Thomas Nowlan b: 1777 in Pennsylvania 3. John Nowlan b: JAN 1779 in Pennsylvania Note: Margaret Troy came to this country while yet in her teens. At Philadelphia, Margaret Troy hired out to a family to work for three years to pay for her passage from the old country, after which time she was married to Franciscus Nowlan. It is asserted that her brother, a Catholic priest, officiated at the marriage. Franciscus had a large legacy or fortune left him by his parents in Dublin, Ireland. he left home ostensibly for the purpose of securing it, but never returned. It is believed that the vessel on which he took passage for Ireland was lost on the ocean and that he found a watery grave. In those early days means of communication were very much limited, and in consequence thereof, the family was never apprised of his death. When he went away, his son John was a babe in his mother's lap. He kissed his dear wife and children an affectionate goodbye, accidentally his nose commenced bleeding, a drop of which fell on the infant's face. His wife regarded that as a bad omen and entertained fears for his safe return, which fears were only too well grounded. Months and years were spent in patient waiting but he never returned.
