One of the earliest vessels to bring immigrants to New Zealand was the barque Cornwall, 580 tons, commanded by Captain A Dawson, who had made previous trips to the Colony in the Amelia Thompson and Slaines Castle. Captain Dawson died at Hong Kong in 1858. The Cornwall made her first voyage to New Plymouth, arriving there on the 18th August, 1849, and among the passengers were Mr & Mrs Charles Batkin and Mr & Mrs Wells. After discharging cargo, the barque proceeded to Nelson, arriving there on the 25th August, and then went on to Dunedin, arriving at that port on the 23rd September, and landing a number of passengers. In 1852 the barque sailed from London on the 12th August, and arrived at Lyttelton on the 10th December. The following year she arrived at Wellington on the 13th August, and after landing some passengers and cargo, went on to Nelson, arriving on the 19th September 1853
