ASTON family:
None of the 3 children listed are actually Astons. William I believe to be William Lambert (possibly illigetimate son of Samuel), Mary Anne and Hannah are both Hall, daughters of Caroline to her first husband William Hall.  Marry Anne Hall married James Turner in Wellington 5 Mar 1862 in Wellington. Mary Anne died of cancer in 1883, leaving James with 10 children, the youngest of which was 3 years old. Samuel died in 1893, while Caroline lived until 1914, surviving to see the birth of her first gg grandchild in 1909. Caroline's maiden name was Whittaker. If you have a connection with this family or would like to know more please contact Sophie Frizzell.

BROAD family:
Charles and Sarah BROAD were married in Islington, Middlesex only two weeks before the Alma left Liverpool. Charles was born 1826 in Maidstone, Kent and Sarah (ne EVANS) 1836 in Wales. Although trained as a gardener in England, Charles worked firstly as a waggoner, servicing Wairarapa & Hutt Valley. They settled in Silverstream, Hutt Valley where 3 children were born: Charles, Thomas (after his paternal grandfather) & William. Near the end of 1861 they moved to Invercargill, where 4 further children were born: Edwin, Amelia (after her maternal
grandmother), Sarah and Alfred. Charles and Sarah are buried at St John's Cemetery, Invercargill.  If you have any connection with this family or wish to share information please contact Joanna Broad

PEERS family:
James Peers (c1825-1915) and his wife Sarah formerly Fletcher nee Wharmby (c1820-1896) were married in Heaton Norris, Cheshire in 1851. Sarah was first married to John Fletcher. John "disappeared" overseas after a poaching incident and left Sarah with their three children: Samuel Fletcher (1839-1892), Eliza Fletcher (1842-1862) and Ellen Flecther (1844-). Sarah then married James Peers in 1851 and they had two sons: John Fletcher Peers (1853-1893) and Joseph Fletcher Peers (1856-1895). Ellen died before coming to New Zealand. On the Alma both Samuel and Eliza were listed as Peers, but in fact were Fletchers. After arriving in Wellington, they lived in Karori Road and James worked as an overseer for the Mt Cook Prison chain gangs. They had a daughter, Mary Ann Fletcher Peers (1861-1946), while in Wellington. Eventually they moved to Hawkes Bay where oldest son Samuel had a farm and had married fellow Alma passenger Harriet Lomas. Daughter Eliza Fletcher married Charles Shotter in Wellington; John Peers married Margaret Logan McLennon in Napier; Joseph Peers married Mary Jane Kerr in Hastings; Mary Ann married Frederick Minton Roberts. James and Sarah Peers died in Tikokino and are buried in Waipawa. They were predeceased by all their children except for Mary Ann. If you have any connection with this family or wish to know more please contact Bruce Goodman.

READ family:
Micaiah Read (1820 - 1890) was a Wood Turner, then Policeman from St Pancras, London. His wife Louisa (nee Terry) (1823 -1912) was born in Aylesbury, Bucks. With Micaiah and Louisa were their six children:
Edward born June 23rd 1844 (married Frances Haybittle in 1873), Micaiah born April 15th 1846 (had a birthday on board, married Ellen Whale - born 1855 in 1876), Frederick born January 1st 1848 (married Alice Brown - born 1857 in 1875), Louisa born August 2nd 1850 (married Walter Armstrong - born 1848 - in 1872), Anne.E. born April 16th 1855 (birthday on board married James Lomax - born 1855 - in 1879), Alice born December 9th 1856 (married Jeremiah Williamson - born 1847 - in 1878). After Alice, who was 2 months old when she was carried onto the Alma, they had 3 more sons, James Earl (b1860), Arthur John (b 1862), and Alfred Henry (b 1864). They settled in Wellington where Micaiah was appointed as Govenor of The Wellington Gaol in 1860, and he held the post until 1885 when he retired. He also was a rechabite teetotaler and formed the "Alma temperence society" in Wellington. Micaiah and Louisa were buried, (and reinterred) in the Bolton Street Memorial Park. The first 2 sons moved to the Rangetikei and Alice moved to Melbourne but returned to Wellington. The rest of the children stayed in Wellington and are buried in the Karori cemetery. LOMAS family:
Joseph Lomas (1820-1888) and his wife Elizabeth nee Forrester (1824-1867) were weavers from Stockport, Cheshire. Their daughter Harriet was 7 when they arrived. Shortly after arrival Elizabeth gave birth to William Henry who died the same year. They had 5 more children, Mercy (1858), George (1860), William (1862), Samuel Fletcher (born and died 1865) and Elizabeth (born and died 1867). Joseph worked as a gardener at Government House. He married again in 1874 to Elizabeth McClelland nee Forteris (1834-1887) who was Matron on the Ocean Mail 1874. Harriet married in 1866 to Samuel Fletcher who was also on the Alma, but on the list as Samuel Peers. He took her to land he had bought at Wakarara in the Ruahine foothills, a journey of  3 weeks from Wellington. For many years she was the only white woman in the area. She was 17 when she married and when her first baby was due she returned to Wellington. Her mother was also pregnant at the time, Harriet's baby was born first and her mother's a month later. Unfortuantely Elizabeth died and Harriet returned to her farm 'Pendle Hill' with both babies. Her little sister died aged 4 months and is the first burial in the family cemetery.
