Quaker Cemetery, Perry Twp., Fayette Co.

(Providence Meeting House)

Cemetery Census Taken on May 19, 1999 by Mike Donaldson

The Society of Friends (Quakers) first used this place for a burrial ground, they did not mark these with tombstones,
which would account for the large areas that had no tombstones.  I was told that there had been at one time some stones that were actual large stones, that were etched by (probably) family members to include the names and other info.  These stones were removed, I was told, about thirty years ago, because they "were ugly"!!! by members of the "Historical society"!  Not sure which society did this, and why they left no record of the names of these people!

The plaque that is mounted on the building reads as follows :
"PROVIDENCE MEETING of the Society of Friends, sometimes called "The
Quakers", was established at this site in 1789.  Worshiped in a log structure
until 1795, when a meeting house, built of stone was erected.  The stones
used in the construction of this chapel in 1895 was recovered from the ruins
of the Old Meeting House".
Clik to see a picture of the MEETING HOUSE at this cemetery.

(Though not actually locate within the limits of the Mon Valley Site, it is within one mile of Jefferson Tpw, so has been added as the cemetery includes interments of persons from Jefferson Twp.)
