FAIRVIEW METHODIST CEMETERY, RENO COUNTY, KANSAS
Fairview Methodist Cemetery is located SW Corner SW 1/4 of Sec. 12�23-8 in Enterprise Township. One can find this plot, which is on the church yard, 8 miles west of the Arkansas River Bridge on old Highway #50 (West Fourth Avenue). At the present time the church and cemetery are active. On 2 January 1879, 100 years ago, the citizens of the area met to select a place for a church and a cemetery. At that time, lots sold for $1.00 each. This small cemetery has 128 marked graves; however, it is known that there are several unmarked graves. (7-2)

HUTCHINSON EASTSIDE CEMETERY, RENO COUNTY, KANSAS

Hutchinson Eastside Cemetery is the oldest Hutchinson cemetery. It is located south of Avenue "D" between Cleveland and Severance Streets. It was established in 1883; however, there are several grave markers with the death dates of 1880. Since the first recorded burials were in 1882, it is believed that the earlier graves were moved from another location. For example, there was a small cemetery in the northwest part of Hutchinson near Monroe Street and between Sixteenth and Seventeenth Avenues. Because some people feared that the cemetery was polluting their drinking water, the graves were moved. It is probable that most of the graves were relocated in Eastside Cemetery. Unfortunately, some of the early records of Eastside Cemetery were burned. Thus there is no record of more than 1,000 unmarked graves. The Eastside Cemetery had gone through a period of neglect before the city of Hutchinson took over its maintenance. It is now a carefully maintained cemetery of about 13,000 graves.
