Chrysolite
Ship: 1129 Tons
Captain: D McIntyre
Surgeon Superintendent: Dr. Cooksedge
Sailed London April 15th 1861 - arrived Lyttelton July 27th 1861

We perhaps do not always remember what an important part the United States played in the evolution of the clipper ship. In the early sixties the fastest ships were almost without exception built in the States, and it was only after the British builders had learned the lessons of the daring American designers, and applied what they had learned to building in iron instead of wood, that Britain again won supremacy at sea. Some of these American wooden ships were very beautiful craft, and they were almost invariably fast. Such a one was the Chrystolite, 1129 tons, which made a number of voyages to the colonies under Captain D McIntyre, a popular master. In 1861 she arrived off Lyttelton Heads when only 74 days out from London, a passage that was at that time marvellously fast.

Thomas Hillier GREEN
Thomas Hillier Green married Elizabeth Ann Amor in April, 1861 at Pitcombe, Somerset  just days before sailing to New Zealand. Thomas a butcher by trade came to New Zealand as a farm labourer. They were joined later by cousin George Oborn who arrived on the Accrington on 5th September, 1863. By then Thomas and Elizabeth had had two of their six children and George became their baptismal sponsor. In 1865 it is noted that Thomas was a leasehold farmer of a small block at about that time formed T.H.Green & Co. (bacon curers and butchers) a company that was part of the Christchurch landscape for many years. Further information on this is available from John Fisher.

DOIG family:
They were married in 1861 and soon afterwards sailed to New Zealand. Peter was born in Perthshire, Scotland on 4 August 1838, married Margaret DICK of Alloa, Firthshire. Apparently the voyage was a rough one and Margaret, who was a poor sailor, spent most of the time in her cabin and was thankful when they arrived at Lyttelton. Also travelling with the young couple were Peter's elder brother Paul and Margaret's sister and her husband Jane and John BARCLAY and their three children. After a few years in New Zealand John BARCLAY was drowned in the River Avon and Jane was offered some land in Christchurch, where the Cathedral now stands, in compensation for her loss. However, the young widow with her children, preferred to return to Scotland and later married again and made her home in Australia. Many of the descendants of Margaret and Peter DOIG still live in the Canterbury area today. If you have a connection with this family or would like to know more please contact Rae Magson.
