Captain Kettlewell
Departed Gravesend 18th August 1847and arrived Galway 26th August where the Irish
Fencibles embarked.
They left port on 15th September but had to return due to adverse winds. She
finally departed 26th September 1847 reaching Auckland 23rd January 1848
The Clifton carried the 5th Detachment of Fencibles under the Command of Lieutenant Owen
Wynne Gray. Surgeon Dr Arthur Saunders Thompson
Some of the Pensioners from Tullamore brought diseases on board, one being small pox which manifested itself in a two year old boy within days of sailing. they arrived at Cape of Good Hope and put into Simons Bay from 30th November to 4th December. While at Simons Bay, medicines, medicinal comforts, fresh meats and milk for the children were obtained. Mr Overbury, the Chief Officer, developed small pox and the records quote Dr Saunders Thomson of the 58th Reg., as having extremely trying conditions under which to work. Captain Kettlewell was given a testimonial from many of the passengers for his consideration and handling of the many problens arising from so much illness. This voyage was subsequently know among the Pensioners as The Ship of Sorrow. Three men, four woman and numerous children died mainly due to small pox, dysentery, typhus fever and measles. There were only two Pensioners who were not Irish and these men presumably embarked at Gravesend. Owen Wynne Gray noted in his report "that all the Pensioners and especially the women and children were pale and emanciated, bearing all the outward signs of lack of proper nourishment". This was borne out by subsequent enquiry.
