JACK family:
Ellen Jack was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1848.  Ellen came to NZ from South Africa on the "Maori", with her mother Ann (nee Cross) 3rd marriage to John Fanch, along with brother and sisters David, Marion and Jane Jack. Ellen married James Robertson also from Scotland and who came to NZ on the "Steinwarder" arriving Oct 1864.  Ellen and James had 2 sons, Andrew John and Daniel, a daughter Annie Frances, they lived in Thames, where James died in 1876.  Ellen remarried in 1880 at Thames to a William Mason, who was a widower with two children Ernest and Sarah. Ellen and William's children were Ada, William, Albert and Lavinia. Ellen died in Auckland from Bronchitis in 1893. LAWLER family
Patrick James Lawler and Esther Theresa Walsh both came from Co Wicklow, and were married in Dublin. Their eldest two sons, Michael Nicholas and John Joseph, were born in Ireland. Hugh Jerome, (my grandfather), was born in Wales where his father was working on a bridge construction. The next two boys, Thomas Francis and James Patrick were both born in London. Another son, Joseph, was born after their arrival in NZ, but he died young, and I have not yet found a record of him. The family arrived in New Zealand aboard the Maori in December 1864. On board ship with them was Margaret Lawler aged 28, single. I wonder if this was an unmarried sister of Patrick? The family took up a land grant in the Opaheke district. They can be found in both church and civil records of the time. They did not stay in the area however, as I have traced various members all over New Zealand: through Auckland, Wellington, Masterton and Wanganui in the North Island and Lawrence in the South Island. Patrick James Lawler died in Wanganui in 1884 and is buried there. Esther Theresa Lawler died in Melbourne, Victoria in 1891, and is buried in the Melbourne General Cemetery. I do not know where Michael Nicholas settled, although I have found reference to him in NZ, and a record of a trip that he took from South Africa to Australia. John Joseph married Margaret McRory in Lawrence in 1875. They had no children. They are both buried at Karrakatta Cemetery in Perth, Western Australia. Thomas Francis married Elizabeth Ritson in Wellington in 1879. They had at least four children, (one son was born in Melbourne), before her premature death in Wellington in 1891. Their three surviving children were raised in NZ where they remained, but Thomas died in 1922, and is buried in York in Western Australia. Hugh Jerome married twice in his life. He married Annie Southee in 1879 in Wellington. They had nine children, six of whom survived to adulthood. Annie died in 1901 in Melbourne and is buried in the Melbourne General Cemetery. In 1902 Hugh married Pollie (Mary Elizabeth) Ellis in Murtoa, Victoria. Together they had three children. Hugh died in 1913 and is buried in the Western Cemetery, Geelong. James Patrick married Minnie (Mary) Taylor in Wanganui in 1882. They lived for a while in Karangahake. James died in 1921 and is buried alongside his wife in Shortland Cemetery in Auckland.
