Arthur Pickering, seventh child of William and Susan Pickering (nee Kite), was born on 8 August 1857 at Nelson.

Clara Louisa Ball, eleventh child of William and Catherine Ball (nee Johnson), was born c1857 at Leire, Leicestershire, England. Clara travelled to New Zealand as a baby, arriving at Nelson with her parents and siblings on the Palmyra on 26 March 1858.

Arthur, aged 21, and Clara, aged 22, married on 12 July 1879 at St. Johns, Napier. Arthur's occupation at the time was as a constable.

From 1882 to 1884 Arthur was Officer in Charge of the Clive Police Station and from 1886 to 1893 he was Officer in Charge of the Hastings Police Station, initially as Acting Sergeant and from 1890 as Sergeant. He also acted as Court Clerk. He conducted the first case in the Hastings Courthouse on 12 January 1893, a charge of attempted murder. In March 1893 he was discharged on compensation and took up the licence of the Te Aute Hotel, south of Hastings.

Arthur passed away on 3 October 1933, aged 76, at Palmerston North. Clara passed away on 15 July 1919, aged 62, at Palmerston North.
