that of his father. Also in the same area were
Jacob Adamson and William Bales who was married to Elizabeth Adamson, both
Elizabeth and Jacob were children of Eleanor Routh daughter of Jacob (1745).
There were several other children of Eleanor who settled to the west of Ray
County when the Platte lands were opened. Note: These Land records as well as

FAMILIES ALLIED TO THE ROUTH FAMILY
The members of the ROUTH FAMILY were at one time Quakers, but as time passed more
and more of them became less inclined to pursue that way of life. It has become
clear that while the ROUTHS were not generally found in the Quaker records, they
associated with families that were. They traveled with them following the same
migration patterns, settled near them and married them.
It is interesting that several branches of the Routh family say "They came from
Wales". This statement may stem from the fact that in Chester County, PA the
Routh family lived among Welsh Quakers. The first three Townships laid out in
Chester County were entirely populated by Quakers from Wales, recruited by
William Penn, and was called "The Welsh Tract". The chances are good that one
or more of the Routh wives whose last names are unknown are from that Welsh
community, thus "Our ancestors came from Wales" has some basis in fact.
EDWARD ROUTH born Mar. 25, 1713 son of Lawrence and Mehitable [____] Routh was
proven by Frederick County Land records to have received a grant of land in 1749
in Tract 58 in the Wappacomo Plat and was living in Frederick County, VA at least
until 1754. The area where Edward ROUTH lived is now located in Hampshire
County, WV. It is probable that the Thornburgh, Moon, Brown, Mills and Beals
families settled for a time in an area that is now part of Berkeley County WV.
It is also probable that they were within 30 miles of each other. What once
seemed like an isolated piece of information, has now revealed a major migration
pattern beginning with the Quaker Community in Chester County, PA, and involving
a number of allied families.
It seems likely that those families that trace their movements from Chester
County, PA or Bucks County, PA to Frederick County, VA, to the Piedmont area of
NC then on to East Tennessee were acquaintances of long standing and more and
more of them are turning out to be related in some way.
Here, on the theory that if you can't find the records of the family you want,
look for the families that were associated with them. This is the result of an
Allied family search. The interrelationships are many, these are sure to be
incomplete, but all of these families had a definite influence on the ROUTH
family.
ADAMSON SIMON ADAMSON SR son of John and Ann [Scuse or Skew] Adamson born
Springfield Township, Bucks County, PA 1733. His mother died when he was born and
the records indicate the women of the Gwynedd Meeting cared for the infant.
Simon died Knox or Jefferson County, TN. He married in Pennsylvania "out of
unity" 2 mo 1758 and was dismissed from the Quaker meeting.(probably Gwynedd MM)
It is probable that he married a second time to an Eleanor, and this is a source
of much confusion and speculation in Adamson research. Internet sources list
Eleanor MOON or Margaret___, and another source says "records show that a Simon
Adamson married Mrs. Eleanor Lewis in 1766" No source for this record given and
no location specified, and she would have been a second wife. We have not yet
found any authority for a marriage to any one of these individuals, but it did
precipitate an interest in the MOON family, particularly since Jack Stambaugh
author of The Adamson as We See Them believes she was Eleanor [MOON] Lewis.
Simon moved to NC where a number of his children were born, including his sons
Simon ADAMSON Jr and John N. ADAMSON and Jesse T. ADAMSON. From there the family
moved to East Tennessee where Simon Sr and Simon Jr died, Simon Jr's widow
Eleanor [ROUTH] Adamson and their children moved from Tennessee to Ray and Platte
Counties, MO. From Missouri they split up, some moving to Leavenworth County, KS
about 1856 and some to Collin County, TX.- SIMON ADAMSON JR son of Simon Sr. was
born NC 1763, died Jefferson County, TN 1814, married Randolph County, NC about
1787 ELEANOR ROUTH daughter of Jacob and Martha [Redfern] Routh.
JOHN N. ADAMSON son of Simon Sr. was born Dec. 9, 1767, according to Cane Creek
MM records he married Mary HAMMER. Mary Adamson (formerly Hammer) was dismissed
from the Cane Creek MM, Orange County, NC for marrying out of unity on Oct. 7,
1786. It must be noted that Mary was reinstated as she was given a certificate
to Lost Creek MM in Jefferson County, TN in 1806. Mary HAMMER was the daughter of
Abraham and Rachel [____] Hammer born Randolph County, NC July 31, 1768. Abraham
HAMMER found living near Jacob ROUTH, Joseph ROUTH and Isaac REDFERN in Randolph
County Records. JESSE T. ADAMSON son of Simon Sr. was born 1758/9 probably in NC
married Mary WELLS who was in the Cane Creek MM records had among his children
John and Joseph- JOHN ADAMSON son of Jesse T. and Mary [Wells] Adamson,(this does
not agree with records from K.A.R.D. files which have John son of Jesse marrying
someone else and living a long life, and do not know which is correct) born about
1780 , died East Tennessee by 1807, married Knox County, TN Jan. 5, 1801 REBECCA
LEAKY daughter of William and Elizabeth [Scott] Leaky, no date given for her
birth but her sister was born 1781/2 in Surry County, NC. The bond signed by John
Adamson and John Leaky, Rebecca's brother. They had two children John ADAMSON
born about 1803 and Charlotte ADAMSON born about 1804. William Leakey Sr was
appointed guardian of these two children by a Court in Knox County, TN in July
session 1807. This has caused some researchers to believe that both parents were
dead by this date. It was common practice for the Court to appoint a relative as
guardian of minor children to protect the inherited interests and rights (usually
financial or land related) of those minor children, particularly when a widow was
contemplating remarriage. Internet files reveal that some researchers in the
Beals/Bales family believe that Jacob BEALS married Rebecca Adamson a daughter of
Simon Adamson Sr. in Knox or Jefferson County, TN. I tend to believe Jacob BEALS
married the young widow, Rebecca [Leaky] Adamson. Rebecca's sister, Sarah
LEAKY, married Knox County, TN Nov. 18, 1799 ALEXANDER BLAKELY. They were nieces
of Levi LEAKY and Sussanah [ROUTH] LEAKY. JOSEPH ADAMSON son of Jesse T. and Mary
[Wells] Adamson. He and some of his siblings moved to Lost Creek MM in 1797.
