Carolina. After marriage it is said Arnold went to Arkansas, later returning to
S.C. Capt. in C.S.A.,Military Records, STALLINGS Batt., Co. A, 8 Batt.S.C.Res.,
his pistol on display in Citadel Museum. His son John James PARLER served under
him. He was married to Sarah Catherine THOMPSON (daughter of George THOMPSON and Margaret DANTZLER) before 1843 in South Carolina. Sarah Catherine THOMPSON was born on 16 Dec 1825 in Orangeburg Dist., S.C. She died on 16 Oct 1873 in near

8. John Quincy PARLER was born on 26 Nov 1820 in South Carolina. He died
on 26 Oct 1882 in Orangeburg, Orangeburg County, South Carolina. John Quincy was
too old to serve in the Civil War, but he served at home in the community helping
women with their farms and slaves. Obit. Quincy, of Lower St.Matthews fell dead
in his buggy from heart disease during the Democratic celebration last Thurs.
in Orangeburg. The body was taken to Maj.WHALEY's, his s-i-l. He was a successful
farmer. The little town of Parler is situated on Highway No.45, on the Atlantic
Coast Line Railroad, and is about five miles east of Elloree. The vast
surrounding acreage was originally owned by James Quincy PARLER and his wife
Barbara (WHITMORE). To this union were born a large family and in due season
a goodbye settlement was made of each child. Other settlers came to this section
and played an important part in the welfare of lower Orangeburg District. In 1886
the R.R. was given the right of way through this section, and Eugene M. PARLER
became Depot Agent. During the year 1870 Eugene built the first house in the
present town, and therefore he is said to have been the founder of the village,
which bears his name....compiled by Emmie May BOOKHART. It is said that John
Quincy intended to name his daughters. after the states of the Union; succeeded
in naming three of them in such a manner, Texas, Missouri and Virginia. He was
married to Barbara Jane WHITMORE (daughter of Joshua WHITMORE I) in 1842 in
South Carolina. Barbara Jane WHITMORE was born on 21 Jun 1823 in South Carolina.
She died on 8 Dec 1898 in South Carolina. Barbara J. PARLER made suit to grant
her Letters of Adm. for her late husband's estate. Court of Probate to be held
in Orangeburg Feb.9th signed 25 Jan.1883 by Benj.P.IZLAR, Judge of Probate.

George studied to be an M.D., was called off to war and was engaged when
he left home. Upon his return he found his sweetheart was dead, slaves
freed and his money gone. He just "lost himself" and died a pauper.

sixty feet square to be used for a burial ground for him, his family and their children, known as Joiner Cemetery. His will was found in the Monks Corner, S.C. Courthouse. He left 1,000 acres of land to be divided between his four sons, plus one third interest in the Steam Engine, Cotton Gin, Grist and Saw Mill Co. He had seven children by his first wife.

Inf. Reg. Hampton Legion, S.C. At age 18, on 19 June 1861 Ciba, S.C.
(Muster-in-Roll) he enlisted at Richmond, Va. 5 July 1861 and was appointed Sgt.
Aug.1862. His Obit referred to him as "Capt." Lewis served for several years
in the State Legislature and as Co.Supt. of Education; he was later elected
to the Constitutional Convention from Colleton Co.; when Dorchester Co. was
formed he was elected Treasurer, and held the position for four years. He had
a Dry Goods, Groceries, Hats, Shoes and Hardware Store @ George's Station,
S.C. after the Civil War. Photo copies of all in files of Carrie PARLER-GIBSON,
Obit. "Capt." L.E. PARLER died in Columbia, S.C. and buried in St.George, under
the Masonic Order, assisted by the Knights of Pythias, a loyal member of these
organizations. He was married to Charlotte Rabecker (Scharlott) GODFREY
(daughter of Benjamin GODFREY and Rachel (HART) HURST) about 1867 in South
Carolina. Charlotte Rabecker (Scharlott)GODFREY was born on 9 Dec 1847 in South
Carolina. She died on 13 Oct 1916 in South Carolina. Both are buried in U.D.C.

