Johann Nempsgern and Susanna Grill
Johann Nempsgern (Nimsgern) and Susanna Grill along with their five children Maria, Annette, Peter, John and Susanna, emigrated from the Port of Nantes, France on 15 March 1853 and arrived at the Port of New York 15 April 1853. Their departure/arrival dates are from Johann's Declaration of Intent Papers, on file at the McHenry County Courthouse in Woodstock, McHenry Co., Illinois. These papers also clearly state that they were citizens of France. The name of the ship they sailed on is still unknown at this time.
They settled in McHenry Township, McHenry County, Illinois, in Township 45, Section 2, as shown on the 1862 County Plat Map. On this map John's name is shown as John "Nimskin". A land deed for aprox 40 acres shows John and Susan "Nimskin" purchasing land from Oram Walker on 7 May 1853 in the amount of six hundred and forty dollars. Their homestead was located on the south side of Miller Road where the Stade Dairy Farm is located today. On the 1872 Plat Map is the name N. P. Schaefer, this was their son-in-law who was married to their youngest daughter Susanna.
According to St John The Baptist Church records, John was buried on 1 October 1861, age 81 yrs. On the 1870 and 1880 federal census, Susanna is still living on this homestead along with her daughter Susanna and son-in-law Nicolas P Schaefer. It is not known when Susanna died, deaths were not recorded between May of 1884 and Dec of 1909 or were lost in the church fire in February 1900. She was still living at the time of her daughter Susanna's death, which was 1 April 1884.

*Church Fire in February of 1900, destroyed grave markers of early settlers' so location of Susanna’s grave site as well as other family members who died before 1900, is unfortunately unknown. It is said that when the new church was built on the same spot as the one destroyed by fire, some of the early grave sites may have been covered over by the new structure.
