CROWTHER:
Samuel and Eliza Crowther of Halifax, England and their infant daughter Jane, left from London on board this sailing of BIRMAN bound for Port Nicholson. A month and a half into the voyage young Jane died having been unwell since around November 19th. Mr Bruce Crowther of Te Awamutu has compiled an excellent record of the ship, the voyage and life on board. MAXTON family
Samuel MAXTON was born in 1814 to Peter and Anne (nee Hemmings). Samuel married Henrietta BURROWS and together they had four children before Henrietta died in child birth in 1848. Samuel later re-married Susannah DUNNE and they had a further seven children. Samuel ran a bakery in Greytown, in the Wairarapa and died there in 1884. One of Samuels children, Annie born 1855, married William Francis ROYDHOUSE whose family had newspapers in Gretown and Masterton. One of their children, Francis William born 1887, married Muriel Crawley and one of their issue, William John ROYDHOUSE, married Millicent ADAMS whose parents arrived on the Lancashire Witch. WATERS  Thomas
Thomas, aged 16 was a painter and tiler. Originally from Bath, England he arrived at Wellington ob board the Birman in 1842. In 1851 he married Elizabeth Habgood LUXFORD, who had arrived on the ‘Adelaide’ in March of 1840. Children included: Edward Jabez [born 1855], Fanny Maria Wheatland [born c.1858], Walter Charles Luxford [born 1859], Frank Robert [born c.1862], and Charles Henry Jasper [born 1863]. The family settled in Wellington, where Thomas died in 1864 and was buried in the Bolton Street Cemetery. Elizabeth then married Thomas GILCHRIST in Wellington in 1872. Elizabeth died in 1917 and was buried in the Bolton Street Cemetery. If you have a connection to this family or wish to know more please contact Michael Butler

                            

PENFOLD Family:
Stephen Penfold [born 1805], occupation agricultural labourer and carpenter, wife Harriett Penfold, n�e MANSELL. Children: Hannah [born 1835], Harriett [born 1837], Ellen Eleanor [born 1839], Henrietta Esther [born 1840]. An unnamed male child who died in infancy [born 1845], Edward [born 1848], and Emily [born 1851], were all born in New Zealand after their arrival. The family originally came from Godalming, Surrey, England. The family originally settled in Wellington, then in 1846, moved to New Plymouth. Stephen Penfold worked as a miller in New Plymouth until his death of consumption, aged 45 years, on 11 August 1851. He was buried in St. Mary’s Churchyard, New Plymouth. Soon afterwards, the family moved to Wanganui. Harriett subsequently married Charles ASKEW in 1858. She died in Wanganui in 1884 and is buried in the Heads Road Cemetery.
