DEMOSS LINE - GENERATION ONE

JENA DAMAS, ESQ, BARON D'ANLEZI was born abt 1557 in de Montaigne, France, unkn date of death in France. It is unknown who his parents were. Baron DaMas m. Jeanne de Bar about 1584 in de Montaigne, France. She was the daughter of Francois de Bar and Renee de Montheron . Jena DaMas and Jeanne de Bar were the parents of:

1. RAUL DAMAS,, Chevalier, Baron d'Anlezi. He was b. abt 1586 in de Montaigne, France




DEMOSS LINE - SECOND GENERATION

RAUL DAMAS, CHEVALIER, BARON D'ANLEZI was born about 1586 in de Montaigne, France, the son of Jena DaMas, Esq., Baron d'Anlezi and Jeanne de Bar. Raul DaMas wed Helene Arnaud 31 May 1606 in de Montaigne, France. She was the daughter of Francois Arnaud, Seigneur, and Gariel de Ferdid. Raul DaMas and Helen Arnaud were the parents of:

1. ANTOINE DAMAS, Vicomte de Drui b. abt 1609 in de Montaigne, France.




DEMOSS LINE - THIRD GENERATION

ANTOINE DAMAS, VICOMTE DE DRUI was b. about 1609 in de Montaigne, France, d. unknown date in France. He was son of Raul DaMas and Helene Arnaud. Antoine m. Madalene Hannapier 4 Jul 1636 in de Montaigne, France. She was the daughter of Jacques Hannapier. Antoine DaMas and Madalene Hannapier were the parents of:

1. NICHOLAS FRANCOIS DAMAS 1, VICOMTE DE DRUI was b. abt 1632 in de Montaigne, France.




DEMOSS LINE - FOURTH GENERATION

NICHOLAS FRANCOIS DAMAS I, VICOMTE DE DRUI, was b. abt 1632 in de Montaigne, France. He d. unkn date, in de Montaigne. He was the son of Antoine DaMas, and Madalene Hannapier. Nicholas m. Maria Theresa Tierceline on 21 Aug 1668 in de Montaigne, France. They were the parents of:

1. COUNT LOUIS DUMAS II, b. 1669 in de Montaigne, France.

DEMOSS LINE -FIFTH GENERATION

COUNT LOUIS DEMOSS (LOIS DUMAS) was b. 1669 in de Montaigne, France, son of Nicholas francois DaMas I and Maria Theresa Tiercelin. He d. unkn date in the Netherlands. He was a Huguenot, fled from France in October 1685 and settled in Holland. It is unkn who he wed. He had sons Louis and Charles, and possibly other children. His son, Louis II came to America about 1700. The children of Count Louis DeMoss, possibly among others are:

1. LOUIS DEMOSS II b. Holland 1684

2. Charles DeMoss b. Holland




DEMOSS LINE - SIXTH GENERATION

LOUIS DEMOSS II was b. in Holland in 1684. Louis came to America with brother Charles as stowaways on a ship. Charles DeMoss was killed by indians, being unabelto escape because of injuries received before he came over. One tradition says that Charles died unmarried, another has it that he left a family of small children. Brother, Louis, (our connection) married the daughter of a Virginia planter (unkn last name) and raised a large family. Louis was father to:

2. William DeMoss m. Ann--------, Had Elizabeth baptized 1715, James in 1721

DEMOSS LINE - SEVENTH GENERATION

LOUIS DEMOSS JR. was b. about 1708, probably in Maryland. His will was dated 17 Jun 1743 in Orange Co., colony of Virginia. He wed to Catherine --------- unkn date, in Deer Creek, St.Johns Parish, Baltimore, MD. Birth and land records of Baltimore Co MD, (now Harford Co.) prove that the Louis DeMoss family first settled in Maryland before going to Virginia. The earliest DeMoss record found in America is in Harford Co. MD, the earliest date being about 1700. The first land records naming Louis (Lewis) DeMoss is in Baltimore Co. ND, 20 Sep 1717.