24. Capt. John James PARLER was born on 10 May 1848 in South Carolina. He died
on 5 Apr 1927 in Harleyville, Dorchester Co., S.C. He was buried in Harleyville
Cemetery, Harleyville, S.C. Follower of Hampton in the Confederate Army, and as a
'Red Shirt' in the days of `76 died at his home in Harleyville. Funeral services
were held in the Methodist Church, conducted by Rev.E.B.JOHNSTON, his Pastor,
assisted by Rev.P. K.HOWELL, Rev. W.E. SANDERS and Rev. J.M.SHINGLER. The church was filled to overflowing with relatives and friends. Obit from newspaper.

family Bible, photo copy in my files. Book "I", p.305, recorded Mar.28,1882; his
father, Arnold E. PARLER, of Colleton Co. sold to John 50 acres of land for $100.
He was married to Florella Marthena "Rel" HOWELL (daughter of Joseph Hardy
HOWELL and Louisa CARN) on 10 Dec 1866 in South Carolina. Florella Marthena
"Rel" HOWELL was born on 5 Dec 1841 in near Bowman, South Carolina. She died on
24 Aug 1922 in Harleyville, Dorchester Co., S.C. She was buried in Harleyville
Cemetery,Harleyville, S.C. In the three pages mentioned in the HOWELL Family
History he has the name as Morrello Marcens. Florella joined the Methodist Church
early in life, first at Ebenezer Church. After marriage they lived in Harleyville
for many years. W.E.SANDERS was Pastor.

28. Mary A/R PARLER was born on 7 Mar 1854 in South Carolina. She died on 3 Sep
1904 in Sumter County, South Carolina. Mary met her future husband while boarding
with and attending a school in Elloree, operated by his older sister, Elizabeth
E."Lizzie" SNIDER, w/o Rev. W.J.SNIDER, founder of the town. Mary attended
boarding school in Elloree and Limestone Springs Female H.S. She graduated in
1875 from the School of English Language and Litature of the Greenville Baptist
Female College and once was the May Queen. Mary died of Typhoid Fever. I was
sent a beautiful photo of Mary taken between 1875-1885, which was contributed
by Robin BRABHAM, as well as family history. She was married to Whitfield George
WELLS (son of Henry Haynsworth WELLS and Ann Elizabeth MICHAU) on 26 Nov 1876 in South Carolina. Whitfield George WELLS was born on 19 Apr 1852 in Sumter County, South Carolina. He died on 4 Nov 1912 in Sumter Co., South Carolina. Whitfield
attended Furman University from 1872-75; member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity.
According to his daughter, Inez, he left without taking his degree to help his father on their farm at Mt.Hope. There was no issue by his second marriage.
Information contributed by Robin BRABHAM April 1994, as well as photos, one being
of the Mt.Hope Plantation near Sumter, S.C. His marriage to Mary PARLER was
performed by his b-i-l, Rev. D.W.CUTTINO. Whitfield was variously deacon, treasurer,
and clerk at Bethel Baptist Church. From 1896 until his death in 1912, he was
clerk of the Charleston Baptist Assoc. At the association's 162nd annual session,
held at Bethel in Oct.1913, the assoc. approved the following report: "Bro. W.G.
WELLS was called to his reward Nov.4,1912. He was devoted to his church,
"Bethel" and in the community his light was seen and recognized by all who knew
him. For 16 years he served as Clerk in the Charleston Assoc. and his faithful
services rendered in this capacity have been engraved on our hearts and we are
confident that these good works will follow him." "On motion it was resolved
that photography of W.G.WELLS be requested from his family, that a page in our
Minutes be set aside to his memory and his picture placed thereon." In the
published minutes his photography appears as the frontispiece.

She died on 26 Oct 1965 in South Carolina. Amarintha never married; she
taught music and was organist at Connie Maxwell Orphanage in Greenwood
for 30-35 years. She was the first to join the D.A.R. on the basis of Richard
WELLS' service and was Regent of Sumter's Home Chapter 1953-54.

32. Lauretta Virginia PARLER was born on 2 Sep 1845 in South Carolina. She died
on 6 Jul 1929 in South Carolina. She was buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Columbia, S.C.
As a widow Virginia brought with her, to her second husband, Thomas, some four daughters and a sizeable plantation well stocked, located near Parler, S.C. This plantation
was later sold and the monies used for investment in Columbia, S.C. In the early
1900s Virginia drove a rubber tired buggy over the streets of Columbia, S.C.,
where she lived. The home she occupied was at 1610 Senate Street, and still stands
with much the same front on it. She was a kind lady with forceful opinions, and
died of an acute heart attack at her home. She was married 1st Andrew Jack
HYDRICK about 1861 in South Carolina. Andrew Jack HYDRICK was born on 24 Mar 1824 in South Carolina. He died on 6 May 1871 in South Carolina. Jack was a middle aged
well-to-do farmer from the Parler section of S.C. when he married Virginia,
who was a quite young and spry little miss of 5'4" height.

