Empress1865

Empress
Ship: 1313 tons
Captain: Ellis
Surgeon Superintendent:
Sailed London February 3rd 1865 - arrived Auckland May 14th 1865

The Empress, a beautiful ship of 1313 tons, of the Houlder Brothers Line, made three successful voyages to Auckland. On her first appearance there  (1863) she sailed up Rangitoto Channel with a fresh north-east wind, on a dark night, and came to an anchor off the Queen Street wharf without a Pilot. The Empress came to Auckland again in 1865 under the same commander, making the run from the docks, which were left on February 3, in the good time of 98 days, not withstanding she was becalmed for 12 days between 15 deg. and 20 deg. south of the Equator. The vessel arrived on May 14th.

DICKEY family:
Samuel and Nancy (nee Spence) Dickey and their children Jane, Samuel, Nathaniel (Wayne's Great Grandfather), James Spence and Robert arrived on board the ship Empress. The Herald lists the family as Hickey rather than Dickey and did not list Jane who was also on board (corrected on this list). They came from the Townland of Ballybeg in the Ahoghill Parish, County Antrim, Northern Ireland and followed John and Samuel Dickey who were cousins of my Great Grandfather, Nathaniel. John and Samuel Dickey arrived in Auckland on the Annie Wilson in September 1863. Two of Samuel and Nancy's daughters, Nancy who married Alexander Knox and Rose Ann who married William John Rodgers, stayed in Northern Ireland. The eldest son of Samuel and Nancy, John, arrived in New Zealand at a later date but unfortunately was incinerated when his Raupo Whare burnt down at Browns Bay in 1908. The following is an article published in the Cyclopedia of New Zealand, 2nd Edition, 1902:

Dickey, Nathaniel: Settler and Contractor, Mount Pleasant, Paeroa. Mr Dickey is a native of Ireland, and was born in 1850. He came to New Zealand with his parents in 1864, landing at Auckland, and was on his father's farm at Waitakerei. In 1874, Mr Dickey went to the Thames, and after six years of mining decided to settle at Paeroa. He was one of the first to settle at the town, and was for many years engaged in conveying machinery to the various mines in the district. Mr Dickey took all the machinery to the Waitekauri Mine before the roads were finished, and when it was necessary to employ as many as eight horses to haul a fair load over the rough country. The batteries for the Waihi and Crown mines were also conveyed by him. Mr Dickey takes a great interest in racing and several well known horses have come from his stables, amongst them Recruit, Tetford, Libeller, Try Fluke and the stallion Brookly, etc. He has on his farm at Otumatia (Otumoetai) Brookly, Swiftsure, Lady Sterling, Boadicea, Cap-tivity, Victor and several others. Mr Dickey has several horses in training and is well known throughout the colony for his thoroughbred stock. He has always taken a great interest in the welfare of his district; he is the owner of the racecourse at Paeroa, and he gave the Paeroa Volunteers a fifle range, for which they made him an honorary life member. For nine years Mr Dickey was a member of the Ohinemuri Licensing Bench before it was merged into the Bay of Plenty District, and he has since held a seat for several years.
