William H. Brady (1923)

Another old veteran has been mustered out from the thinning ranks of the "Boys in Blue"  and has gone to join the Grand Army invisible and eternal. The mortal remains of William H. Brady were consigned to their final resting place in the Ida Grove cemetery, Sunday afternoon, April 22, 1923, after the last final tribute of a soldier had been paid.  The boys of the American Legion served as his military escort.  The pall bearers were Harold Wallace, Frank Elser, Vivian Adams, Elwood Matlack, Burdette Anderson, and Warner Miller.  The firing squad was Charles Gemmill, F. Stainbrook, Harry Stainbrook, Robert Colbert, Arthur Krick, Walter Shearer, Eddie Turner and Byron Satterlee.  The color bearers were George Wellendorf, Steve Truelock, and Andrew Clark.  The quartet was composed of C. W. Sankey, Ralph Shearer,J. M. Rees and Harold Clark.  Rev W. N. Yates was the officiating clergyman.  William H. Brady was born in York County, PA., May 4, 1845 and died in Ida Grove April 19, 1923, following a stroke of apoplexy the previous Saturday. He attained the age of 77 years, 11 months, and 15 days.  At the early age of 18 years, he enlisted in Co. B Third Battalion of Pa. and served 3 years, engaging in numerous battles and receiving his discharge after being wounded in action.  He was willing to lay his life on his country's altar in time of war and of her need and became an upright, industrious citizen in time of peace.  He was married to Miss Matilda Myers, Aug. 8, 1869.  Fourteen children were born to this union, five of whom survive:  Mrs. Alice Neal and Gardner Brady of Ida Grove, Mrs. A. C. Ford and Joseph Brady of Iowa Falls, Mrs. Charles Vaught of Somerset, Ky.  Another son, John Brady, grew to manhood and preceded his father in death several years ago. The Brady's came to Ida Grove in March 1881, Mrs. Brady died Dec. 22, 1910, and since that time he has made his home with Mr. and Mrs. William Fawcett, who have ministered to his every comfort.  His daughter, Mrs. Neal, and his son Gardner were at their father's bedside during his last illness.  Joseph Brady also came, but was called home before the funeral by things of serious illness in the family.  Mrs. Gardner Brady was unable to attend the funeral, owing to quarantine restrictions.  Mr. Brady is survived by 21 grandchildren and one great grandchild.  [Source:  Ida County Pioneer Record, Ida County, Iowa]

 

Albert O. Dixon (1954)

"Service Thursday for Albert Dixon" 
Albert O. Dixon, 67 years old, of Manteno, Ill. and a former Martinsville resident died Monday of injuries he suffered in a railroad crossing accident which occurred about 5:30 Saturday evening at the main crossing in Manteno. He has been employed at the state hospital there for the past 13 years. He is survived by a daughter Mrs Doris Vaught of Gary, Ind. and a son Herbert of Colorado. Surviving also are four grandchildren and a sister, Mrs Dovie Campbell of Casey. Following a short service in Manteno, the body was taken to the home of Mr and Mrs Lewis Campbell of Casey on Tuesday afternoon. Markwell Funeral home have charge of the arrangements at Casey. Services will be conducted at 2:00 Thursday afternoon from the Casey Baptist Church with the Rev. H H Hooker officiating. Burial will be in Casey Cemetery."

Dovie Dixon-Campbell (February 1970)

"Services Held in Casey for Mrs Dovie Campbell" 
Mrs Dovie Campbell, 85, of Casey died about 9:25pm Sunday in a Waynesville, Mo. hospital. She had been visiting a niece, Mrs Doris Vaught, in Dixon, Mo. for the past two months. She was born on September 6, 1884, near Casey and was married on November 6, 1912 to Lewis Campbell. Surviving are: the husband, Lewis: and one niece, Mrs Doris Vaught of Dixon, Mo. Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 25 at 2:00pm in the Casey First Baptist Church with Rev Cecil Fuson of Centralia officiating. Burial was in the Casey Washington Street Cemetery. Greenwell Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements."