She married 2nd Thomas Baynard WHALEY I Maj. (son of Edward Charles WHALEY
and Abigail Mikell BAYNARD) on 25 Oct 1877 in South Carolina. Thomas Baynard
WHALEY I Maj. was born on 8 May 1823 in South Carolina. He died on 8 Jul 1890 in
South Carolina. He was buried in Old Episcopal Church Cemetery, Orangeburg, S.C.
Thomas was one of the survivors of the ship wreck, Steam Boat Pulaski, which was
lost by the explosion of her boilers on the night of the 14th June 1838 off the
coast of N.C., 45 miles South of Cape Look Out. He studied law at Princeton and
lived all his life in Orangeburg, S.C. where he is buried not far from the
Southern R.R. freight depot. Lauretta Virginia PARLER and Thomas Baynard
WHALEY I Maj. had the following children:

33. Texas Melisa PARLER was born on 8 May 1847 in Parler, Orangeburg Co., S.C.
She was born on 23 Jul 1854 in South Carolina. She died on 24 Feb 1917 in South
Carolina. She was buried in Antioch Cemetery near Elloree,South Carolina. Texas
was given a plantation a few miles distant of the Town of Parler by her parents.
Not listed in 1850 Census. They had eight children. She was married to Lemacus
Noel "Mack" SHINGLER (son of George J. SHINGLER and Martha Ann PARLER) on 10 May 1879 in Orangeburg Co., South Carolina. Lemacus Noel "Mack" SHINGLER was born on 23 Dec 1855 in South Carolina. He died on 13 Jan 1923 in South Carolina.
34. Mary E. PARLER was born about 1848 in Parler, Orangeburg Co., S.C. Mary was
given a large tract of land in and around the present site of the Town of Parler
by her parents adjoining that of her brother, Eugene. She married Roland Quincy
MOORER. Roland Quincy MOORER was born in South Carolina. When the new highway
No.15, joining Orangeburg Co. with Claredon was being built, all material which
was brought in by the railroad for this purpose was unloaded at its ending a few
miles east of Parler, thus the top became known as Parler Cross Road. Roland Sr.,
a far sighted business man erected at once a store and dwelling combination on
the east side of Highway 45 and sold it to J.R. WATKINS, who began to operate
under the name of Francis Marion Service Station. A good stock of general
merchandise was bought and also the Standard Oil Products were added. This was
the beginning of one of the prettiest and most up-to-date little shopping centers

35. Eugene Moore PARLER was born on 22 Nov 1848 in Parler, Orangeburg Co., S.C.
He died on 14 Sep 1920 in Parler, Orangeburg Co., S.C. In 1870 Eugene M. PARLER
built the first house in the Town of Parler, on land given to him by his parents,
thus he became known as the founder and the town was named after him. Eugene went
to Mississippi for two years, when he came back he bought land from Jim FELDER's
estate and Mrs. McCAY. The EVANS opposed his marriage to their daughter as they
were very pious and Eugene was wild, and yet he was smart and would make a good
living. He gave his wife trouble the first few years. He was a successful farmer,
merchant and banker, director in the First National Bank of Elloree and the
Farmers Bank of Parler. He was a lifelong member of Antioch Baptist Church where
his funeral was held. He died after an illness of six weeks. He was married to
Mary Mildred "Nellie" EVANS (daughter of John Griffith EVANS and Julia Magdolin
HUTTO) on 24 Dec 1874 in South Carolina. Mary Mildred "Nellie" EVANS was born
on 25 Feb 1856 in South Carolina. She died on 27 Aug 1952 in South Carolina.

Franklin SHULER and Elizabeth Louise HART) in South Carolina.

South Carolina. He died on 26 May 1914 in South Carolina. He was buried in

Mary Ann WELLS) on 25 Mar 1886 in Sumter C., S.C. Susan Parniece CUTTINO was
born on 10 Jun 1861 in Sumter County, South Carolina. She died on 17 May 1951
in Elloree,Sumter County, South Carolina. She was buried in Santee Cemetery,
NW of Elloree, South Carolina. She died at home and taught at the Elloree H.S.
At the time of her death she was Elloree's oldest citizen.

He died on 11 Nov 1934 in South Carolina.