Louis DeMoss had left Harford Co. MD in 1735 and moved to Orange Co. VA. He and a son built a mill on Mill Creek where it emptied into the Opequon River. He is thought to be buried in the churchyard of Morgan's Chapel on Opequon Creek where he attended church. Burial place has not been proven, and there has been some controversy over this matter.

WILL OF "LOIS DEMOS" (Lewis Demoss)

Orange County
In the Colony of Virginia

"In the name of God, Amen, I Lowis Demos of Oppeckon in the said county of Orange and in the colony of Virginia, being weak in body, but of sound memory thanks to Almightly God for ye same; and calling to mind ye uncertainty of this frail and mortal life, and that it is appointed to all men once to dye, and after death come to judgment, I do make and ordain this my last will and Testament in manor and form following Viz: First and Principally I recommend my soul to Almighty God my creator who gave it to me, assuredly trusting and believing that I shall receive full pardon and free remission of all my sins to be saved by the precious death and merits of my blessed Saviour and Redeemer Jesus Christ, and my body to tge earth from whom it came to be buried in decent and Christian-like manner at the discretion of my Executioner hereinafter named. And as for such worldly goods and estate with which it has pleased God to bless me in this life: I give and bequeath the same as followeth:

(Impromis) I give and bequeath uto my son-in-law James Crabtree and his heirs of the body of my daughter Cathering now his wife his heirs and assigns forever, one hundred acres of land where he now lives part of my homestead.

Item: I give and bequeath unto my son Lewis Demos his heirs and assigns one young mare two years old, and one iron pot, one two year old heiffer and two hundred acres of land had before.

Item: I give and bequeath unto my son John Demos one hundred acres of land joyning to James Crabtree's land being also part of my homestead to him and his heirs forever.

Item: I give and bequeath unto Peter DeMos and his heirs forever one hundred acres of land, part of my homestead, joyning to John Demos land and one breeding mare and one heifer to him and his heirs.

Item: I give and bequeath unto my daughter Jane Demos, her heirs and assigns one feather bed, one cow, one breeding mare.

Item: I give and divise unto my son William Demos his heirs and assigns one young horse he having his possession given him before.

Item: I give and bequeath unto my tow sons Thomas and James Demos and their heirs one hundred and sixty acres of land my home tract to be equally divided between them after my wife's decease, or marriage, and to said son Thomas one young mare after my decease, and that my son James is to have its first colt said young mare shall bring.

Item: I give and bequeath unto my son Charles Demos three years schooling to be paid out of my movable estate, and one young mare to him and his heirs and assigns forever after my decease.

I give ad bequeath after my lawful debts and funeral charges paid all my goods and chattels, and all moveables unto my wife Cathering during her lifetime, or widowhood, and after her decease or marriage, to be divided between my three youngest sons, Thomas, James and Charles equally share and share alike.

And I do firther constitute and appoint my well beloved wife Cathering Demos, and my loving son, John Demos, to be my sole executors of this my last will and testament, revoking all other testaments and wills by me formerly made, and I do ordain this and only this to be my last will and testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal the 17th day of June in the year of our Lord God, one thousand seven hundred and forty three.

Note: "The seal of his French ring is on wax, now very fragile. In it are two little designs, reminding one of a little wheel in a watch, very pretty but not so plain" (J.W. Baker, dec'd 1954, when he copied will in 1939.)

3. William DeMoss b. 22 Sep 1716 Deer Creek, St. Johns Parish, Baltimore MD. He m. Rachel ------, had a son William.

4. John DeMoss b. 9 Aug 1718 St Johns Parish, d. abt 1790. Wed bef 1 Jan 1743 Susan Ramsey. Had John Jr.

5. Peter DeMoss b. 25 Oct 1719 Deer Creek, St Johns Parish, Baltimore MD

6. Jane DeMoss b. 25 Oct 1723 Deer Creek. She m. Peter Sagathy aft 1743.

7. Pine DeMoss b. 25 Oct 1723 Deer Creek. Not mentioned in fathers will, so must have d. bef 1743.

8. Thomas DeMoss b. 5 Sept 1726 Deer Creek, St Georges Parish. He was in Fayette Co PA in 1790 Census, unwed.

9. JAMES DEMOSS (Our connection) b. 8 Sep 1728, Deer Creek, St Georges Parish, Baltimore MD. (See next generation)

10. Charles DeMoss b. 1730, bapt. 2 Nov 1731, Deer Creek, St Georges Parish. His will proved 9 Jun 1786 in Berk- ley Co. VA. He wed 1)Fannie---- who d. before 1765. He m2) in 1765 Rebecca Throckmorton (1742-1792). He had: Catherine, Peter, Ishmael, Andrew (by 1st wife), and Susannah, Charles, William, Thomas, Louis, Throck- morton and Sarah by 2nd wife.




