Surgeon Superintendent:
Sailed London February 3rd 1862 - arrived Lyttleton May 23rd 1862
There was another ship (this ship)
bearing the name which came out to the Dominion in the 'fifties, and she
was also a fine vessel of 1032 tons. She was sent out by Willis, Gann and Co., and ran to
Lyttelton on her maiden voyage in 1858 bringing out 400 immigrants from London. Captain
Foster commanded the ship on each occasion when she came to New Zealand. The first
Zealandia made six voyages to New Zealand.

HAMPTON family: Robert Hampton, (son of Moses,) & his wife Isabella (Finlay) daughter of Samuel Finlay & his wife Elleanor (Hamilton), sailed on the Zealandia, leaving London, 5 th February 1862, arriving Lyttleton 24th May 1862. With them were their 2 children Moses age 4yrs & Margaret age 2yrs. on the 12th May 1862, their daughter Ellen Zealandia was born, (ref BT 158/2 entry No 638) report filed by the Master John Foster, in Liverpool, June 1863. The actual date of birth was 12 May 1862, this from a Ships Birth record. As a child we were shown a Certificate, or similar, which showed Ellen born at Sea, & with the middle name Zealandia, however the only other time I have seen the name was on the Ellen's Will. Ellen was my Gt Grandmother. In 1882, Ellen Hampton married John Phair, a labourer, also from the Townland of Clare in County Down. They lived in Canterbury, West Melston, Templeton areas. about 1900, the younger children show at school in Woodvile. The family moved further North to Hastings where they seem to have remained until about 1920, before moving back to Christchurch area. If you have a connection with this family or would like to know more please contact Mary Legarth. |
