A LOG CABIN WAS HEWED FROM THE ABUNDANT FOREST THAT COVERED THE AREA. SHESHBAZZAR BENTLEY AND HIS FAMILY FOUNDED THE TOWN OF BENTLEYSVILLE.

WHAT IS NOW PIGEON CREEK MEANDERED THROUGH THE VALLEY SERVING TO CARVE LEVEL TRACTS OF LAND THAT WERE HOME TO THE IROQUIS INDIANS. AT FORT STANWIX, NEW YORK, LAND WAS PURCHASED FROM THE INDIANS AND SETTLERS FROM VIRGINIA AND MARYLAND, ALREADY SETTLED, REMAINED AND BEGAN THE LEGAL POSSESSION.

EVEN THOUGH THE LAND WAS NOW LEGALLY OWNED, THERE WERE CONTINUING INDIAN SKIRMISHES, ONE IN PARTICULAR, BROUGHT AN END TO THE HOSTILITIES. GEORGE WASHINGTON "CALLED IN ALL THE SAVAGES" AFTER COLONEL WILLIAM CRAWFORD WAS TORTURED AND BURNED AT THE STAKE AFTER HE AND FEW OF HIS MEN WERE CAPTURED IN A BATTLE WEST OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.

(excerpts and image from Miriam Dartnell's "Bentleysville")

I did a  charcoal and chalk drawing of Sheshbazzar Bentley, Esq., it was drawn from the photo image in the Book "Bentleysville" by Miriam A. Dartnell, written November 5, 1954.  New Voices Publishing Co. copyright, 1955

I personally have spent time with Miss Dartnell, who was confinded to her home. She should be commmended for her work, and I hope that this web-page will do just that.

The town was established 1816.  The book (back to 1770) is available for reading at the Bentleyville Public Library. There are two copies available, not for lending, as they are part of a collection of historical events that have taken place in and around Bentleyville. Referrence books are to be used at the Library.

Anyone wishing to submit their pedigrees to the library, they will accept them and add to the Genealogical Department now forming.  Pedigree form are available at the desk.
