RUGBY UNION: Pagel forgets Springboks after Northampton switch
NORTHAMPTON, England (Oct 28, 1997 - 12:10 EST) - Springbok prop forward Garry Pagel wrote off his chances of a recall to the South African national side after signing for English premier division side Northampton on Tuesday.

The Midlands club beat off a bid from Francois Pienaar's London-based Saracens to land the 6ft 1in (1.82m), 19st (120 kgs) front rower.

Pagel, 30, was one of South Africa's 1995 World Cup winning heroes but he accepts his international career is over.

"The new ruling in South Africa is that any player who comes to the United Kingdom has no chance of being selected," he said.

"I think I have had my fair share in South Africa and there are a couple of good young players coming through and it will give them opportunities."

Pagel, who won the last of his five caps against New Zealand at Ellis Park last year, was left out of the Western Province side for last weekend's Currie Cup final success against Free State.

"I was very disappointed but I guess it was political. I could see they had decided a week before I was not going to be selected so I expected it," he said.

Northampton's director of rugby, Ian McGeechan, who masterminded the British Lions' Test series success in South Africa this summer, said: "The fact that he has now committed himself to club rugby here is very important for us." (c) 1997 Copyright Nando.net
