Merope

Merope
Ship: 1950 tons
Captain: Sutherland
Surgeon Superintendent:
Sailed London May 1872 - arrived Lyttleton 10th August 1872

Built in 1870 for Shaw Savill & Co. Ltd, Merope was another regular traveller to New Zealand. A fine looking clipper ship of 1950 tons, she made 18 Antipodean voyages in all. The majority of these, twelve, were to Lyttelton, three to Wellington, two to Dunedin and one each to Auckland and Timaru. Merope was destined to spend all of her life sailing between London and her various New Zealand ports of arrival. During a return voyage to London in 1890 her cargo of wool, flax and tallow caught fire by spontaneous combustion. The fire took hold and soon destroyed this fine ship. No crew were lost and there were no passengers on board at the time.