Joseph was disowned for marrying out of unity on Jan. 31, 1807. This first
marriage was to a daughter of CHARLES BLAKELY but her first name is unknown. On
Oct. 3, 1815 he married as a second wife his cousin ALICE ADAMSON daughter of
Thomas "Byrd" and Rachel [Williams] Adamson. Thomas was another son of Simon
Adamson Sr. REBECCA ADAMSON said in Internet files to be a daughter of Simon Sr.
born Guilford County, NC about 1780, married Lost Creek MM, Jefferson County, TN
1792 (12 years old WOW!) JACOB BEALS/BALES son of Thomas (born Nottingham,
Chester County, PA )and Sarah [Antrim or Ancram] Bales. See above- This is much
more likely to be REBECCA [LEAKY] ADAMSON.
BEALS or BALES JOHN JACOB BEALS lived Chester County, PA in the very early days.
He was on the List of Taxables in 1693 living in Ashtowne Township, Chester
County, PA along with only eight other names. It appears that he may have been
particularly close to the Lawrence ROUTH family. An Internet record calls him
John JACOB Beals, a middle name that may bear some significance to us in our
search for the origin of the name Jacob in the ROUTH family. He was born 1650 in
England, married Mary CLAYTON born Jun. 29, 1665 in Rumbaldaweeke, Sussex,
England. On march 10, 1691 LAWRENCE ROUTH and JOHN BEALE were witnesses on a
land transaction in Chichester Township, Chester County, PA. The land was sold
by John Kinsman for £15 to John Eyre and was 100 acres in Chichester Township
bounded on land of Humphrey Scarlett. Witnesses Joshua Fearne and Joseph Coeburn.
Note: John Kinsman married Chester MM Feb 15, 1684/5 Hannah SIMCOCK daughter of
John. Hannah's brother Jacob was grandfather of SARAH SIMCOCK who married FRANCIS
ROUTH JR. John and Hannah [Simcock] Kinsman's daughter, Elizabeth KINSMAN, born
in November 1685, married Nov. 13, 1704 Concord MM John DUTTON son of the
immigrant John Dutton and they had a son - KINGSMAN DUTTON born 1715, married
ANNE ROUTH daughter of FRANCIS ROUTH SR and Barbara (perhaps Barbara Howell).
Anne's niece, HANNAH ROUTH (dau. Francis Routh Jr), married Kingsman's first
cousin once removed, THOMAS DUTTON son of Richard and Mary [Martin] Dutton After
the death of Lawrence ROUTH in 1691 the Court gave permission to the widow Ann
[Metcalf] ROUTH to sell 50 acres of land to acquire funds for the support of her
family. JOHN BEALS, purchased that land in a deed dated Oct. 13, 1693.
While Humphrey JOHNSON was administrator on the Estate of LAWRENCE ROUTH in 1693,
both Humphrey Johnson, who married the widow in this year, and JOHN BEALS jointly
posted bond with the Court. John BEALS and wife Mary [Clayton] Beals had a son
named John- JOHN BEALS son of John Sr. and Mary [Clayton] Beals born Ashton or
Aston Township, Chester County, PA 28th day 1st month, 1685 , died Prince George

differ from ours) to be the daughter of Simon Adamson Sr. See Rebecca under

Frederick County, VA on April 14, 1758 to New Garden MM, NC. They were accepted
at the Cane Creek MM, Orange County, NC May 27, 1758. They had a son William-

William BALDWIN was the third husband of Mary Ann BEALS daughter of John and
Sarah [Bowater] Beals of Aston Township, Chester County, PA born about 1722.
Jean was probably an earlier wife of William Baldwin.
BLAKELY
CHARLES BLAKELY born about 1736 in Ireland , died after Oct. 17, 1816 in Knox
County, TN, married MARGARET DAVIS and they had eleven children all born
Montgomery or Smyth County, VA, very near Frederick County, VA, six of whom are
of interest to us they are Alexander, Jesse, Agnes, Mary, Charles and a daughter
whose first name is unknown. ALEXANDER BLAKELY son of Charles and Margaret
[Davis] Blakely born Apr. 5, 1773, married Knox County, TN Nov. 18, 1799 SARAH
LEAKY born Nov. 26, 1781 daughter of William(born about 1763 Orange County, NC)
and Elizabeth [Scott] Leaky. Sarah was a niece of LEVI LEAKY who married
SUSSANAH ROUTH. Sarah appeared in the Paw Paw Hollow Church records when Sarah
Blakely was received by experience in March of 1803 possibly along with one of
her Leaky relatives. Alexander Blacklye and his wife Sarah were dismissed "by
letter" in Oct. 1807. Were they part of "the Moon Colony" who went to Ohio about
this time? Sarah's sister, REBECCA LEAKY, married Knox County, TN Jan. 5, 1801
JOHN ADAMSON son of Jesse T. and Mary [Wells] Adamson born 1780. They had
children John ADAMSON born about 1803 and Charlotte ADAMSON born about 1804 and
both of these children were placed under the guardianship of William LEAKY (Sr)
in Knox County, TN in July 1807. John's father was a brother of SIMON ADAMSON

Blakely born Dec. 25, 1777, married POLLY KERNS, was received into the Paw Paw
Hollow Baptist Church by experience in February 1803 AGNES BLAKELY daughter of
Charles and Margaret [Davis] Blakely born about 1779, married before 1799
probably in Knox County, TN WILLIAM DODD son of Josiah and Mary [Luttrell] Dodd
born Amherst County, VA 1740. There was a William DODD on the Chester County, PA
Tax List 1722 living Aston Township who may have been related. William DODD was
surety at marriage of Alexander BLAKELY. William and Agnes had among their
children daughters Sarah and Anna- SARAH DODD married Jefferson County, TN Mar.
