RICHARD HULL

Note: " Descendants & Ancestor of George Hull etc" pub by Robt . E Hull"

Richard Hull, ...the earliest known member of the family. A husbandman and miller. (The survey and rental of the Somerset Chantries 1548) His will refers to his "ghostly father " Sir William Sherewell, which indicates that he was baptized and that Sir William was his godfather. The records of St. Bartholomew's Parish at Crewkerne beginning 1558.

Married #2: Alice _____, who was buried 20 Oct 1587, will dated 12 Oct 1577, probated 25 Nov 1587. Richard's will was dated 10 Feb 1558/9 probated 10 Jun 1559. In his will he refers to Thomas the elder, and Thomas the younger. Wife Alice's will, there is no mention of Reynold or Thomas the elder, which leads to conclusion these were the sons of Richard's first wife.

Joseph Hall of Somerset, Minister, age 40, with wife Agnes, age 25; children Joane, age 15, Joseph, age 13, Tristram, age 11, Elizabeth, age 7, Temperance, age 9, Grissell, age 5, Dorothy, age 3; and servants Judith French, age 20, John Wood, age 20, and Robert Dabyn, age 28, departed from Weymouth, England, for New England.
(2) 1635, 5 May: Arrived in Boston, MA leading a large company, including wife Agnes, 7 children and 3 servants. (2,3) 1635, 2 Sep: Took Freeman's oath.
(3) 1635, 5 Oct (8th mo.): He was allowed by the General Court to sit down at Wessaguscus, after called Weymouth, and 21 families with him. (2) Went to Wessaguscus, soon Weymouth, MA.
(2) An Episcopalian, and also active in civil life. "Dissension soon came, even even in his own children."
(2) 1636: Living in Hingham (the part now Hull), was Commissioner to End Small Causes. (3) Removed to Hingham. (2) 1638, Sep: Deputy to the General Court, Hingham, MA, though still serving Weymouth. (3) Deputy.
(3) 1638, 6 Sep (7th mo.): One of the committee to assist magistrates.
(2) 1639, Mar: Deputy, Hingham.
(2,3) 1639, 5 May: (2) Last preached in Weymouth. (3) "Gave his farewell sermon."
(2,3) 1639: Moved to Barnstable, MA.
(2) 1639, Dec 3: Admitted Freeman at Barnstable, MA. (3) Freeman.
(2) 1639, Dec: Deputy to the General Court, Barnstable. (3) Deputy from Plymouth Colony, 1639.
(3) Removed to Yarmouth and became pastor of the church.
(2) 1641: Was in Yarmouth, MA, where he was excommunicated for leaving Barnstable.
(2) 1643, Mar: He and his wife were received back in Barnstable Church.
(2) 1643, May: Gov. Winthrop, calling him "an excommunicated person and very contentious," shows him at York, ME before May 1643. (3) Settled in York, ME as their minister in 1643.
(1) Of York. (2) Of York, Oyster River and Isles of Shoals. (3) 1644, 5 May: He and Roger Garde measured land for Mr. Godfrey.
(2,3) 1645, Jul: He and wife Agnes witness Henry Simpson's deed, York, ME.
(2) 1646/7, 18 Mar: Witnessed Henry Simpson's will, York, ME.
(2) 1652: Apparently leaving all but his smallest child behind, he was at Launceston, co. Cornwall, called Mr. Hull, minister.
(2) 1662: Was ejected from the rectory of Buryan, co. Cornwall.
(2) Returned to his children at Oyster River (Durham, N (2) Was later at the Isles of Shoals. These islands owed him 20 pounds when he died in 1665. (NOTE: Isles of Shoals are a group if islands 10 miles S.E. of Portsmouth, NH. Maine-New Hampshire boundary now passes through them.) (2) Administration of his estate given to widow Agnes. The main item in his inventory was 10 pounds worth of books.

(1) Was a leading citizen of Barnstable, though in trouble at times because of his sympathy with the Quakers. Many descendants became Quakers.
