John LALLY (father) b. 1826 or 1827 County Galway, Ireland migrated to America on the ship Liverpool on 14 Jul 1846 - during the potato famine/great migration. John was educated and a clerk by trade. Jane M??? (MURRY/MORISSY/MCRURY ??) b. 1835 or 1836, County Tyrone, Ireland migrated with her family probably in the late 1840's. The two married and had two children, Michael David LALLY (1850-1922) and Robert John LALLY (1852- ), both born in New York City.

Their father, John, died and Jane was not able to care for them so she put them in the "Nursery R.I." (Randall's Island) on 21 May 1857. They were then transferred to the Children's Aid Society who on 7 Jan 1862 put them on the "Orphan train". At this time she was living just outside of Greenwich Village at 110 E. 16 Street, NYC, 18th ward and she had visited her sons at least once while they were in the orphanage. I have no further information on Jane. [There is a possibility that she remarried and had other children] There was a John LALLY who declared intention to naturalize in 1851 filed in Rockland County, NY but I do not know if this is our John Lally.

Michael LALLY, aged 11 1/4, went to Anson ALGER of Jefferson, Ashtabula County, Ohio but in March 1862 he was transferred to the home of Alfred MILLS (c1812 - 1884) and Clarissa H. MILLS (c1817 - 1887) of Eagleville, Ohio. Michael became known as Frank Monroe MILLS. There were four other Mills children but it is unknown if they were natural or adopted. Mr. Mills' will lists Ward S. MILLS, son, of Lincoln, Nebraska, and daughters, Sarah C. UDELL (possibly known as Clarissa UDELL) of Jefferson, Ohio (possibly later living in California) and Lucia R. HALL or Rosa L. HALL of Kellogg, Iowa. Evangeline was the fourth of the Mills' children.

Frank MILLS (Michael Lally) married Emma DENISON (of the Stonington, Connecticut Denison line) d/o Jacob Nevin DENISON and Eliza (THOMPSON) DENISON on 2 Jul 1883 in Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska. Their daughter, Maud Rose MILLS was born in Chicago, Illinois on 5/6 Sep 1884 and son, Ray Jay MILLS was born in Geneva, Ohio on 3 Jul 1886. Frank died on 14 Mar 1922 in Cleveland and is buried in Oakdale Cemetery in Jefferson, Ohio along with wife, Emma, daughter, Maud, (never married, no children) and his adoptive parents Alfred and Clarissa. My mother, Patricia, is the daughter of Ray. Ray also had a son, Curtis MILLS, who had no children. Descendants of Frank Mills live primarily in Northeastern Ohio (Cleveland area).

Robert LALLY, aged 9 1/4, was placed with Mr. H.M. HICKOK of Saybrook, Ohio. In June 1869 Mr. Hickok went to Michigan. Mr. Hickok did not keep Robert long after that. Robert officially changed his surname to Mills becoming Robert John MILLS. He married and had a daughter named Lulu MILLS who married a man named Mr. Braeuel. They had a son, Addison BRAEUEL, who married Laura. I do not know if there were other children. Addison and Laura BRAEUEL resided at one time in Painesville, Ohio. Laura receives the credit for sharing her information from the Children's Aid Society in NYC with my mother.

The question remains . . . What is Jane Lally's maiden name.