9, 1826 SOLOMON RUTH who is as yet unidentified. ANNA DODD born Knox County, TN,
died before 1846 in Morgan County, IL, married Jefferson County, TN Feb. 20, 1821
ROBERT COVEY who was the brother of RUTH COVEY who married JACOB ADAMSON (son of
Simon and Eleanor [ROUTH] Adamson), JOSHUA COVEY who married LYDIA ADAMSON
(sister of Jacob Adamson), and MARTHA COVEY whose first husband was DANIEL
BARRENGER (parents of Catherine Barrenger who married JONATHAN ROUTH born 1800).
MARY BLAKELY daughter of Charles and Margaret [Davis] Blakely born 1781, married
according to Internet files and probably in Knox County, TN JAMES ROUTH. It has
been reported on the Internet that Mary married ISAAC ROUTH (1772), but there was
no documentation given for either marriage. James has not yet been identified.
CHARLES BLAKELY son of Charles and Margaret [Davis] Blakely born 1785, died
before Oct. 3, 1825, married Knox County, TN Nov. 27, 1815 POLLY ROUTH who is as
yet unidentified. DAUGHTER BLAKELY daughter of Charles and Margaret [Davis]
Blakely born about 1784, married JOSEPH ADAMSON son of Jesse T. Adamson. On July
2, 1787 Joseph was accepted into membership at Deep River
MM, Guilford County, NC along with his brother John (married to Rebecca Leaky
above) on their father's request. They moved to Lost Creek MM, Jefferson County,
TN in 1797. Joseph was disowned for marrying out of unity on Jan. 31, 1807.
On Oct. 3, 1815 he married as a second wife his cousin Alice or Alcy ADAMSON.
Jesse T. Adamson was a son of Simon Adamson Sr and Alcy Adamson was a daughter of
Thomas "Byrd" Adamson and Rachel [Williams] Adamson. Thomas was a son of Simon
Adamson Sr. Note: It seems more than coincidence that in the records associated
with the Blakely family there are three unidentified individuals named ROUTH.
Solomon, Polly and James who may all be part of one family. There are also a
William ROUTH and a Samuel ROUTH in this area and unidentified.
HAMMER
ABRAHAM HAMMER son of John or Johannes Hammer (born about 1683 Palatinate,
Germany) and Jane ____ (born 1689 in Wales, Great Britain) was born Plymouth Twp,
Philadelphia County, PA 1731, married Rachel ____ (another Internet source says
she was Rachel Meeting) born Bucks County, PA 1731. They seemed to be Quakers.
They had son Isaac HAMMER born Guilford County, NC but successive children in
this family were born Randolph County, NC. Abraham HAMMER signed the 1785
Petition in Randolph County to have the Court moved. He was in the southern part
of the county and clustered in a group comprised of Isaac REDFERN, Jacob ROUTH,
Joseph ROUTH, and Edward ROUTH. Joseph Routh was said to be the son of Edward
Routh and a woman named HAMMER. In 1754 Edward and wife named Deborah sold
property in Frederick County, VA, so she was probably Deborah HAMMER. Abraham and
Rachel had among their children Isaac and Mary who are of interest in our
research- ISAAC HAMMER son of Abraham and Rachel [____] Hammer born Nov. 20, 1764

MARY HAMMER daughter of Abraham and Rachel [____] Hammer born Randolph County, NC
July 31, 1768, married JOHN N. ADAMSON son of Simon Adamson Sr born Dec. 9, 1767
Cane Creek MM, Orange County, NC records. John was a brother of Simon Adamson
Jr who married Eleanor ROUTH daughter of Jacob ROUTH. Mary Adamson (formerly
Hammer) was dismissed from the Cane Creek MM, Orange County, NC for "marrying out
of unity" on Oct. 7, 1786. It must be noted that Mary was reinstated as she was
given a certificate to Lost Creek MM in Jefferson County, TN in 1806. This
certainly suggests that Mary was a Quaker before she married John ADAMSON who no
longer was a Quaker in good standing.
MILLS JOHN MILLS Sr son of John and Sarah [Harrold] Mills was born Philadelphia,
PA Jan. 29, 1686, married Chester County, PA Rachel BATES. John MILLS was on the
Chester County, PA Tax Lists from 1718-1726 in West Nottingham Township. They
evidently moved to Maryland for a period of time as John was said to be "of
Prince George County, MD" when he received a patent in 1734 and had a large tract
of land surveyed on Mill Creek, a branch of the Opekan River in Frederick County,

County, VA 1724 married ANNE MENDENHALL daughter of John and Martha [Wright]
Mendenhall. John Mendenhall was a brother of Mordecai Mendenhall who married
Charity Beeson and had daughter Charity MENDENHALL who married Aaron MILLS. James
and brother Jacob MOON jointly owned 675 acres of land in Tract 178 Frederick
County, VA known as "Hobson's Grant". On this same tract were Walter THORNBURGH,
Thomas THORNBURGH and wife Sarah Mary [Hannah] Thornburgh and Thomas BROWN
husband of Hannah MOON above.
