Jacob Schmitt and Anna Goedert

Jacob and Anna (Goedert) Schmitt along with their three children, Susanna, Anna Maria and Gertrude, immigrated to America from the Port of Havre, France on the ship Albany and arrived at the Port of New York on 2 August 1841. They along with the Nicolas Frett and Nicolas Adams families, were the first three families to settle in what is now Johnsburg, McHenry Co., Illinois. Their farm land was located near where today, stands the St John The Baptist Catholic Church and Cemetery. Two more children were born to Jacob and Anna after they settled in Johnsburg, two sons' Nicolas, and Peter.

Jacob and Anna are buried at St John the Baptist Cemetery. Jacob's grave site is marked with a McHenry County Historical plaque, signifying that he was the first of three families who settled in what became the village of Johnsburg, McHenry Co., Illlinois.

Jacob's brother Frederich Schmitt and his family also immmigrated the following year, from Germany, to settle in Johnsburg.

Jacob and Anna are my maternal 3x great-grandparents, their daughter Gertrude is my 2x great-grandmother. Information in Family Group Records is from church records, vital records, federal census, and obits. For questions or to add information, contact me at [email protected]
