Oak Family DNA Project

Oak Family DNA Results Page

To actually participate, you must me a male with the Oak (or variant) surname as the Y-chromosome necessary to perform this test is only present in the male and is passed directly from father to sons and grandsons. If you choose not to test, or you are ineligible, you may want to encourage or perhaps even sponsor a cousin or an uncle that does carry the surname. I am female so I am ineligible. My father was tested on my behalf as he carries the surname.

There are 4 types of tests we are using for this project--

The 12-marker (Y-12) test costs $99 + $2 postage

The 25-marker (Y-25) test costs $148 + $2 postage

The 37-marker (Y-37) test costs $189 + $2 postage

The 67-marker (Y-67)test costs $269 + $2 postage.

The kit is mailed to your home. It is a cheek-swab kit. I am encouraging testing on (at minimum) the 25-marker test as our families may have a common DNA pattern that does not enable us to see the distinctions between families when using the 12-marker test. Obviously, the tests with a greater number of markers are more expensive, and if the cost keeps someone from testing, the 12-marker test is better than no test at all.

Here are the current participants

It is my goal to get about 2 or 3 participants from each of the major lines so we can determine which lines are really connected. The DNA test will definitively answer that question.

If you would like to test to determine heritage, scroll through the tests and find the proper one for you. Some are female or male specific tests. Joining through the group will give you the group discount rate and save you some money, so I'd encourage you to do it that way even though you won't be part of our current project.

If you know of others who might be interested in participating, please let them know about this site. If you would like to donate money to sponsor someone who cannot afford to take the test, please click the donate button. 100% of money collected will go toward testing for the Oak DNA project.

If you would like to participate but cannot afford to, please contact the group administrator and you name will be placed on a confidential list and will be matched up to sponsorships as they become available.
