Arrival of the Endymion

Four passages to New Zealand were made by the Endymion, 759 tons, Captain Richardson. Her firs appearance  was in Auckland in 1873. She left the Docks on April 8, and reached Auckland on July 18, 101 days from the Docks. Just after passing the Cape a sad accident happened. At 4 o'clock one morning an apprentice names John Richards was missing. No one ever knew exactly what happened, but it was supposed that he must have fallen overboard during his watch. The Endymion, which was built in 1869 (sic), at Glasgow, fot the tea trade, was a superior class of vessel, with excellent accomodation for her passengers.

ARTHUR(S) FAMILY [NB: From their arrival in New Zealand, the ‘s’ was dropped from the surname.]
John Arthurs, son of John Henry Arthurs, was born around 1832 at St Albans in England and on 27 September 1858, at the St Thomas Parish Church in Winchester, he married Eliza, daughter of Thomas Stuart and born around 1843 in Seaton in Devonshire. When he married, John gave his occupation as corporal in the 13th Regiment, 2nd Battalion, and both he and Eliza lived with their families in St Thomas. A son, John Harold, was born on 4 December 1869 in Farnham, and by the time John and Eliza emigrated to New Zealand, on the ‘Endymion’ in 1873, they had another son, William, and Eliza was expecting their third child. A daughter, Mary Ellen, was born on board on 4 May 1873. Like his father before him, John became a grocer and he had his own grocery and confectionery business in Auckland. The family grew steadily, with the births of Ada in 1877, Violet around 1879, Jessie around 1880 and at least one other daughter, Lily. For some as yet unknown reason, John and Eliza, and at least 2 children, moved to Melbourne, Australia, some time before 1897. On 17 March of that year, when daughter Ada married James Bentley, the Arthur family was living in the Melbourne suburb of Carlton and John was working as a Watchman. When Mary married Thomas James Anderton on 17 June 1911, the family was living at Louisa Street, Coburg, Melbourne and John’s occupation was listed as Army Pensioner.Nothing further is yet known of the Australian branch of the family, but we have collected plenty of information on John and Eliza’s New Zealand descendants. If you have a connection with this family, please contact Annie Irving
