1865-1866 City Directory, Brooklyn, New York

According to the city directory, James Lorenzo Morgan worked at 56 Front Street in Manhattan ("A" on the above map) and lived with his family near the intersection of Gates and Bedford avenues ("B").

Today, the distance between the two points is only 4.5 miles by car, facilitated by the Brooklyn Bridge. But, when the Morgans lived there during the Civil War, it took a lot longer to cross the East River by ferryboat.
