Purpose

The purpose of this Society shall be to bring together those people interested in history and especially the history of the original ROSTRAVER TOWNSHIP which encompassed the area as far as JACOBS CREEK on the YOUGHIOGHENY RIVER, down (North) to the present day McKEESPORT, and up (South) along the MONONGAHELA RIVER as far as REDSTONE CREEK, and back to the beginning, and specifically the current boundaries of the TOWNSHIP. The Society's major function will be to discover, collect, and preserve material or property which will help to establish or illustrate the history of this area. The Society will disseminate the historical information and arouse interest in the past by publishing and displaying materials and by public programs.

Membership

Membership in the Society shall be open to all persons interested in the history of Rostraver Township area and the objectives of the Society and who tender the necessary dues.

Dues

Annual dues for regular active members shall be $5.00 for students, $15.00 for an individual $20.00 for a family and $25.00 for a sustaining member.

Lifetime membership is $200.00.

 

Meetings

October through March, meetings are held at the Fells United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. on the 2nd Saturday of the month.  April through September, meetings are held at the Finley House in Cedar Creek Park at 6 p.m. on the 2nd Thursday of the month.

 

Come to the meetings and sign up to become a member.  You will be happy you did.

The locations of historical markers we installed last summer are:

 

Gibsonton, (Route 906 and Gibsonton Road 1/2 mile north of I 70, formerly Val's Service Station),

►Dr. John S. Van Voorhis (Route 906 1/4 mile south of I70 in Belle Vernon's park),

Pricedale (Johnson Avenue and Ohio Street's Pleasant Green A.M.E. church),

►Joseph Hill (Route 201 1 mile north of I 70 at Tattoo U 2 parlor),

Fellsburg (Webster Road and Fells Church Road by Old Fells church),

►Monongahela Indian village (Timms Lane past Cedar Creek Park baseball field),

►Steen Saw Mill (Cedar Creek Gorge Trail and Yough River Trail in Cedar Creek Park),

Buddtown (Yough River Trail 1 mile south of West Newton bridge),

►Van Meter (Yough River Trail 3 miles south of Smithton Bridge).
