From the office of Earl S. Keim II, Register of Wills and Clerk
of the Orphan's Court of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, the
26 day of Feb. 1997 copies of the will of James Steel was
obtained.
No. 48 of 1861 l In the name of God I James Steel of the
Will of l Tsp of Franklin, in the County of Westmoreland
James Steel l and the Stste of Pa. being of sound mind and
2345 l memory and considering the uncertainty of life
---------------- [ and the certainty of death do therefore ordain
and publish and declare this to be my last will and testament in
the following manner:
I will to my beloved wife sufficient
maintenance out of all of my estate during her lifetime. I
bequeth to my son James M. Steel the Christy Farm in Salem
township together with all other property received from me. I
bequeth to my daughter Peggy Young the McGeary farm on Turn run
together with all other property received from me.
I also
bequeth to my son Ebenezer Steel the McCutcheon farm in
Washington township with all other property received from me. I
bequeth to my son John Steel the McConnell farm in Franklin
township at the valuation of twenty-six dollars per acre-Two
thousand dollars of all valuation goes to John Steel first
together with all moveable property received from me with the
remainder of all valuation to be divided between my three
daughters Ruth Hamilton, ten hundred dollars to be paid one year
after my death. One hundred dollars to Pegg Young and the
remainder of all valuation to go to Catharine E. Steel to be paid
in yearly parts of two hundred dollars per year till paid out.
I
further bequest to my two youngest sons Hiram and William Steel
the farm I live on together with all moveable s and money, after
all debts be paid if any there be, likewise I make constitute and
appoint my son John Steel and my son-in-law Mathew Hamilton to be
Executors of this my last will and testament thereby making all
former wills made by me in writing invalid. I have hereunto
Subscribed my name this 24th day of May A.D. 1859.
