ARRIVAL OF THE LIBERTAS
The Wellington Independent July 9th 1856

The barque Libertas, Captain Dobson, arrived yesterday afternoon, from London, after a pleasant passage of 107 days, having left the Downs on Sunday the 23rd March. Nothing remarkable occurred during the passage. One birth took place on board, viz., Mrs Fitzroy of a daughter, on Friday the 4th June, but no deaths. The Libertas spoke the James Baines, on the 19th June,  near the island of St Paul's. She was bound for Melbourne, and had on board the English mails to the 5th April. We may therefore anticipate that they will be brought on here by the Cheetah. The Libertas has brought upwards of forty passengers, some of whom intend proceeding to Canterbury. Among the passengers for this place, we notice the name of Captain Daniell, one of the early settlers, and we congratulate him upon his return to this Province.

The following vessels are advertised in the London papers for New Zealand viz:- The ship Gipsy, 600 tons,   Captain Bolton, for Auckland and Wellington, to sail on the 5th April; the ship Lord Burleigh, 900 tons, to sail April 10th; and the Lancashire Witch, 1138 tons, for Wellington, to sale (sic) on the 16th April.
