William Jeken Elwin was a schoolteacher, who at the age of 20 years, sailed from London on the “Wild Duck” on October 15th 1859 and arrived in Wellington New Zealand on January 28th 1860. He died at Wairoa in 1919 aged 81 years.  He worked in the office of Wellington merchant Mr Fowler, then moved to Petane where he worked on Mr Skeet’s survey. He contracted to supply the forces in the Pohue district. In 1874 he took up land at Turiroa which he farmed for many years. He married   Sarah Jane Villers at Petane, New Zealand on 15th August 1862. They had seven children, two of whom, Charles and Henry (known as Harry) traveled widely in Australia, during which time Charles met Janet Scott Robinson (nee Turnbull) a widow, in Perth, Western Australia, where they were married in August 1900, and had one daughter, Laura, born in Perth in 1901. His brother Henry married Janet’s sister Margaret Turnbull in December 1900 in Perth, where they had three children. Both families returned to New Zealand about 1905. Charles and his wife Janet moved to Melbourne, Victoria in 1953. Both passed away in 1956, and are buried in the Preston Cemetery, Melbourne, Victoria.
