Nicholas Schaefer and Gertrude Schmitt
Nicholas was the son of Johann Schaefer and Maria Catharina Pulvermacher. The family arrived at the Port of New York on 11 January 1855 ~
Nicholas married Gertrude Schmitt, daughter of Jacob Schmitt and Anna Goedert, on 16 October 1856 at St John the Baptist Catholic Church in Johnsburg, McHenry Co., Illinois. Nicholas and Gertrude were the parents of ten children, three of whom died as infants. Their farm was located in McHenry Township, Sec 15, as shown on the 1872 plat map for McHenry Township. Today this location is located on the north side of McCullom Lake Road. A long drive that runs adjacent to the railroad tracks, leads up to the farmstead which is still there today. A large victorian home sits atop the hillside. After Nicholas's death in 1897, Gertrude moved into the town of McHenry, where she resided with a daughter and son-in-law. She rented the Schaefer family farmstead to her daughter Anna and son-in-law Joseph H Justen. Gertrude passed away 16 September 1902 at the family farmstead while visiting her family there.
In September of 1894, Nicholas and Gertrude donated an acre of land for use of the German Catholic Cemetery known as St Marys Cemetery in McHenry, McHenry Co., Illinois. Two stipulations were attached to this donation. The Schaefers were to receive a cemetery lot for their own use and if the cemetery were ever vacated, the property would revert to the Schaefer's estate. Nicholas and Gertrude are at rest at St Mary's Cemetery, their grave site is marked with a tall white stone with a cross on top, and is easily found, beneath the large pine tree to the front of the cemetery.
