| Judge William Lang was a noted historian of Seneca County. Born
Sippersville, Canton of Weinweiler, Germany 2/14/1815. Son of Henry and
Catherine Lang, first of 7 children. Came to Tiffin August 1833. Worked
in the cabinet shop of H Phillips. In Spring of 1840 he began study of
law in the offices of Joshua Seney and later the office of Oliver
Cowdery. Two years later admitted to the bar at Lower Sandusky, now
Fremont. 1844, Lang, a staunch Democrat elected as prosecuting attorney
and two years later reelected. 1851 elected 1st probate judge of the
county by the largest majority ever given a candidate in the county.
Defeated when ran again. 1859 ran and lost Representative to the General
Assembly. 1861 Lang elected to the State Senate. 1863 reelected. 1865 he
was the Democrat nominee for lieutenant governor of the state but was
defeated. 1869 he was elected Treas. of Seneca Cty and reelected 2 years
later. Judge Lang was the 1st Mayor of the City of Tiffin and for many
years a member of the school board. At the Democrat Convention in
Cleveland in 1880 at the age of 65 Lang nominated by acclamation for the
office of Secretary of State but was defeated. David Evan Owen elected Mayor of Tiffin in 1847.He served in the Ohio Senate for 4 years after having served in PA Senate for the Northhampton District for 4 years(1814). He was an Editor and scholar. He came to Seneca Cty with his family in May 1829 and settled on Rocky Creek one mile SE of the city on what is now known as the Huber farm. As at his former home, Mr. Owen was here a leader among men. He was elected county auditor in 1831 being the first Democrat elected to office in Seneca Cty. In 1836 elected to the state senate. President Van Buren appointed David E Owen Receiver of the Public Money for the District of Lands Subject to Sale by Treaty with Wyandot Indians dated 4/26/1836 Later in life he held other offices and also conducted and kept a provision store in this city. He died at the age of 82 years in 1857, his wife, Jerusha Smith Owen, having preceded him eight years. Jerusha's obit states she was buried at Rock Run, but her name and
her husband's are clearly legible on the Lang stone |