JACOB MOON son of Simon and Laureytha [Humphrey] Moon born Frederick County, VA
about 1732, died Arden, Berkly County, WV 1804, married Frederick County, VA
about 1760 JANE REES/REECE daughter of Thomas and Margaret [Bowen] Rees,
neighbors living on Tract 37. Thomas Rees' family was from Nottingham Township,
Chester County, PA. The information in PIONEERS OF OLD FREDERICK COUNTY, VIRGINIA
by Cecil O'Dell indicates that there had been earlier marriages between the Bowen
and Moon families. Jane mentioned in father's 1776 Will as Jane MOON. When
Jane's brother, Henry, was married, Jacob MOON was a witness as was Benjamin
THORNBURGH and members of the Bowen and Rees families. On Nov. 18, 1752 Jacob
MOON and his brother James MOON received 675 acres of land in Tract 178 "The
Hobson Grant". JOHN MOON born Aug. 4, 1717 only son of James or Jasper MOON, by
his second wife Agnes [Priestly], married 1735/5 MARY FARMER.(Farmer families in
Chester County, PA). John granted Certificate by Falls MM in Bucks County, PA to
Opechon or Opeckan MM in Frederick County, VA in 1741. The Opeckan MM meeting
was renamed and became the Hopewell MM. On Sept 24, 1749 the Hopewell MM records
indicate a "James" Moon granted a certificate to NC (Cane Creek MM). John and
Mary lived in the southern part of Randolph County, NC very close to Jacob and
Joseph ROUTH. When he moved to East Tennessee his Certificate addressed to New
Hope MM was presented to Lost Creek MM Jefferson County, TN instead, and accepted
there. They had a son Joseph- JOSEPH MOON son of John and Mary [Farmer] Moon was
born Deep River, Randolph County Mar. 20, 1750, died Martinsville, Clinton
County, OH Apr. 14, 1833 AE 83, buried Newberry (MM)Cemetery, married NC Apr. 13,
1772 Ann BROWN. He lived in the southern part of Randolph County, NC and
appeared on Tax lists and other records near Isaac REDFERN, Jacob and Joseph
ROUTH. He like Joseph ROUTH refused to take an oath of Allegiance and Joseph MOON
further refused to provide an inventory. Joseph Routh taxed twofold and Joseph
Moon was taxed threefold. He had among his large family children Samuel, Jane
and Henry Moon- SAMUEL MOON son of Joseph and Ann [Brown] Moon born Randolph
County, NC Apr. 4, 1781, died Clinton County, OH Mar. 25, 1846. Beers says Samuel
born April 17, 1781 and Martha born March 5, 1781 married MARTHA ROUTH daughter
of Joseph and Mary [Redfern] Routh. They moved to Tennessee and then to Ohio in
the Spring of 1809. After marrying Martha, Samuel never appeared in the Quaker
records again, but his siblings remained staunch Quakers. JANE MOON daughter of
Joseph and Ann [Brown] Moon born about 1785, died Clinton County, OH 1855,
married Jefferson County, TN Oct. 6, 1806 JOHN ROUTH son of Joseph Routh, they
moved to Ohio in the Spring of 1809. John was a Deacon in the Baptist church.
HENRY MOON son of Joseph and Ann [Brown] Moon born Nov. 29, 1790 ( The Birth date
for Henry and Sarah plus names and dates for children in the Newberry MM
Records), died Jun. 25, 1859, married SARAH MILLS daughter of Joseph and Hannah
[Maris] Mills born Deep River, Guilford County, NC Jan. 1, 1792, moved to Ohio.
SANDERS / SAUNDERS The will of JOHN SANDERS was written August 18, 1751 and
presented to the October Court in Chowan County, NC in 1751. John Sanders leaves
to Sons: Francis "the plantation I now live on"; John "plantation on Cypress
Swamp where Thomas Rutter lives"; Robert, Jesse, Thomas to each of above named
sons is bequeathed Negroes. Daughters: Mille, Ferbie and Elizabeth Sanders. Wife
and Executrix: Mary. Witnesses: John Loe (or Loce), Jr, John Loe (or Loce), Sr.,
JACOB RUTH. Clerk of the Court: James Craven. This information introduced a man
named Jacob Ruth/Routh born by 1730, assuming he was of legal age, 21, at time he
was witness to this document, who is older than the "supposed age" of either of
the two Jacobs in Randolph County, NC. Several of the people named in this will
trace back to Chester County, PA area. On 6,11,1693 a John Sanders of
Philadelphia, PA married Elizabeth Wood of Philadelphia, PA at the house of
Arthur Cooke in Philadelphia. Philadelphia MM records. On 3,31,1695 Sarah Sanders
had license to marry John Wood. There are other early Sanders records in these
records. A John Saunders Jr. of an age to be the son of the man who wrote that
will, received 200 acres of land "near George Hobson"in Frederick County, VA in
1762 in the Will of William Dillon. (Members of the Dillon family moved to
Guilford County, NC and then to Jefferson County, TN)
"SAUNDERS, PAUL was one of the earliest immigrants who settled on the west side
of the Schuylkill opposite Philadelphia. His marriage which is the first
registered in the Haverford Monthly Meeting Records, was accomplished 6th mo.
24th 1684, at the house of Thomas Duckett, which stood a little above the
Permanent bridge, and at which Friends Meetings were then regularly held. Edith
Hand to whom he was married, was the servant girl of John Moon; and before the
marriage was allowed to proceed, a meeting committee was appointed to inquire if
John Moon had been satisfied for the services of the young lady. Paul soon
acquired a high standing in public estimation, as well as in that of the Society,
and his bride by her prudence and intelligence, proved herself worthy of his
choice. In 1690 he was a representative from Philadelphia in the Provincial
Assembly, and was frequently charged with other important public appointments.
