Notes from
Mike: There are no written records that I have been able
to locate at this time. It is well maintained by the Ballville township
road crew. In fact they do a real good job on all the cemeteries they
are responsible for. This is an old cemetery. The first burial that I can verify is of Justin Frary in 1834 and the last burial took place in 1938 when Margaret E. Fry was buried there. As you might expect a number of the stones reflect the ravages of time and weather and are barely readable. There are a number of markers that have been replaced with family style monuments with 3 or 4 names on the sides with small foot stones with first names or mother and father written on them. There have been at least 3 previous surveys of this cemetery and I used them as a resource to verify and supplement my own reading to the markers. The first was by C. A. Poorman in 1970 as part of a project for the Sandusky County Genealogical Society, "Kin Hunters". There was a follow up survey in 1982 by Grace Luebke, also for the Kin Hunters. They put together a two volume set of there project. I used the information found in "Cemeteries of Sandusky Co., OH. Vol. 1, Ballville - Jackson Townships." revised in 1984. My other source was from Jim Sims who surveyed all of the cemeteries in Sandusky County in the 1970's and produced a 5 volume set titled, "Sandusky County, Ohio, Cemetery Transcriptions". He also wrote short histories of the individual cemeteries. I am continuing to do research on this cemetery and will send along any corrections or new information that I find. |
