The Duncans or Dunkans come to America The first actual settlement of the Scotch-Irish in North Carolina was not in the Piedmont, but in the Tidewater region, and they arrived by sea rather than by way of Pennsylvania. On November 29, 1735, Governor Johnston informed his Council that Arthur Dobbs (later to become governor of the province), "and some other gentlemen of distinction in Ireland," and Mr. Henry McCulloch, a merchant of London (later agent for Lord Granville) had written him "respecting their intention of sending over to this province several poor Protestant families with design of raising flax and hemp." They asked for a grant of 60,000 acres of land in New Hanover County. Their request was granted and in the next year (1736) the settlers arrived at their land on the Black River (now Duplin County), where they organized themselves into two congregations, Goshen and the Grove. Martha Ann was born 10 October 1836 in Alabama and died 28 November 1910. Martha Ann was baptized by the Reverend Jessie CRAWFORD on 6 September 1853 at Silver Creek Baptist Chuch according to the record of Henry L. SPENCE and James and Martha Ann are buried along with her sister, Sarah Jane WALKER, at the Isaac DUNCAN Cemetery in Salem, Mississippi. James Pinkney DUNCAN can be found in the 1850, 1860 and 1870 Pike County, Mississippi Census Records. In 1850 he is listed as being a 44 year old farmer born in North Carolina, living with his wife Winny, age 37 and also of North Carolina. Children in the house are the oldest 13 children, all born in Mississippi. His Real Estate was valued at $450.00. See History section of this page for a complete copy of the 1850 Census. On 30 June 1860, James is listed as only 34, however he was born 6 October 1805, with his wife Martha, age 23, born in Alabama. The children at home were John, listed as James W., Needham, Hugh, Charlotte, Mary and Maranda, listed as Elizabeth. This must be an error as the child is listed as being a 1 year old female born in Mississippi and would have to be Maranda Jane. Also in the house is Eliza who had married LeRoy THORNHILL and possiby he had died as Eliza was back at home with a 7 year old daughter listed as "W.T." THORNHILL. In 1870, those in the home are James, listed as 44 years old, again incorrect; Martha A., Charlotte, Maranda, William J, Myra, Sarah E., Charles F., and Joseph P., who would have been 6 months old.