Edith died in 1698 and in 1701, Paul removed to Chester where he carried on the
Tanning business for some years, but previous to his death, which happened in
1716, he removed to Philadelphia. So far as is known he had but two children,

DISCOVERY OF THE TERRITORY INCLUDED WITHIN ITS LIMITS TO THE PRESENT TIME, 1862,
Written under the Direction and Appointment of the Delaware County Institute of
Science by George Smith, MD, page 499 A Paul Saunders married Anne Folk 4, 30,
1699 in the Philadelphia MM records. No definite relationship between Paul and
the John Sanders who wrote the will has yet to be proved. According to Internet
files the Sanders family in Perquimans and /or Chowan County, NC had been in
Nansemond County, VA before living in the Perquimans area. The proximity of
Nansemond County, VA to Perquimans and Chowan Counties, NC, the use of the
female name FEREBY, and the fact that some members of the Nansemond Sanders
family were known to be Quakers with descendants or relatives who were among the
first members of Deep River MM in Guilford County, NC in 1778 and in Randolph
County, NC records all suggest that this John may have been part of the family of
William and Mary [Hall] Sanders of Nansemond County, VA and Perquimans County,
NC. The name LOE and LOW appeared in the records of Chester County, PA. A JOHN
LOW was in Chester Township on the 1722 Tax List. A Hugh LOE was on the same
1722 Tax list in Lower and Upper Chichester Township along with FRANCIS ROUTH.
(Jr). And here is the BIG RECORD! Both John LOWE SR and John LOWE JR are on the
1779 Tax List of Randolph County, NC. John Lowe Sr is two names away from Jacob
ROUTH of Sandy Creek and his brother-in-law Edmond YORK. John LOWE Jr is on the
list with those who refused to take an Oath of Allegience and refused to submit
an inventory and were taxed fourfold. A notation indicates that he relented and
took the Oath. By 1788 there is only one man named John LOWE and he lives very
near Jacob Routh of Sandy Creek along with Nathan LOW and Abner LOE. What are the
chances that all three of the witnesses on the Sander's Will would show up
together again in another area by accident? Thomas RUTTER appeared in the same
Falls MM, Bucks County, PA records as did members of the SANDERS family and in
the Philadelphia MM records along with JAMES ROUTH, son of FRANCIS ROUTH JR.
Unfortunately there is a huge conflict between the data in the Will and the
structure of the Sanders family in Internet files. Dates do not agree and the
data has too many conflicts to easily sort out. Contact with a Sanders researcher
revealed that they are having the same problem sorting out the Sanders as we are
having sorting out the Rouths. JOHN SANDERS probably a son of William and Mary
[Hall] Sanders born about 1690 in Nansemond County, VA,(maybe 20 miles north of
Chowan County, NC) died Chowan County, NC before August 18, 1751 when his Will
was proved, married 1.Mar. 18, 1714/15 PRISCILLA PRITLOW and was listed with
children Judith Sanders, Priscilla Sanders and Joel Sanders who was born 1728,
none of whom are named in the will. Since the widow in the Will is named as
Mary, the remaining children listed in the will could be the children of John by
a second wife named MARY or not! There may be another man named John. JOEL
SANDERS son of John and Priscilla [Pritlow] Sanders born Nansemond County, VA
1728, married before 1746 CHARITY HOLLOWELL and had 13 children, one of whom was
called FERRIBE SANDERS. This man was said to be a staunch Quaker and was a
member of the Nansemond MM which granted Joel a certificate to the Cane Creek
MM. They were accepted at Cane Creek MM, Orange County, NC in 1762.The Sanders
family appeared in the Quaker records along with Thornburgh, and Mills, when
Hezakiah Sanders, Joel Sanders, John Sanders and John Sanders Jr, Martha Sanders
and Susannah Sanders all were listed. as original members of the Deep River MM in
Guilford County, NC 1778. Hezekiah (born 1734) married Martha E, Johnson.
Hezakiah's relationship to Joel is uncertain. JOHN SAUNDERS JR- According to
Pioneers of Old Frederick County by Cecil O'Dell William DILLON received a grant
of 400 acres of land in Frederick County, VA on Nov. 15, 1752. It was located
between George Hobson's and Alexander Ross's land about two miles east of
Whitehall. Two hundred acres were to be conveyed to John SAUNDERS Jr. and the
other 200 acres to be sold as directed in his 1762 will. The north boundary of
the land is Back Creek. And it is just south of the MILLS tract.
While the Internet did not reveal any connection between John SAUNDERS and
William DILLON, this certainly sounds like a bequest and John may have been
married to a Dillon daughter. William DILLON (a Quaker) was the son of Luke and
Susannah [Garrett] Dillon born about 1715 in Bucks County, PA, he married 1742 in
Frederick County, VA Mary REECE. His daughter, Ann DILLON, married Richard
HAYWORTH and she and several of William's brothers moved first to Guilford
County, NC then to Jefferson County, TN and from there to Clinton County, Ohio
following the exact migration route of so many of these Quaker families and
specifically that of the Moon family even seeming to be part of the Moon Colony
in Clinton County, OH. Another Dillon daughter married Robert BLAKELY and moved
Guilford County, NC to Tennessee. The Dillon and Rees families had several
intermarriages. Jacob MOON's wife was Jane REES daughter of Thomas and Margaret
[Bowen] Rees and her father was from Nottingham Township, Chester County, PA.
Members of the Rees/Reece family also moved to North Carolina and then into
Tennessee then to Ohio. There is still no explanation for the presence of a man
named JACOB ROUTH as witness to the Will. This Jacob Routh, if aged 21 this
date, was born about 1730.
