Mrs Stewart & Mrs Soutter:
Believed to have been the oldest emigrants in the British Empire, two Scotswomen who took part in the "communal" settlement scheme which resulted in the foundation of the Province of Otago, New Zealand, have just died. They were Mrs Mary Stewart aged 91, and Mrs J L Soutter, aged 93. They were the two babies of the sailing ship Philip Laing which left Greenock on November 23, 1847, carrying a party of Scottish settlers. Thanks to Robyn who transcribed this from "The Times" November 5th 1938.