DEMOSS LINE - EIGHTH GENERATION

JAMES DEMOSS was b. 8 Sep 1728 in Deer Creek, St Georges Parish, Baltimore MD. He wed Phoebe Cox about 1749. They moved to Bedford Co. VA. Then they resided in Guilford Co NC in 1752. Both d. before 1774. They were the parents of:

1. PHEBE DEMOSS b. 5 Jul 1752, m. Enoch Pearson 10 Nov 1775. (This is our connection) They had ch: Martha, Samuel, Joanna, Rebecca, Mary, William and Phebe. (See Pearson line for their information.)

2. Abraham Lewis Demoss b. Oct 1753, d. 26 Sep 1820 Davidson Co TN. Buried in Old Demoss or Hardgrave Cemetery on Flat Creek near Bellevue, TN. He was in Wilkes Co, Morgan Dist. NC in first census of the US in 1790, receiving a land grant for Revolutionary War service in 1780, selling the land in 1803. He was a Captain of Militia in Salisbury Dist. of NC. He wed hannah Greer, had 9 children: Thomas, John, William, Shelton, James, Abraham Lewis, Nancy, Delilah and Sallie.

3. Tabitha Demoss b. -----, m. John Charter (Chartier) and moved to Davidson Co TN with her brothers Abraham Lewis and james about 1800. She later moved to east TN. The children of Tabitha and John were: Abiah m. William L. Demoss 1-21-1821; Maria m. Burrel V. Tarkington 2-1-1821; Parmelia m. James Killough 12-19-1821; Peggy m. Richard Compton 12-21-1810; Tabitha m. Samuel Oliphant 11-3-1825; Samuel and William.

4. James Demoss b. ca 1758, d. in Davidson Co TN in 1813, buried in Flat Creek along with his brother Abraham Lewis. James was also on the first census of the US in Wilkes Co NC. Land records in NC show he sold his land in 1800 to William Demoss. James m. Zana Taylor in Bedford Co. VA 15 Oct 1782, the marriage being performed by William johnson. (per Hinshaw) James and Zana's children were: Sally m. Silas Dillahunty (DeLa Honte) 12-30-1802; John m. Betsy Wade 8-25-1807; James Jr. m. Eliza Demoss 12-18-1813; Henry m. Rebecca Wade 10-18-1816; Nancy m. Christopher Robertson 10-6-1807. Nancy d. shortly after marriage and Robertson m. Elizabeth Joslin; Cynthia m. John Knight 11-14-1827; and Elizabeth m. Jonathan Betts 3-18-1812.

5. William L. Demoss b. 1768 d. 1836 in Carrol Co TN. He was also in Wilkes Co. NC in 1800 buying land from his brother James. William m. Pricilla Greer on 11-10-1797 in Franklin Co VA

6. Joanna Demoss m. 11-13-1783 to Benjamin Vachern in SC where she transferred her membership in the Friends Church, Bush River Dist 96, in 1776. (per Hinshaw)

7. Thomas Demos m. Ann Greer in Bedford Co. VA 2-13-1783. He moved to Stewart Co TN, where no further record has been found of him.




DEMOSS LINE - NINTH GENERATION

PHOEBE (PHEBE) DEMOSS b. 5 Jul 1752 in Guilford Co. NC. She wed 10 Nov 1774 at Bush River MM, Newberry Co SC to Enoch Pearson. She d 6 Jan 1841 at Mill Creeek, Montgomery Co OH. Her husband, Enoch was b. 14 Jan 1752 Winchester, VA and d. 23 Mar 1790 in Newberry Co SC. (See the Pearson line for their children and descendants.)