SIMCOCK The family of FRANCIS ROUTH JR's wife SARAH SIMCOCK may hold a clue for
our research. Since Jacob had not seemed to be a name in the ROUTH family in
what few early records we have, it was probably introduced through a marriage to
a woman who did have Jacob as a family name. Sarah Simcock wife of Francis Routh
Jr was the probably the daughter of Jacob Simcock, and the John Beals associated
with LAWRENCE ROUTH was said to be named JOHN JACOB BEALS. Small clues, but all
we have! JACOB SIMCOCK son of the immigrant ancestor John and Elizabeth [budd]
Simcock was born Jan. 6, 1657/8 Stoke, Acton, Cheshire, England, died according
to his Biography in History of Delaware Co. Pg 502 about the year 1716, married
Chester MM, Chester County, PA Jan. 15, 1684/5 ALICE MARIS daughter of George and
Alice [Wilsmith] Maris born Oct. 16, 1660 in England, died 1726. He was said to
be a Minister and Deputy Register General under James Claypoole in 1686. He was
the Chester County, PA coroner in 1691. His children were all born in Ridley
Township, Chester County, PA. His father, JOHN SIMCOCK, had given Ridley Township
that name after their home in England. John was an acknowledge leader in
political and religious matters in Chester County. Jacob and Alice [Maris]
Simcock had sons named John, Jacob Jr and Benjamin - All three men married
daughters of Nicholas Waln, John married Mary Waln, Jacob Jr married Sarah Waln
and Benjamin married Hannah Waln. Both Jacob Jr and Benjamin had a daughter
named Sarah Simcock born about 1715. The Internet files claim Benjamin as the
father of SARAH SIMCOCK, wife of FRANCIS ROUTH JR. The conflict is unresolved,
the Simcock records on the Internet are contradictory on many counts and while
Jacob Jr seems the more likely father for Sarah, Benjamin is also listed.- JACOB
SIMCOCK JR son of Jacob and Alice [Maris] Simcock born Ridley Township, Chester
County, PA Sept. 25, 1686, died 1737 in Abington MM, Philadelphia, PA(Internet
also says he died 1717 but that's when Delaware County History says his father
Jacob died, Internet gave the 1737 date to Jacob SR), married Philadelphia MM,
Philadelphia, PA Apr. 25, 1711 SARAH WALN daughter of Nicholas and Jane [Turner]
Waln born Jun. 9, 1692 (second marriage for Sarah at only age 19?) , and had
children Joseph, Sarah and John (No birth dates). The Internet file says his
daughter Sarah Simcock married Wm Megill and gives the Falls MM records as a
source. Those records say "1735/6, 12,11 Sarah [Simcock], Bucks Co., m Wm.
Megill, Bucks Co., at Falls MH" The record does not specify the father but it
does specify the residence. With March as the first month the date is February
11, 1736. Jacob Simcock Jr was on the Tax list in his home town of Ridley and is
said to have died there. The Philadelphia MM suggest that after their marriage in
1711 Jacob and Sarah may have lived in Philadelphia until 1721 when Sarah
requested a certificate to return to the Chester MM in Chester County, PA.
BENJAMIN SIMCOCK son of Jacob and Alice [Maris] Simcock born Ridley Township,
Chester County, PA Nov. 10, 1690, said in Internet file to have married HANNAH
WALN daughter of Nicholas and Jane [Turner] Waln born Bucks County, PA Nov. 21,
1684. There was no date for a marriage and only the one child, Sarah, in this
file. His name was on the 1822 Tax List of Chester County, PA, Ridley Rate as
"Doct. Ben Sincock and land in trust........£43". The meaning is not entirely
clear except that Benjamin was evidently a doctor. Was Benjamin Simcock's land
in trust, maybe as an estate? Or was he paying tax on his own land plus other
land he was holding in trust for someone else? The records usually gave names of
both the owner and the man paying for him. Neither of the Jacobs were on the
Ridley list in this year. A John Waln was on the Ridley list paying £33.
The source given in the "Revisited file" for the children of Francis Routh Jr and
Sarah Simcock is the IGI. I think they missed one! Francis and Sarah may well
have named a child after Sarah's father or grandfather and had a son named JACOB
ROUTH. No proof but this is the first time a man named Jacob has appeared in the
records in connection with the early Routh family. Note too that there is an
exact date for the marriage and the birth of the first child of Francis and
Sarah[Simcock] ROUTH. Hannah Routh was born Oct. 15, 1736, after that time the
dates of birth seem to be estimates. A son could have been born between 1737 and
1750.
