Parkison Branch of my Family Tree
John Parkison may have come to this country in the late 1700's, as he and his wife were listed as
of foreign birth by
the wife of one son in the 1870 census but not by another son and daughter in the same census.
We know that he was in Pennsylvania during the late 1700's prior to moving to Ohio, as most of his children are listed
as born there in later census'.
The earliest records we have found of John Parkinson, my oldest ancestor found so far, are in Warren County Ohio.
He and his wife Jane/Jennet were listed as
Communicants, Lebanon Presbyterian Church, Lebanon, Ohio on June 2, 1810.
He was ordained
an Elder August 11, 1815 and his son, James Parkinson, was ordained
as Elder in the same Church in 1818.
He purchased land in Warren County Ohio in 1816 but sold it in
1823 and moved to Decatur County
Indiana where he received the patent
on 74 & 58/100 acres of land,
located at the west half of the
north west quarter of Section Two,
in Township Eleven of Range Nine.
He paid a total of $ 93.23 for the
property at the rate of $1.25 per acre.
He died circa 1836 in Decatur County Indiana.
After his death, the farm was sold and the proceeds were divided between his heirs.
DNA testing has linked this line of the Parkison families to a Parkison line traced to Pennsylvania
and also to a Parkinson family originally from Ireland. We have not been able to document a link as yet, but with some luck, we hope to be able to pinpoint the common ancestor of these families.
The tests confirm that John Parkison was very likely to be Scotch-Irish (Ulster-Scot). And that he or his family came from the Ulster (north) region of Ireland to America.
His children:
Willis,
married Hariet Lawman, he was a merchant in Xenia, Greene County Ohio,
and died there in 1826.
One daughter, Harriet C.
married Benjamin C. Haines, died young
in Illinois. A second, Mary Jane, married
Thomas Perkins in Xenia, then moved west to Nebraska
Territory prior to 1860. Mary Jane appears to be a widow in the 1860 Nebraska Terr., Otoe County census.
James died 1823, in Warren County Ohio, prior to the family
coming to Indiana.
George married Lucretia Dawson, and moved to Shelby County by 1827, l
ater moved to Tippecanoe County Indiana. His sons
also went west, John to Missouri and two others,
Mahlon and William to Illinois. Mahlon later returned to live in Madison County, Indiana.
William remained in Illinois.
Jonathan married Mary Criss, moved to Noble Tp. Shelby County, Indiana prior to 1840
, Where he operated a farm. Most of
Jonathan's family remained in Shelby County
and are buried in the area.
John2 married Avis Harford and was a farmer first in Decatur County,
Indiana then in Waldron, Liberty Tp.,
Shelby County, Indiana area after 1851, and his son, John Henry,
(my grandfather) farmed in Shelby County for a while,
but in 1880 bought a farm near Tarkeo in Decatur County and moved the family there.
Moses and Mary, remained in Decatur County, Indiana just
across the
Shelby-Decatur County line in Adams Tp. just outside of St. Omer.
Mary never married. Moses operated a farm
in the area and married twice,
first to Sally Brown then to Salome Leffler.
Samuel married Sarah Ann Chambers and also remained in Decatur County
until 1849 when he went to Illinois
purchased land but sold it
after about six months and returned to Decatur County. His son, John Davis Parkison, M D,
moved first to Missouri, then to Oregon and Washington
before
returning to live in Illinois.

Kentucky. Some members of these families than migrated to Indiana.
Jackson Branch of my Family Tree
John Jackson, born abt. 1748 and died abt 1826 Mt Sterling, Bath County, Kentucky.
His son, William Evan Jackson had several children,
including my g grandfather, William B. Jackson, who came to Decatur County about 1863.
Recent DNA testing, indicates that John Jackson was a descendant of
Robert Jackson born circa 1605/1620 of Hempstead, Long Island, NY. This is based on a
Y-DNA 65/67 match between Burrell Edwin Jackson and the ancestral haplotype of Col. John Jackson.
