Joseph William PAPPRILL: JOSEPH WILLIAM PAPPRILL arrived as a steerage passenger on this voyage. He was born Holborn, London 1828 and worked as a Tailor's Shop Man. He never pursued this trade in New Zealand and after arriving worked felling timber around Papanui. He and his brother Thomas (see "Northfleet" 1853) took over the Sawyers' Arms at Papanui. The Lyttelton Times reports an interesting account of assault and counterclaim, Papprill and Solomon Stephens who also arrived on the Cornwall. About 1860 Joseph took over the Rangiora Arms. He, with his brother, was in the Canterbury Rifle Volunteers in the 1860's. After 1866 he moved to the Hutt Valley and died at Taita 1901. He had married SARAH ELIZABETH MOORE aged 14, daughter of HENRY AND THERESA MOORE who arrived on the Bangalore 1851. Theresa died off the Cape of Good Hope and her pitiful decline and husband's neglect is documented in the Surgeon's Diary for that voyage now in Canterbury Museum Archives. Research on the Papprill and Moore families has been completed.