STOUT SARAH SLOAT was probably SARAH STOUT When the name Stout appears in a
record written in script it most often has a single horizontal line to cross both
"T's". Not hard to imagine a horizontal line starting a little after the first T
and a "u" that was closed enough to be mistaken for an "a" . In all the records
searched in East Tennessee and North Carolina the name SLOAT has never appeared
outside of the one record found in MARRIAGES OF JEFFERSON COUNTY, TENNESSEE
1792-1836 Compiled by Edythe Rucker Whitley, in which the name was read as
SLOAT. In EARLY EAST TENNESSEE MARRIAGES by Byron and Barbara Sistler,
Nashville 1987 the identical record is read as STOUT. Considering the
intermarriages with allied families, the presence of the Stout family in Randolph
County, NC, and the migration patterns that suggest members of the Stout family,
if they did not actually travel with the Moon and Routh families, they did meet
them in Tennessee and Ohio. Isaac ROUTH born Randolph County 1782 married a
STOUT. ISAAC STOUT son of Samuel STOUT and Rachel CHANEY or CHANCEY born Randolph
County, NC 14 April 1768, died 21 March 1853 in Clinton County, OH, married 3
Nov. 1792 SUSANNAH HOBSON (Cane Creek MM records say he married out of unity 11,
3, 1792) Isaac was a member of the Cane Creek MM in NC and both of them were
members of Lost Creek MM in Jefferson County, TN. Susannah HOBSON was the
daughter of Charles and Sarah [Beck] Hobson born Chatham County, NC and she
traced her lineage directly from the Capt. George Hobson Family of Frederick
County, VA from whom the Moons, Thornburghs and Browns purchased land in Tract
178 in Frederick County, VA in 1752. They lived many years together as
neighbors. The Hobson family moved with the Browns, Moons, Thornburghs, Mills,
Beals and other families into North Carolina and are found in Cane Creek MM, NC
records. A George HOBSON was on the 1779 Tax List of Randolph County, NC along
with a Jeffery BECK, and in the 1799 Tax List Samuel STOUT and John STOUT, Henry
STOUT and Charles STOUT lived not far from Jacob ROUTH of Sandy Creek.. They were
all brothers and sons of Peter and Margaret [Cypert] Stout. On the 1788 Petition
for the location of the Courthouse the following signed from the northern part of
Randolph County near Jacob ROUTH of Sandy Creek- Samuel STOUT, Peter STOUT,
Michael and Jeffry BECK and John CHANEY, all names connected in some way with
Isaac Stout. Isaac and Susannah [Hobson] STOUT had a daughter-
SARAH STOUT born 1792. And while this would make Sarah only 15 at time of a
marriage to Isaac ROUTH, it is probably correct. Now that we know Isaac was
born 1782 and not 1775 it reduces the gap between them to a plausible ten years.
Their families were probably neighbors in Randolph County, NC. A number of
individuals in the Stout family married members of the Moon and Thornburgh
families in NC. They all ended up in Lost Creek MM, Jefferson County, TN where
Susannah STOUT was received by request 4, 21, 1798 and On 8,18,1798 Jesse, Sarah
and Rachel were received by request of their father, Isaac STOUT. In the Lost
Creek MM records, On 7, 25, 1807, Isaac was left at liberty to remove to Ohio.
On 10, 31, 1807 Isaac & family were granted a certificate to Miami MM in the
Miami Valley of Ohio. On that same date Susannah & daughters Sarah, Phebe,
Rebekah, Lydia and Matilda were also granted certificate to Miami MM.. They were
evidently part of "The Moon Colony" and moved to Clinton County, Ohio which would
certainly explain why Isaac ROUTH moved to Butler County, OH about the same time
that the Stout family did. If this is the Sarah STOUT who married Jefferson
County, TN 4, 20, 1807 ISAAC ROUTH, then at the time the Certificate was granted
she was still being included with her family in Quaker records. Possibly easier
than reporting a marriage out of unity at the time when the family was in the
process of relocation and obtaining approval from the Quaker Meeting. The
Internet files also say Sarah married an Ephraim Stout in Clinton County, Ohio in
1822. That needs more research.
ANN STOUT daughter of Peter and Charity [Barns] Stout. Peter was the son of
Charles and Mary [Noblett] Stout. Charles in turn was the son of Peter and
Margaret [Cypert] Stout and brother of Henry, Samuel, Peter and Joseph Stout, all
of whom were residents of Randolph County, and neighbors of the Routh family.
ANN STOUT married JEREMIAH ROUTH son of Joseph and Mary [Redfern] Routh PETER
STOUT son of Peter and Margaret [Cypert] Stout born York, PA June 9, 1754 married
Orange County, NC Dec. 3, 1773 Hannah BROWN born Orange County, NC June 5, 1756
daughter of William and Hannah [MOON] Brown. Hannah MOON was a daughter of SIMON
MOON (brother of John Moon of Randolph County, NC) of Frederick County, VA, her
sister Rachel BROWN married Joseph THORNBURGH. JOHN STOUT - THE HISTORY OF
CLINTON COUNTY, OHIO, pg 570- James Moon reminisced that , "John Stout and John
Hobson had arrived Clinton County about 1804". John STOUT was the son of Charles
and Mary [Noblett] Stout born Orange County, NC Dec. 5, 1767, died Clinton
County, OH Feb. 26, 1836, married Chatham County, NC Oct. 3, 1789 Ann HOBSON
daughter of Stephen and Ann [Barnes] Hobson born Chatham County, NC Jul. 11,
1769, died Clinton County, OH Sept. 3, 1834. He was an uncle of Ann STOUT who
married Jeremiah ROUTH son of Joseph and Mary [Redfern] Routh, and a cousin of
Sarah STOUT who married Isaac ROUTH son of Jacob ROUTH, but which Jacob?. John
Hobson was an uncle of Susannah [Hobson] . John HOBSON was the brother of
Charles HOBSON. They were joined by members of the Beals, Mills, Hammer, Leaky,
Thornburgh and Routh families from Randolph County, NC.
THORNBURGH Brothers Thomas, Edward and Walter Thornburgh, sons of Robert and
Sarah [Jackson] Thornburgh emigrated to this country from Cootehill, Ireland in
the early 1700's. One source says they settled first in Haddonfield, NJ (where
the Adamsons first lived). They are found in Lancaster County, PA, then in
Frederick County, VA in 1740. They were present in Guilford and Randolph
Counties, NC and moved into East Tennessee with the Routh and Adamson families.
