The Verona encountered a sever gale in the Bay of Biscay during which several chain plates were broken and chains had to be passed under her to secure her masts, remaining round her more or less during the voyage; this retarded her passage (New Zealand Shipping Co.)

HAUGHIE family:
James Haughie (originally Haughey) was born in Co.Tyrone, Ireland in 1830. He was the son of Joseph Haughey & Mary Begley. On the 21st May 1854 in Gorbals, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland, James married Bridget Kerr the daughter of James Kerr & Cecilia McLachlan. In Scotland they had 11 children in total, 5 of whom died as babies and the other 6 emigrated with them to New Zealand. These children were; Joseph Haughie born 1st May 1855 - died 7th October 1914 who is listed under the single men travelling on the Ship. Joseph (my Great Grandfather) married Elizabeth Argyle Griffiths in Oxford where they had 13 children. Cecilia Haughie born 27th Aug 1856 - died 15th December 1924 who is listed under the single women travelling on this ship under Celia. Cecilia married William John Murfitt in Canterbury where they also had 13 children. Mary Haughie born 13th Nov 1857 - died 1858 in Tradeston, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland. James Haughie born 25th March 1859 and listed under the single men travelling on the Ship. I have not found anything on him at all. Bridget Haughie born 23rd Aug 1860 - died 1860 in Tradeston, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Francis Haughie born 3rd Sept 1861 - died 1862 inTradeston, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland. John Haughie born 11th March 1863 - and listed under the Single Men travelling on the Ship. I have not found anything on him at all. Ann Haughie born 23 Nov 1864 - died in 1864 in Tradeston, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Annie Haughie born 21st Jan 1866 who travelling on this ship with her parents and later married William John Smith. Annie and William had 7 children here in NZ. Jeremiah Haughie born 21st June 1868 - died 22 Aug 1868 in Tradeston, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland and lastly Sarah Haughie born 8th Sept 1873 - died 17th June 1917 in Oxford. She never married.
