REF: Gen. Dict. of 1st Settlers in New England by Savage. Also per letter in my possession by William Perry Johnson, noted professional genealogist.

Per findings of William Perry Johnson:

From "Southern Quakers and Slavery" by Stephen Week 1896, pg 31.....In the morning William Edmundson, on his 1672 visit to NC and his two companions reached the house of Henry Phillips (this is Henry Phelps), situated on "Albermarle" (Perquimans) River, where the town of Hertford now stands, Phillips' and his wife had been convinced of the truth in New England, and came here to live; and not having seen a Friend (Quaker) for seven years before, hey wept for joy to see us.....

pg 35...."We may safely conclude that in 1672, when Edmundson arrived in Albemarle, ghere was only one Quaker family in the colony. This was the family of Henry Phillips (Phelps.), and Edmundson went directly to his house. Phillips came to Albemarle in 1665, and his is the only case of immigration in the earliest days of the colony that bears on its face any indications of religious persecution. The religious meeting at his house was in all probability the first ever held in Albemarle, and Edmundson, the Quaker, was the first to proclaim he gospel of peace."

From Colonial & State Records of NC Vol I, pg 226....Extracts from journal of William Edmundson 1676, second visit to North Carolina...."and in two days came well to Carolina, first to james Hall's (Hill's) house, who went from Ireland to Virginia with his family. His wife died there, and he had married the widow Phillips ( Phelps) at Carolina, and lived there...."

From Colonial Records of North Carolina (New Series) Vol II, pub 1968, pg 363, 364.....October 1685 "Whereas George Castleton hath absented himself from the county and Imbezled the estate belonging to the Orphans of James Perisho deceased. It is therefore ordered that no person or persons buy any Cattle belonging to the said Orphans or any part of the estate of the said Castleton and that Jonathan Phelps gather the Corne and measure the same and deliver the one half to Hannah Castleton and secure the other half till further order."

Note; This information shows that Hannah Hill was the widow Phelps first. Her daughter Hannah wed James Perisho. When James died, she wed Castleton, who stole from her children. her brother, Jonathan Phelps was put in charge.