Joseph Grant Dixon (1949)

"Joseph G. Dixon"
Joseph G. Dixon, son of Joseph R and Malinda Dixon, was born June 12, 1864 in Guernsey County, Ohio and departed this life June 27, 1949 at the age of 85 years and 15 days. He was united in marriage to Rebecca Houser, December 31, 1883, who preceeded him in death in 1931. To this union was born one son, Albert O. Dixon of Manteno, Illinois and daughter, Mrs Lewis Campbell of Martinsville, Illinois. Also to mourn his passing away are two grandchildren, Herbert Dixon of Pueblo, Colorado, and Mrs Raymond Vaught of Gary, Indiana; five great grandchildren; one great great granddaughter; several nieces and nephews, and one brother, Samuel Dixon of Elwood, Indiana. He was converted at an early age, and united with the Macedonia Baptist Church. Later he moved his membership to the Baptist Church in Martinsville, Illinois."

Charles Edmond McDonnell (1933)

AGED BARBER HERE IS TAKEN BY DEATH, Charles E. McDonnell, 77, is Victim of Dropsy Thursday After Long Illness. Charles Edmond McDonnell, 77, retired barber, died at noon Thursday at his home, 501 H. street following an illness of three months from heart trouble and dropsy. Funeral services will be held Saturday with burial at Scotch Ridge, O. The body was taken to the Renshler mortuary where is will remain until final arrangements are completed. The son of Patrick and Ellen Stevens McDonnell, he was born April 20, 1856 at Delaware. He came to Hancock county 33 years ago. He was first married to Caroline Philo, who died 9 years ago. He was married in 1926 to Mrs. Mary Karn, who survives. Two sons and one daughter survive. They are Edward P. McDonnell, of Baldwinsville, N. Y.; Mrs. Jennie Chase, of Cleveland, and Floyd E. McDonnell, of Mosierville, Mich. One brother, Thomas McDonnell, lives in Bowling Green. Four step children also survive. They are Mrs. Grace Barnhouse, of Van Buren; Mrs. Laura Huffman, of Cass township; Edwin Karm and Mrs. Hasel Gallams, at home. Nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren are living also. Mr. McDonnell was a member of the First United Brethren church.

Matilda Myers-Brady (1910)

Mrs. W. H. Brady died Dec. 22, 1910 at the age of 59.  She was born Feb. 11, 1851 in York County, PA.  She was Matilda Myers, daughter of John Myers.  On Aug. 8, 1869, she married W. H. Brady.  To them were born 14 children, six of whom survive:  John, Gardner, Joe, Mrs. H. E. Neal, & Bessie of Ida Grove, along with Mrs. A. C. Ford of Iowa Falls.  Mr. & Mrs. Brady came to a farm in Ida County in the spring of 1881, and moved in from the farm in 1894.  She was a member of the Lutheran Church and her husband survives.

Caroline Philo-McDonnell (1924)

CANCER PROVES FATAL, Mrs. Caroline M. McDonnell Dies After Four Years' Illness---Born in Wood County. Mrs. Caroline H. McDonnell. 62, passed away at 3 o'clock Friday afternoon at her home, 517 H street, after suffering for four years with cancer. Mrs. McDonnell was born Jan. 16, 1862 in Wood county and was the daughter of Ashel and Elizabeth Philo. On Dec. 24, 1879, she married Charles E. McDonnell who survives as does her mother who lives in Pemberville, O. Twenty-three years ago she removed to this county. Children living are: Floyd E. of Jackson, Mich.; Mrs. Albert Chase, of Cleveland and Edward McDonnell, of Findlay. One child died in infancy. A surviving brother is Bert Philo, of Mt. Pleasant, MIch. Two sisters are Mrs. Jane Murr, of Petosky, Mich., and Mrs. Dela Haggerty, of Pemberville, O. She was a member of the U. B. church. Funeral arrangements have not been made. Maria Roller-Myers (1892)

Mrs. John Myers, living southeast of town died of pneumonia last Monday after a brief illness. Mr. and Mrs. Myers lived in Ida County the last 15/18 years and were well known. She was highly respected and loved by all that knew her. She was born October 10, 1823 and had reached the age of 68 years, 3 months and 22 days. Maria was the daughter of John and Sarah Roller of York County, Pennsylvania. She married John Myers in 1845, to this union was born 4 daughters and 2 sons. Funeral Services were October 11 at the Baptist Church. John Myers Jr. of Middletown, PA arrived yesterday, but too late to find his mother alive.
