March 2, 1913 We have had a very trying time. Olive has been very sick. After I
wrote to you last telling you about the birth of our son, symptoms showed
there was something wrong. I consulted the doctor but after following
his advice for some time she did not get better, so I had him down to make
an examination. But still she did not get well. I kept going to town and
telling him how she was, temperature, etc. He was afraid of blood poisoning
so I had him down again. Now he says it is not blood poisining but typhoid
fever. It is terrible for her in her weak state. We had Mrs. Kennedy down
nursing her and Eva Bowsfield doing the work but Eva fell and sprained
her ankle and had to go home and Mrs. K wanted to go home. So with the
doctor's consent I moved Olive home. Olive wanted to go and has not taken
any harm by it. She is not well yet although much better. I have been up
all day with her. There are some symptons I do not like so I am going to
town tomorrow to see Dr. Turner again. One good thing is baby is
very good and quiet although he has lost a little flesh. I never had such
a month in my life before and if I had to have many more, I am afraid
I would go crazy. But I know she is in God's hands and he will take care
of her and give her back to me. But oh it has been a fiery trial. Poor
girl, she will be very weak and fit for nothing all summer. I am going
to try to get somebody if I can, some girl about 10 or 12 years old to
help her, but they are so scarce.
