Charles Burks, was born abt 1750 in Virginia and died in Washington County, Kentucky, abt 1815. He is the earliest known ancestor of the Kentucky Burks. He "applied for a license to build a water-powered gristmill in 1805 on Hardins Creek at Burks Springs near present day Loretto, Kentucky. 94
This is the present day location of Maker's Mark, which still utilizes the stone foundation of the original still house of Burks Springs Distilling Co." 92
