Christmas Peace

Farmer Michael Pagels, who was chisel plowing the pasture where his cattle graze and noticed the sharp contrast between the freshly turned soil and the short grass.

"I thought to myself . . . 'Hmmmmm, this could be put to use.' I got off my tractor and studied the situation a moment. At first, I thought about making a Packers 'G' but figured the Green Bay Packers stuff has been done to death," he said.

"Then I thought about Merry Christmas and decided that would be way too complicated. And then, bingo, PEACE! Simple, only five letters, and a universal Christmas message."

An hour later, Pagels had finished the design with letters about 96 feet long and 48 feet wide. It's hard to see from the ground, but from the air above his Wisconsin Rapids-area farm, it stands out.

Pagels' "PEACE" sign may be covered with the first good snow, but his message will live on with people who will talk for weeks about the farmer who plowed for peace. It's the season in which little things count.

S. Ariz. golf tourney moving to Tucson
The John Gibson Cup matches are moving to Tucson.

The annual competition between the top professionals and amateurs in southern Arizona has been held at Rio Rico Golf & Country Club for its first four years.

The fifth annual event is set for Jan. 16-17 (1999). The opening round will be at Oro Valley Country Club, with the final day at Omni Tucson National Golf Resort & Spa.

The amateurs team pulled off an upset last year, ending the pros' three-year dominance. Larry Pagel of Randolph Men's Club returns as captain of the amateur squad.

The competition is named for the late John Gibson, Oro Valley's first head pro and a former University of Arizona men's golf coach. It is sponsored by the Tucson Citizen.
