Among the early pioneers of Vermilion County, Illinois were three brothers -
John, Moses, and Asa B. SNIDER. Sons of Rudolph "Doll" SNIDER [d. 1796], the
boys hailed originally from Monongalia County, [West] Virginia, but had
moved west to Ohio as young men. In 1824 [as per JONES'
"HISTORY OF VERMILION COUNTY, ILLINOIS"], John SNIDER and his young family
made the trek from Ohio and built a cabin in the densely wooded wilderness,
amidst the sloughs and ponds, in what would later be called Blount Township.
Asa, who moved to Shelby County, Indiana about this same time, joined John in
Vermilion County in 1834. Moses' year of arrival is less certain. His sons Isaac
and David obtained Vermilion County land in 1833/1835 [respectively], so Moses
may have accompanied them from Ohio. By 1840, all three brothers were reunited
as neighbors in Blount Township, farming a few miles west of Danville.
This website is devoted to Moses, Asa B. and John SNIDER. Visitors will find a wealth of
information [Bible records, wills, probate and other court documents] transcribed
from the originals - placed here for cousins yet unknown to share.
It was through the kindness and goodwill of people such as Mrs. Gloria LESAGE,
Mrs. Ruth HERRMANN, Mrs. ALICE ALBERT, and Mrs. Pat LINAMAN
that this online archive was collected. To them and to the many other contributors
to this project, a most sincere and appreciative 'thank you.'
Thanks also to the ILLIANA GENEALOGICAL & HISTORICAL SOCIETY
of Danville, Illinois, who graciously allowed two articles from their research quarterly - the ILLIANA GENEALOGIST -
to be reprinted here. Visitors may access the IGHS directly at http://www.danvillevirtual.com.