At least one member of the family moved to Ray County, MO and then to Easton,
Leavenworth County, KS with the Adamsons. On Tract 178, Frederick County, VA

BROWN Jr 1056 acres George HOBSON had several very lage tracts of land surveyed
in 1734/1735. Tract 178 was part of that land. Hobson sold 1,056 to a David
Logan who in turn sold it to Thomas, Joseph and Samuel (Jr) BROWN. The acreage
acquired by the Moon brothers and the Thornburgh's was also part of the "Hobson
Tract". The remaining 1500 acres in Tract 178 were occupied by the George HOBSON
Family, also Quakers and part of the large 1733 Quaker migration from Chester
County, PA. WALTER THORNBURGH has been identified as Walter Jr who had a wife
Margaret BEESON and was the father of Henry THORNBURGH. THOMAS THORNBURGH was a
son Robert and Sarah [Jackson] THORNBURGH. Thomas married Cootahill, Ire. Sept.
12, 1713 Sarah Mary HANNAH and their daughter- HANNAH THORNBURGH married Hopewell
MM, Frederick County, VA Jan. 18, 1740 Henry MILLS and lived in Frederick
County, VA with the Mills family on tract number 38, THOMAS BROWN was the son of
Thomas and Ruth [Large] BROWN and the husband of Margaret MOON daughter of Simon
and Laureytha [Humphrey] MOON. Thomas had a brother named Samuel BROWN. JAMES
MOON and JACOB MOON were sons of Simon MOON and brothers of Margaret [Moon] BROWN
and Rachel [Moon] THORNBURGH.
HENRY THORNBURGH son of Walter and Margaret [Beeson] Thornburgh was born about
1732 Hopewell MM, Frederick County, VA, died Jefferson County, TN Apr. 24, 1804,
married New Garden MM, Guilford County, NC Dec. 7, 1758 RACHEL MOON daughter of
Simon and Laureytha [Humphry] Moon born according to Deep River MM records Jan.
10, 1734. Simon MOON was born Bucks County, PA Apr. 11, 1700, died Frederick
County, VA. It was the New Garden MM, NC records that stated Henry was a son of
Walter Thornburgh. Present at their marriage in NC were Walter Thornburgh,
Thomas Brown, Richard Moon(another son of Simon), Samuel Brown, Margaret
Thornburgh, Margaret Brown. So most of these people on tract 178 moved together
from Virginia into North Carolina. Henry and Rachel [Moon] THORNBURGH moved from
North Carolina to Jefferson County, TN where they were chosen Elders in the newly
formed Lost Creek MM in 1797 along with John and Sarah MILLS "earliest settler"
who arrived in 1784. Henry and Rachel [Moon] Thornburgh's daughter- ANN
THORNBURGH born May 15, 1772 , married Mar 3, 1791 John BEALS/BALES son of
William and Rachel [Green] Bales. RICHARD MOON above was a son of Simon and the
brother of James Moon, Jacob Moon, Margaret [Moon] Brown and Rachel [Moon]
Thornburgh. Richard was married to Sussanah BROWN daughter of Thomas. Three Moon
siblings married three Brown siblings. ROSANNAH ROUTH daughter of John and
Elizabeth [Mashman] Routh born May 1, 1811 married Jefferson County, TN Nov. 11,
1825 WILLIAM THORNBURGH. William may have been the son of Walter and Mary
[Baldwin] Thornburgh born Oct. 3, 1794, and a grandson of Henry and Rachel [Moon]
Thornburgh.
WHITAKER JANE RUTH married Rowan County, NC July 28, 1762 JOHN BIBBY ( From
preface of "Joseph Routh Family" by Tom Turpin and source given as Rowan County,
NC Marriage Bonds) additional information indicates Mark Whitaker, Joshua
Whitaker were bondsmen WILLIAM WHITAKER born Grundleton, England 1704, died Rowan
County, NC 1789. He had among his 11 children, sons Mark and Joshua- MARK
WHITAKER born Kennett Square, Chester County, PA 1726 and married 1. Anne ____
and 2. 1767 in Rowan County, NC Tabitha ____. JOSHUA WHITAKER born Bradford,
Chester County, PA Jan. 22, 1734/5. Mark and Joshua were bondsmen at the
marriage of JANE ROUTH. Bondsmen were frequently relatives or very close family
friends of either the Bride or the Groom. Mark and Joshua WHITAKER were on the
same 1759 Rowan County Tax List that showed Jeremiah ROUTH and Zaccheus ROUTH.
They lived in a portion of Rowan County that became Davidson County. The
migration pattern for these men leads back to the Quaker Community in Chester
County, PA where there is a man named Whitaker on the Tax Lists where Rouths and
Allied families are found in 1693, 1715, 1722, and 1768. The Kennett Township,
Chester County, PA Tax Lists were not specifically checked This strongly
suggests that- JANE ROUTH came from Chester County, VA too. Francis ROUTH Jr had
a daughter named Jane. She is listed in the "Revisited" file as being born about
1748. Her birth date is a "best guess" by someone. My guess is that she was
born a few years earlier and is the woman in the Rowan County, NC marriage
record. The Whitaker family had been Quakers but once in NC they like many of
the migrating Quakers, became Baptists.

Frederick County, VA established 1736 records before 1736 in Nottingham (MD)
Records. Records between 1735 and 1759 destroyed by fire. Providence, Fairfax and
Cold Spring also in Nottingham records. New Garden MM in Guilford County, North
Carolina set up in 1754 Cane Creek established 1751 located Orange (now Alamance)
County, NC included Guilford, Randolph and Chatham Counties from Perquimans and
Little River QM Deep River in Guilford County, NC established 1778 from New
Garden MM (NC) New Hope (and Lost Creek) in Greene County, TN established 1795
from New Garden (NC) Lost Creek MM New Market, Jefferson County, TN established
1797 attached to New Garden QM in NC until 1803.
