Mermaid1864

Mermaid
Ship: 1233 tons
Captain: Rose
Surgeon Superintendent:
Sailed London November 15th 1863 - arrived Lyttelton February 16th 1864

Built in Nova Scotia in 1853, Mermaid was originally chartered by the White Star Line to run to Australian ports as a mail packet. During this trade she had a remarkable race with Red Jacket which eventually managed to beat her by 5 days. In 1859 she was applied to the New Zealand trade, making 10 voyages. Three of these were to Auckland and the balance to Lyttelton. She never managed to make any "cracking" voyages. On this voyage in 1868, apart from having some hair-raising experiences avoiding thirty icebergs off Cape Leeuwin and weathering gales in the Southern Ocean, she brought out Blackbirds, Goldfinches, Starlings and Larks for the Acclimatisation Society.

John MILNE
John Miln (the correct spelling) was returning to NZ after a two year trip to Scotland to settle his father's estate. He originally came out in 1846. Sixteen of his fellow passengers were there because of him. His wife, nee Robertson, and their three children, the youngest of whom was born in Scotland; the Milne servant is thought to have been Mrs Miln's sister Jean Robertson; the five younger Robertsons were part of her large extended family. Thomas Thornton and his family was a friend of Miln's sister, Catherine, who at the time was a minister's wife back in Scotland, but who had originally been on one of the first four ships. She and her husband eventually returned to NZ to retire. Fifteen years after this voyage Miln married Thornton's second daughter Helen and after her death married her sister Catherine. All three of John Miln's wives were aboard the Mermaid on this voyage. If you have a connection with this family or would like to know more please contact Jay Hurles.
