William WENLOCK
William Wenlock , whose father -also William - was the brother of my great great grandmother Elizabeth Wenlock, sailed for New Zealand on the Leucadia, leaving London on 11 May 1870 and arriving at Port Chalmers, Dunedin on 14th August.  He came from Chorley - near Cleobury Mortimer  - in Shropshire. He travelled with a friend from the neighbouring hamlet of Billingsley, namely George Buraston. It is thought they originally went out to join the gold prospectors, but  in fact William kept to his former employment working with sheep. He became a wool sorter and then a sheep dealer in the thriving township of Oamaru. In July 1876 he married Elizabeth Ellen Worsdell, who came from Andover, Hampshire with her parents and family. They raised four sons, who in turn between them had a large number of children. In the late 1890s the wool industry declined and William fell on "hard times." He died on 3rd August 1897 at Oamaru. His wife Ellen lived on until 1940 and   descendents of William still live around Dunedin and Timaru. Submitted by Sheila Kirk, Shropshire, England.
